I know you're joking but... kinda? Look no further than the Frowning Friends episode and how it effortlessly dismantles the entire ideology of Rick and Morty in a mere 11 minutes while also managing to be hilarious. It's what happens when a show for actually intelligent people decides to take on a show for midwits who think they're intelligent. Six seasons, all invalidated instantly with a single episode half the length of ONE Rick and Morty episode.

I don't see it happening. Smiling Friends is too niche because of how unconventional its comedy can get. It doesn't follow a half-hour scripted sitcom formula like Rick and Morty and therefore won't resonate with anyone other than millennials who specifically grew up on Newgrounds and zoomers since that generation embraces surreal humor. Also animators might warm up to it.

You guys are downplaying how Rick and Morty came out at the perfect time to brand itself as an R-rated Adventure Time/Gravity Falls what with the colorful world of zany characters and super dark lore right off the bat in the first season. Meeseeks and Destroy, Rick Potion #9, and Close Encounters of the Rickind are arguably the most important episodes in the show's history with how each of them established its tone and what people expected from it. It also helps that it was at a time where multiverse shenanigans was at an all-time guaranteed hype train.
Yep, timing was key to Rick and Morty's success I won't deny that. But you also have to acknowledge how different Smiling Friends's formatting is. 11 minutes of non-sequitur gags (most of them visual gags) is different from Rick and Morty's dialogue-heavy humor and easy comparison to something like Futurama.
For better or worse, there is nothing you can compare Smiling Friends to.

Yeah, but it was still ridiculous fast paced, and over the top. The same episode had Alan arguing with a stocker, and the whole thing was initiated by his landlord who wanted to hang out and smoke weed. it was just as absurd as any other episode. Honestly, it felt more like a parody of an action cartoon than an action cartoon.

I think the biggest thing that caused the R&M fanbase to go downhill was how it couldn't commit to whether it would be wacky episodic adventures or serialized lore and character exploration.
Anyone who wanted it to be all comedy would be turned off whenever it got too serious.
Anyone who wanted it to actually have a story would feel blueballed and annoyed when the show mocked them.
All that was left was people who either had no preference either way, or lacked the pattern recognition to see that they weren't going to get what they wanted.
Smiling Friends never pretends to be anything other than Zach Hadel and Michael Cusack's combined autism splattered all over the screen.
So while there are bad fans, like all fanbases, Smiling Friends doesn't do everything in its power to weed out good fans.

The writers are such dickheads for that. They were the ones setting up all these sequel hooks and recurrent characters but then they made fun of the fans who were interested.
After a while Rick and Morty just stopped being reliably fun to watch. I don't think that'll happen with Smiling Friends since both creators seem to be on the same page and share the same goal of just wanting to make a silly cartoon that makes people laugh.
I think the split will be even messier given that Cusack does not share midwestern midwit views.
I genuinely miss when this show tried to have connections to gravity falls. The creators are friends with each other, so it’s sad to see it fall to the way side a little.

Everyone gives shit to the CalArts style, but it was such a breathe of fresh air to see cartoons actually having interesting characters and plots. I will defend season 1 and especially season 2 of Rick and Morty. It all went downhill fast after season 3. I really played up how much the second season of a show determines its trajectory and overall longevity, but it's actually with Season THREE that we'll get a better idea of what Smiling Friends will be like moving forward. S2's been interesting because last night's Allan episode was clearly done in response to fans feeling the character was sidelined too hard in the first season, so I'm very interested to see how Zach & Michael continue to build things from there while remaining true to what made people fall in love with this show in the first place.

The reason Rick and Morty is held in such low regard nowadays is because the show took a nosedive in quality in season 3 and never truly recovered from that, the crew buried themselves deep in their own buttholes and think their shit smells great. The fanbase just happened to become cancerous are the same time the show dropped in quality.
I really don't see Smiling Friends having the same drop off in quality like Rick and Morty, the SF crew know it's just a silly cartoon meant to make people laugh. Fanbases are always going to be garbage, try watching these shows and forming your own opinions for once.

I can't imagine it doing that. Seems rather cynical to try predicting that anyhow. Smiling Friends is the first TV cartoon in years that I actually like.
Smiling Friends really can't jump the shark the way a normal series can because having one extremely off episode would just be considered part of the joke.
Like people were disappointed that about half of the Pickle Rick episode was dedicated to a therapy session where a writer's self-insert chided Rick.
But Smiling Friends had an episode where the group just argues in a Brazilian airport for 11 minutes with almost no jokes, and most people thought it was funny just for the absurdity.
Smiling Friends would need to put out stinkers so consistently that they've become the norm. Even if the show goes downhill, there will never be a moment you can point to and say that it was the beginning of the end.
I don't know, I think that after having seen three episodes of season 2 the correct answer to "the moment everything went downhill" is with the launch of season 2.
I'd have to agree. I think the Gwimby episode was fine, but the last two feel like they were written super differently. Not a writer so I can't put my finger on it but "Alan doing an action movie adventure" and "we just go along with a moron on stage" sound like fine ideas but almost none of the jokes hit. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realize that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. Other episodes such as the recent A Allan Adventure and Shrimp's Odyssey are just silly fun. The neat thing about Smiling Friends is that you can still enjoy it even if you don't understand the message, because the writing is just that good.
