Why didn't Spielberg say "frick that, make it actually funny!"?

i think he's old and tired
that said, even if he did say that, what were they supposed to go? go dig up the old fossils who wrote the original? they're tired, let them rest. new writers are going to suck no fricking matter what. They need a full reprogramming, not just a good classic director.
Like, look at Robin Hood Men in Tights. I like that movie, but i'm the first to admit that it's an "all Mel Brooks's players are dead or dying, so here's modern-people doing modern-today-jokes" situation. imagine if he directed a movie today. do you really think it would be ANY good?

oh wait, he did. and i guess it was middlin. i forgot about history of the world part II.

    >It had Steven Spielberg back and he was the main driving force behind the original

Tom Ruegger was the main driving force behind the original, and he didn't come back. Behind him were all of the other writers, none of them came back, either. Just the VAs came back.

Spielberg is just the producer. But you knew that. It's no surprise at all that this sucked. No one from the original was involved. They hired some Family Guy showrunner and Spmco alum who didn't like the original Amblin shows and turned this into Ren & Stimpy meets Family Guy with a coat of Animaniacs looking paint over it.

      >no one from the original was involved
You just said Spielberg was the producer and he came back for the reboot

A producer doesn’t necessarily do any work at all on a show. They might make it happen financially and that’s all. At best he rubber stamps it and that is not remotely the same as writing or working on it. It’s not at all like having Tom Ruegger back and you know it.

And despite all of that, they were deeply afraid of bringing back Hello Nurse lmao. Another W for Tom

They could bring her back if they wanted to. They could strip her down to a thong if they wanted to. But they knew to appeal to the heterophobic sensibilities of millennials because they were the easiest market to grift off at that point in time.

Basedlennials are absolute trash in all honesty, If I ever make a show I want it to be as unappealing to them as possible

I hope that rumor about a Freakazoid vs The Meme Master movie is fake.

Freakazoid just having the Teen Titans Go crossover is probably the best thing for him since it's better then the other reboots despite being a single episode

Spielberg has been attached to millions of bad things. It's not the 80's anymore where everyone is still fapping to Indiana Jones and ET.

So why did he let the Animaniacs reboot be the way it was?

Without Tom Ruegger it had no chance.

The original Animaniacs was also just an endless stream of references to random shit and political figures from the time period. Animaniacs was never fricking "good" or "smart", it was always just nothing but the same shit as the reboot except with more characters and segments, only ONE of which was good (Slappy) with the rest being utter dog shit like the baby and dog or boring as piss like goodfeathers. Chicken Boo is in the middle because it's the same joke every time but sometimes funny.

The reboot was crammed full of embarrassing cringeworthy shit about Trump and girlbosses, but the original was the exact same shit except it was 90s culture instead. The reboot sucks ass and the original sucks ass.

If you want a REAL show with references and a random character that is good, you watch Freakazoid. Not any of this trash.

Cope. nu-Animaniacs sucks because it wants to make jabs at people, not be funny.

While I agree that the reboot does indeed suck, I don't think the original was all that great to start with either. Which is really all the more telling of how bad the reboot is.

Because its a Hollywood inside joke machine which worked due to film and cinema still being still relevant when it was airing.

Now that hollywood's only life source is capeshit, a sbig shot israelites like Spielberg has no relevance. Showing a shot of Danny Devito saying a funny line in a cutaway gag does not work since the audience forgot about him or doesn't even know who he is. The reboot came out at the worst time possible too.

The 80-90's culture was referenced, because it was riddled with these snippets around film culture, politics, and Hollywood execs still gave a shit. Then came the TV-era with CGI and everyone realized its shittons easier and cheaper to hire some indians and chinese to do the work than paying a 50+ y.o veteran animator.
Now what would they even reference or parody? Make a gag about Mr Beast, falling into a well he dug, or what? Make a political joke? Thats like pouring petrol over yourself now and lighting it up.
Nothing worhty came out from hollywood in 20+ years, as its just capeslop factory. HD cameras lost the movie charm too, everything looks like it was made by a livestreamer with amateur-ish cameras, as the ones which can replicate that "movie magic" cost way too much, not produced anymore, and the people who know how the handle them are retired.

They really should have made Hello Nurse the new CEO instead of that ugly annoying b***h. Writing her out of the show is such a goddamn crime.

Seriously, it would be so fitting since she's got a shitload of PhDs and it can be the perfect way to get revenge on Wako and Yako for being horny fricks by bossing them around to do whatever she desired like slaves. "HHEEELLLLOOOO C E OOOOO!!!"

That and it would’ve given more to her character. She wouldn’t be a one-note caricature anymore. The worst aspect of reboots removing “problematic” characters is that instead of rewriting them to be better people, they just get lazy and pretend like they never existed.

Steven Spielberg is not the -creative- driving force behind the reboot. The role and level of involvement of a producer can vary greatly, and there's no evidence of Spielberg being active in beyond lending his name and permission. The man is 77, and his last movie felt like a farewell film. He's probably quiet-retired.
The current age of entertainment, which the industry contraction and strikes will hopefully pull us out of, is full of charlatan activists backed by blind money from people without any kind of creative vision. Even if Spielberg had a more active role, would he have been able to assemble a good creative team in this environment? Remember whom this show was made for - Hulu, an arm of Disney. They're the ones who paid for this. Knowing what we know about the company now, do you think they would have allowed a show with the original creative crew?

Spielberg was probably barely involved and even if he wants it would still suck because he hasn't made anything good in like thirty years
