I think it's deeper than that. Youtube is, in theory, user created content on a social media website. In reality it's the new form of celebrity. A popular youtube channel now has a vastly bigger audience than even a successful broadcast TV show in the 90s.
In the new paradigm the border between celebrity and fan is less distinct or even non-existent. Youtubers come to Cinemaphile to shill their channels (against the rules) which flips the relationship for now anonymous is the content and they are the consumer.
The reason the "old way" is stagnanting while the "new way" is thriving is because the adherents to the old way are trying to hold on to a relationship with the audience that has since evolved.
