Obama removed the Smith-Mundt ACT so that these broadcasting companies and shows are paid by the government to stay on. Same reason why disaster woke movies that lose money is still the go to. Same reason why twitter had hundreds of useless mostly female staff doing absolutely nothing.

I heard years ago that comedians used to consider an audience reaction of "clapping but not laughing" to be a kiss of death. It means that the person performing said something that was very broadly agreeable but not actually funny. It seems like ever since 2016 most talk show hosts have willingly jumped into that position. We make fun of people like Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel on here but I've watched some of their clips and they genuinely seem to be going for approving applause rather than laughs. Colbert is the worst by far but it's the approach in general. It's a very weird approach compared to what people in those positions used to go for.
Laughing means surprising people, and if you surprise someone important with an opinion they don't agree with, you get cancelled. Better to just make them feel good for holding the "right" opinions. Social media has killed the concept of a joke.
