That was the plan for Arkham Knight. It was set in the Beyond era and you would be Terry. Arkham Knight was Damian and Scarecrow was a new character, the Joker and Harley's son that was foreshadowed in City. WB vetoed the idea of evil Damian and pregnant Harley and forced the Harley Quinn's Revenge DLC explicitly to abort the pregnancy.

It's kind of a shame, too, because in actuality I really really enjoy the concept of a Borderlands style co-op Suicide Squad looter shooter... just not whatever Live Service dogshit KTJL is. I mean, there are TONS of fricking villains that have been on the squad, and they go for the fricking Movie Tie-In Brigade™ in the most uncreative way possible. We could have had Ratcatcher, Copperhead, Ragdoll, KGBeast... all with signature moves and custom skill trees, different strengths and weaknesses, different roles.

Instead we have Black Deadshot who plays exactly the same was Harley Quinn does (GUNS GUNS GUNS) with the only difference that he has a fricking jetpack instead of a grappling hook. Rocksteady just didn't give enough of a shit to put the effort in.

        Anonymous

Suicide Squad was supposed to release... I think around Summer of 2023? But after initial reveal and gameplay footage was shown and it looked rather bland, they put it on hold to do more polishing work.

At the same time this was happening MK1 was nearing its polishing stage and probably on track for a late 2023 or early 2024 release date. When SS got pushed back WB Games forced the MK1 devs to push the game put early, where it lacked a decent number of casual-focused side content when compared to prior MK titles.

Credit to Netherrealm Studios for releasing the game in a pretty functional state, but it clearly needed another 3-4 months for that side content that was left on the cutting room floor.

It's like "cultural consultant". Basically you can think that samurai are cool as hell, but if you have one and he's calling everything bushido and making karate noises everywhere while non-japanese smirk and shrug about him being weird, if you're the type to want to market something culturally sensitive, you get someone who can reign that in and improve what you're really trying to out out there. If that's not what you want, have fun, that actually sounds funny.

It's hardly a nepotism issue when it's a specific field addressing a specific "concern" a video game may have. Sweet Baby is picking up low hanging fruit as a certified firm for your SJW stamp of approval needs. It's like how you'll see "cultural consultant" on films because the writers and directors may know the Wikipedia article about some indigenous tribe, but they aren't experts and may frick up.

It's like the "I love eating kiwis" debacle in New Zealand caused some negative attention due to kiwi being slang for New Zealander and them having a history of calling the natives there cannibals. True or not, it's still is an uncomfortable topic and "I didn't mean it like that" only undoes so much damage after the memes are out.

In come Sweet Baby and the job position of cultural consultant. Nepotism? Maybe, but in some cases that's synonymous with job experience, especially when experience in this new sensitivity industry is limited.

meanwhile what sweet baby inc. actually does:
              >put more women in it!
              >make them gay and black too if possible!
              >more disabled, obese, and middle eastern characters here!

Because millions of people shoot at Batman. Guns are a fun cultural thing in America and everyone has them.

But yes, good point, I too would have preferred an extended King Shark vore scene where we see Bruce squirm around a bit and until its only light twitching and then nothing, just meat in a sharks belly.

Harley walks up and pats his belly saying "Eating raw bats, huh? Don't you know that's how covid started?"

Nepotisim isn't the right word. It's a shakedown. Rent seeking behavior.

We saw what they did with mimimi. Make bullshit allegations until they get hired. Once hired, do expensive shit that if anything makes the game more sexist and racist. Game sells like garbage. and in Mimimi's case, the company is bankrupt.

Shadow Tactics did NOTHING wrong with japanese culture...but mimimi had to fix it for shadow gambit.

I'm not usually one to cry "SHILL", but there's been a pretty distinct artificial push online for this game in the run-up to its launch.
When it was first revealed way back when in one of Sony's state of plays, I think most people just thought it looked disappointingly mediocre and below Rocksteady's usual standard. There weren't very many who were excited by the gameplay reveal, or the fact that it was going to be another GaaS looter shooter where characters like Captain Boomerang and King Shark just use guns, or that it was centred around the Suicide Squad (obviously in an attempt to tie-in with the movies) fighting Superman-but-evil when fans were expecting/hoping Rocksteady to do a proper Superman or Batman Beyond game.
You had the delays after that, which made most people forget about the game, but then it was the leaks last year which made people really turn on it once they found out how shitty this story was going to be on top of everything else. And yet, suddenly, in the last month or so, you get this flood of posts and comments online talking about how they're looking forward to this game because "Rocksteady's never let me down" and how any media outlet criticising it or reporting on the numerous launch issues is obviously biased/wrong/has a vendetta/etc etc.

That's been Warner's play from the beginning. BVS, Justice League, Wonder Woman, people running their hot takes on Joss Whedon before Zack Snyder's butt is in the director's chair. WB can barely hang on these days.

Shadow of Apokolips had surprisingly good-to-decent reviews at the time. It has its jank, but so does Batman Vengeance from about the same timeframe and Batman Vengeance in many ways is a precursor to Arkham games so I don't see why improvements can't be made here as well.
            >Green Lantern
Actually decent, I'd say one of those "movie tie-in game better than the movie" things. If it was treated seriously and not like a cheap movie tie-in, could've been actually good.

Green Lantern? What studio could you possibly trust with a character whose power is "what I think of becomes real"?

Gamers yap about Superman being too OP for vidya, but his powers translate easily to action games (we've seen freezing, lasers, super strength, flying...) No studio has the tech/budget to simulate even half of what a GL ring can make.

Unfortunately, this game has been in development for over 10 years.
For all the hoopla over Zazlav's handling of WB since its purchase and the cancellation of numerous projects, his actual fault is in not being cruel enough in his cuts. More people in positions high and low needed to be fired and replaced. More shit needed to be canned. Projects needed to be shoved out the door instead of being rehabilitated, like the Flash and Aquaman 2. Zazlav was indecisive.
Think of all the backlash WBD got for cancelling Batgirl or that one Looney Tunes movie, and multiply it by 20. That's how much more bellyaching cancelling SS:KtJL would have caused, because that's how much bigger it was. Everyone who worked on these things think their project is the best thing ever, and every fan thinks they lost out on something great because it only exists in their minds. Everyone is part of the problem.

It's an indie game. As the title would imply, independent studios are more free to do shit without meddling from people who either don't know what they're talking about or have ulterior motives. The studio in question also isn't American, and is thus further from the bullshit. It's not the first time this happened, either. The industry was out for blood with Kingdom Come too. People on this board tend to use "Western" as a stand-in for "American corporations" because of the ubiquity of Marvel and DC.

Because writers rooms are filled with positions filled by networking between friends/colleagues/family of similar mindsets following market data and safe formulas ultimately sabotaged further by biased personal feelings which are also in turn sort of ironic given that we're talking about working upper class mad at the same demographic who have to work marginally less or perhaps more depending on position

        What's racist about this?

The writers hate him for being a "space cop" (Which is the most reductive way of calling the Green Lanterns when The Sinestro Corps fits that bill better) and since he's black, they're no do subtly cslling him an Uncle Tom. Worse, Deadshot, the hired killer who WORKS for Amanda Waller aka The US GOVERNMENT is saying this.

            >criminal mad about a boy scout
They're both black and he's talking about him as a black criminal looking at a black boy scout. Not seeing the problem here unless "are you implying a black guy can't talk about another black guy that way?"

are you implying that a black man would ever call another black man 'one of the good ones' simply because the latter's of good character, smart and successful? yikes you need sensitivity training stat

You're not explaining anything. You went from "It's actually hilarious how racist it is" to being unable to explain anything racist about this.

Not that anon but I'll step in. One could consider it racist to have a black character depicted as a villain show resentment towards another black character with positive personality traits trying to spin it as a negative. The term Uncle Tom refers to a black individual who follows the rules of society and works with people of other ethnicities, but is accused of being a "sellout" or "traitor"

And Deadshot is not some hoodrat gangbanger, but a professional assassin who runs on blood money, meaning he works for anyone, INCLUDING the government. Him complaining about another black guy working for the system is rich coming from him.

Villains already don't like boy scouts. A black villain bitterly commenting on a black "one of the good ones" boy scout is funny. Even funnier with that "I don't know him" comment which may imply he took offense to the question in that "not all black people know each other" way.

And Deadshot is not some hoodrat gangbanger, but a professional assassin who runs on blood money, meaning he works for anyone, INCLUDING the government. Him complaining about another black guy working for the system is rich coming from him.

How did the "Batman beats up poor people" meme start and why was someone who believes it allowed to write for a DC game?

                [...]
Apparently Deadshot is more authentically black because he's a criminal?

They obviously went with the movie version of Deadshot who was more hood.

                This isn't racist.

Actually if memory serves I believe the connection in this universe is John is the hero who put Lawton away. Deadshot is mad he got caught, and also mad at the idea of people thinking they had some long arching history.

But there definitely is some weird Uncle Tom bitterness in play here given how it's coming off

It seems like this Deadshot is basically Will Smith playing his stock character, like how he played Deadshot in the Ayers Suicide Squad movie.

NO. They went with an interdimensional one, because they already had an established white deadshot, and they REALLY wanted a black one.

              >One of the good ones
This is literally what old racist white people say to blacks they like, so they can like them while continuing to hate black people. A black man using this exact phrase to describe another black man implies the second is an Uncle Tom who only acts the way he does because he wants white people to approve of him. It's racist against both John Stewart (implying he doesn't give a shit about the black community and will suck white dick to get benefits, a stereotypical Uncle Tom) and Deadshot (crab in a bucket hood homie who would rather be a criminal than a person white people would be comfortable existing around) and was probably written by a white person.

                >and was probably written by a white person.
Deadshot is evil, hood, and is the type to sneer at society's racism that would think that, thus the quotation marks. Also Cinemaphile wants you to believe it was all written by the black lesbos at Sweet Baby so hash it out with them.

Evil people already hate boy scouts. It's been said before and it's a tired trope. Them both being black gives the villain something extra to say given how people react to a boy scout who happens to be black.

It's the wrong characterisation given that he's NOT a gang banger, but in fact a hitman.

    >Criticizing Bruce for weaponizing himself against the criminal element
As opposed to sitting on his rich ass doing nothing? Aren't all of these modern day wannabe "activists" all about taking action and tackling problems head on because they themselves don't like "The System"? Make up your fricking minds already. Evil triumphs when good men do nothing.
    >"Why doesn't Bruce try to fix the system?!!"
Great. How? People whine constantly about how "The system sucks" but offer zero solutions or even fully understand the complexities of it. Do you know who does complain about this? Bored privileged frickheads or stupid irresponsible poor people taking advantage of state funded aid. Both of which have too much time on their hands. You know what else they have in common? Thinking throwing money at the problem will fix it. And funny thing is that Bruce DOES try his best outside of Batman to make Gotham better. Charities, lobbying for better civil servants, making jobs, the list goes on. He can do a lot of things, but he can't change human nature. So what more can he do? What have YOU done?
    >Muh sidekicks
For all the badmouthing people do against Batman, saying he's a broken manchild and a horrible person, they seem ignorant to the fact that his adopted children are all prevented in becoming him. He's the father figure to step in and ensure they don't make his mistakes, to be more than just the mask. But I guess being broken children to be abandoned is better, right?
    >Accountability
Something the average person avoids. Bruce's friends/family hold him accountable, and Bruce still wants all of the criminals he put away held under the law rather than kill them.

The plot really falls apart when you starting thinking about all of the villains could have bought off with government money or strongarmed into taking this mission given the stakes involved. Because unlike the movies, Waller is intentionally pointing them at a threat way out of their league.

    Shall I list the names?
