Not true. Businessmen did what they do best: stay out of the limelight and promote the "it" thing.

Right now, diversity and virtue signaling are it. For about a decade, Hollywood had it easier than they ever had, and milked it for all its worth. Pander to that audience and you'll get more hits than misses... they'll show up just because. And the films that fail? Awesome... accountants will take care of that and they make money off of insurance.

Don't like the film? "Frick you, biggot." It was impossible to criticize in a legitimate forum. Honestly, it was brilliant. They commercialized BLM, #metoo, LBGTQ, ACAB, and then these morons lined up to give them money and defend them, not realizing it was a grift and they were sitting down to hours of essentially commercials for new sequel movies and products. They still don't realize it, because they're too busy applauding each other for being so forward thinking, accepting, and fighting "nazis.'

The guys calling these shots know to stay out of focus, and will move to whatever sells best next. The wind is changing. We'll see in the next few years.

The only actual success from the ST was Force Awakens and that only had to do with box office (there were loads of unsold TFA merchandise by the time Solo was out)

Last Jedi had a much lower budget than TFA and made a profit but it underperformed compared to TFA and damaged the franchise, affecting Solo and Rise of Skywalker

Rise of Skywalker had a bloated budget and maybe broke even at best, which is why they haven't released a Star Wars movie since

Combination of that ESG/Blackrock money tasting SO good, and also Kathleen tanking the brand so hard that nobody else actually wants her job like said.

Think about it logically. Would YOU want to be in charge of Star Wars, AS IT IS RIGHT NOW, surrounded by the kind of people weeded out into Kathleen's yes-men?

But this movie going to straight up kill Star Wars. It will be official Star Wars, not a spin off or TV show, movie that will bomb. At that point, Iger going use it as excuse to fire everyone at Lucas film? I can see Zaslav doing this. Writing bomb
off with tax fraud tactics and than firing everyone and probably finding tax write off on that

            Anonymous

Well on the other hand I wouldn't count out the idea that Zaslav and Iger went to the same conference at one point and swapped notes trying to figure out how the hell they can save their tanking franchises. And coming away with the worst ideas from both sides.

But on the other hand, depending on how much control/backing the investors provide and how much revenue comes in from branded merch, parks etc alone without regard for ticket sales maybe Iger thinks (rightly or not) that at this point the movies are just IP farms and glorified publicity stunts, and their fandom has enough trained seals that will at least let it break even anyway

          People really misunderstand ESG

Fink isn't giving them money. He's getting his frickhuge hedge fund to not hold stock/bonds from nonconforming companies, which hurts share price & makes borrowing more expensive. But not by a huge amount, if Blackrock isn't buying then someone else will.

I was under the impression they actually offer under the table kickbacks to people who follow the party line, but fair enough. Stands to reason they'd get at the Mouse's purse strings by doing some under the table not-quite-blackmail shit that just happens to affect how profitable the company actually is.

If it was the first one made today, it would flop simply because most people are starting to recognize that diversity = trash so that trailer of the Black person popping up would be all anyone needed to know how bad it was gonna be. That's why I never bothered watching it.

      I’m looking forward to it.
It’s going to have to be self contained but with potential sequel bait, since even the most delusional disney execs have to be aware that green lighting a trilogy that fumbles at the starting block could cost then literal billions. This means that they not only have to invent a new enemy that is somehow a threat to Rey, they also have to have her conclusively defeat it while also leaving behind something else they could work with should a miracle happen and it makes its budget back.
This on top of grappling with the fact that they can’t depower her, since that would mean the evil chuds calling a Mary Sue win, they can’t make her overpowered, since even normalgays are aware she’s a Sue, and they have to come up with something that’s more of a threat than fricking Palpatine.

It’s going to be an utterly glorious clusterfrick

You might point to the post Walt years, but the key difference is that there were still talented people working at the company, which ultimately lead to the renaissance. The 2000s slump was ultimately fixed in part by leveraging existing talent to pivot back to movies people wanted to see, but largely by wielding their buying power and causing the cape explosion.
The situation is entirely different now. Their war chest is depleted, they don’t have the talent to make movies people want to see even if their DEI commissars would allow them to be made, and big daddy Larry is getting squeezed by interest rates and isn’t there to offset every loss anymore.
I doubt they’re going to completely explode instantly, but this has the hallmarks of a death spiral unless they have a mass execution of the staff preventing them from making a comeback.

          >I doubt they’re going to completely explode instantly, but this has the hallmarks of a death spiral unless they have a mass execution of the staff preventing them from making a comeback.
Yeah it's not good. Part of the thing with entertainment companies like Disney is that they need constant new entertainment.
Nobody is buying Cinderella dolls, for example. They were buying Frozen for awhile but that's tapered off.
They need new content to fuel merchandise and parks.
And that's been a total failure. SW was a failure (no movies since 2019!) and now Marvel is a failure.
Indiana Jones / Willow / LucasFilm a failure.
Animation (Wish, Lightyear, Strange World) TOTAL FAILURE.
This is hitting them all at once with NO bright spots. They also have Hulu coming up and no good options going forward for content.
          Doesn't look good.

        >People have been saying this for almost a decade now, and yet it's still around.
A decade ago, Disney was still riding the wave of the MCU. Covid didn't exist so movie theaters were doing fine. Disney parks were still going strong. People were invested in Disney programming. None of these things are true now.

      >How is this getting a green light?
Institutional inertia. You can't expect a moloch like Disney to perform a 180° turn all of a sudden. The kind of leadership who created this mess in the first place consists of the kind of people who are particularily ill suited to get out of it. Plus the company is suffering from rot on every level. Even if you could replace the entire Iger regime right this instant, there are droves of rank-and-file employees who take DEI as their gospel and think that the company's only mistake has been to not push it hard enough. It took years - probably decades - to reach this point. What makes you think the people at Disney have the ability or even willingness to reevaluate all their planned projects and can the most obvious stinkers?

An intentional leak. They are reading you regards right now, specifically wanting to know how male and how white this goyslop will need to be for it to make any money. And they are absolutely trying to figure out how much weight to give a shit post (they've gotten pretty good at telling the different sorts of posters apart) right now, it's hilarious. Anyhow, this won't come to much. KK's loyalists will keep up the fight, they will scuttle out from under the cabinets every time the lights aren't on them. Ma-Rey Sue and Admiral Gender-Studies will still be baseline, and general misandry will continue.

The last Star Wars thing I was mildly interested in was Ahsoka and it was also pretty bad. Nothing else they have announced looks like even giving a slight chance. Turns out the only decent Star Wars Disney has made in the decade they owned it were Andor and the first Fallen Order game. I'd say Mando too but they already ruined it to the point where the whole thing is bad now.

      Anonymous

Everyone is saying Andor was, allegedly, good but it's a classic case of too little too late

        Anonymous

Mando S1 was too little too late. Andor was the people who like Star Wars too much not to check it out years later saying that more good Star Wars existed but no one cared and hated Star Wars too much by that point. I don't blame casual Star Wars fans for being done but I'm always hoping maybe something will be good. Not paying a dime for it anyway.

I haven't seen Andor myself. I am genuinely baffled by who the frick working there thought ANDOR of all characters was the next big draw

            Anonymous

I thought the same thing when it was announced but watched it out of curiosity. Andor is there but it's more about what gets the rebellion organized and what the empire actually did that was bad other than blowing up a planet. Real sets too and well acted with an actual heist sequence with built up tension and the Rebels really are shown as terrorists. If you do watch it just don't pay for it but it's a pretty good show.

Andor has one implied lesbian couple but everything else about it has nothing to do with the ST and would fit a gritty Lucas era Star Wars show like Underworld like he wanted to make. I think it's worth checking out even if you loathe Disney Star Wars. Tony Gilroy even admitted Disney forgot he was making it until it was done.

Here is Disney's method of filmmaking over the last 3 years:
    > Studio head/executive producer comes up with a creatively bankrupt idea.
    > Hire a talentless, résumé-less BIPOC to write the film.
    > Hire a talentless, résumé-less BIPOC to direct the film.
    > Go $100 million over budget for reshoots when the first draft fails test screenings.
    > Act surprised when the film is void of any entertainment value and bombs at the box office.

Even with all of the misandrist shit in the D&D movie, if they went back in time and assassinated the writers before they made that "we love emasculating men!" statement, that movie would have doubled in revenue.

Can someone who understands ESG and Blackrock do a little breakdown of how they affect production costs? Right now it feels like producers have two options, either take the ESG shaft and follow their ridiculous guidelines at the cost of the story or do their own thing and deal with inflated costs because Blackrock has its fingers in every step of the production chain and anything non compliant gets shafted with extra costs. Say you were making The Marvels without ESG guidelines, how much would it cost?

the majority of the actual diehards are gone and children don't give a frick about it, both are reflected in almost non existent toy sales.

Star Wars is a dead franchise and we know how the marketing for this is going to go.
they'll leak a few things, pretty sure Hayden makes an appearance, good for getting the payday but we all know it's a cheap nostalgia grab. the black chick will most likely be Lando's daughter. probably more CGI Leia. Disney will probably do some kind a of lame force ghost scene with Qui Gon, Obi Won, Yoda, Anakin and Luke. a torch passing to the force is female shit.

that might be enough to draw in the normies but the rest of the movie will be awful full of the standard Disney schlock. decent opening weekend but sharp week 2 fall off and a full on flop.

everything Disney touches withers and dies

If recent past is prologue, even the normies know better now. Captain Marvel was quite a bait and switch just so Marvel can introduce Poochie. And after Lucasfilm fumbled the sequel trilogy, nobody is going to show up for more Rey since they now know what to expect from a Disney property

Stfu dude. We should commend them for how strong and brave they are for making another film about powerful women! We need more powerful female voices in film, especially Disney films! Hopefully they quadruple down on this until Disney goes totally bankrupt.

It could be okay if they gave her the dignity of relinquishing her stolen legacy and owning up to who she really is. But they're probably gonna double down on it instead.

I actually think this is an interesting movie, for all the wrong reasons obviously

Are they finally going to give her actual characterization?

They should've made a new trilogy but make it about a group of bounty hunters and criminals in the crime underworld of some planet far away from where the star wars films take place
