Bigger question, why do women like this so much when it’s so rapey
My gf loves it as this great romance even though women get raped a fair amount
The main woman is sexually assaulted, later raped, later her daughter gets raped, later she witnesses a rape right in front of her, later she gets kidnapped and is gangraped all night. The husband is raped at one point. I’m sure there are more I’m forgetting.
    Shit is fricked

      Anonymous

i don't think they like the rape, but as most women have suffered SA they see it as realistic, and they can emphasize with the characters

        Anonymous

I guess, but the rape really feels like plot device rather than delving into the realities of sexual assault
To me, I’d be insulted by the show’s casual use of rape as drama if I was a rape victim

          Anonymous

Fictional rape scenario allowed the heroines to enjoy sexual pleasure while still maintaining their moral purity. Nice girls don’t seek sexual pleasure. But if the sexual pleasure was forced on them…
add to that the near universal domination fantasies regardless of upbringing well-

what's really wild is there were period where most common popular protagonist were hero rapists themselves (taming the wildman)

Now I haven't watched the show but is it possible that they like it because the rape makes the evil characters look pretty definitively evil and people to root against, and then the male lead is a warm and kind and heroic man and they fall in love with this guy and want to see him love the female protagonist and bring her happiness and so on and kill the evil rapers?

The one recurring villain rapes them both at one point or another, that was definitely the case with him. He was almost cartoonishly evil.
But he dies halfway through and the other rapists aren’t recurring and they frequently get no justice. The fricking king of France does her at one point. A your virgin is raped in front of her by a masked gang and they’re never seen again.
Her brutal gangrape is brutally avenged, I guess, but there was conflict brewing there anyway and they could have done the story without the rape
The daughters rape in particular ends up being a plot device for a bunch of shit
It really just feels like the writers throw a rape in whenever they need drama

I watched it for the first few seasons. It's extremely comfy. You root for the romance and the setting is compelling. Women love imagining having multiple love interests. The Jamie character is extremely likeable and clearly designed to be every woman's dream (men want to be him yada yada)
I learned about Scottish history by watching it. I even visited Scotland and some museums.

After a while it gets a bit samey and I lost interest. It's ultimately a show for older people and women

She speaks out of turn with her 1950s~ sensibilities in an era where talking out of line gets you beaten, especially when dealing with mega rapey arrogant murder'n'rape brits as they subjugate the scots. Oh and everything points to her being some run away brit-witch because she simply knows to much and speaks above her station all the time.

There's also some time-cuckholdry, but her relationship with he husband basically seems over since they haven't seen much of each other during WW2.

      Typical of all these stories.

      >oh but being submissive, keeping her mouth shut and taking care of the household? eww that's boring, i'll just make her a radfem girlboss and every man will just accept her because she's awesome!
It's even more hilarious when they're written by some basic b***h white girl and she travels to a time where racism was the norm and very obvious but she just kinda never brings it up, or does one token action where she protects some poor black woman and then moves on with the story.

Because when it comes down to it, media for women is considered lesser than media for men — even by critics who are ostensibly progressive.

Take something like the Barbie movie, which is heavily rumored to be a feminist commentary on the patriarchy once Barbie gets to the Real World. That’s “transgressive” (of male standards for a female IP) and “speaking truth to power” (to men). In other words, the movie’s spirit ultimately places men at the center of the universe. It has to cast a fictional Barbie dimension as a place where women are centered, and even then it cannot exist on its own — it must form a contrast to “the real world.”

Outlander is ostensibly about a time-lost woman living in a backwards, overtly abuse male-dominated world… but its spirit is pure female wish fulfillment. But we call that “cheesy” and “mommy porn” because it’s not “serious” about the issues it approaches (meaning it doesn’t center MEN at the heart of its moral universe).

It’s a bit like how shows that are popular among black people don’t get a lot of critical attention, but inserting black peoples into shows popular with white people (period costume dramas) invites rave reviews for being progressive. But it’s mainly “progressive” because it continues to center white people at the core of the universe.

you mean like a schlubby nerd getting laid with a 10/10 pornstar is a male wish fulfillment and isn't a serious movie? damn what a surprise

It's for sexually-frustrated older women with rape fantasies. So yeah, your mother.

My mom watches it, I assume moms watch it and since you probably don't speak with a lot of moms about what they watch and even if you did, I'm sure you weren't listening.

I didn't hate the first season but I felt full on the vibe it was going for. How is the new season in
colonial America? does it feel fresh or is it on a shoestring budget at this point for production

It's the same premise as Salem. I fell for it and watched it but it's so slow and it gets obvious that it's a show for women when you see every male actor. Even the old dude is a fricking 10/10.

I think most male viewers stop watching when the male love interest gets raped and mindbroken by the other male love interest, that must be to women like guys watching girl on girl action.

for what I saw up until then I thought it was pretty cool but the b***h was fricking annoying and unintelligent, she could have used persuasion and communication and her knowledge to convince people to help her but instead she just reacted like a dumb c**t and mostly got her own ass in trouble
