But it admittedly was still a relatively novel concept at the time to have a cartoon starring a fat protagonist. I remember when the very first piece of Clarence promo art debuted, I thought that bald-headed kid would be the main character, with the fat kid as his Patrick and the literal square as the Squidward of the group.

It was very underappreciated in its time. Give it a few more years, and everyone's gonna be real nostalgic for this show.
It was probably the most down to earth show cartoon network had in a long time, I didn't like the character designs at first but that's the only filter the show has. The show reminds me of old nick shows like Doug and Hey Arnold. My favorite detail of the show was the imperfections and different kinds of parents there are.

The advertising and character design made it look like your typical french canadian gross out cartoon. Cartoon Network had a habit of airing these kind of shit cause of how cheap they are.
