The first series was good, basically a film each week; the "intelligence=literal superpowers" shit didn't start cropping up until series 2 and didn't get silly until series 3, though in retrospect Moriarty acting like the Joker in final minutes of series 1 should have been a warning sign.

I always have this stupid thing in my head where when they filmed Sherlock Cumberpatch would be a total sperg. Screaming in the way he did for his Smaug mo-cap stuff, proclaiming Martin Freeman (but calling him 'Free man of Martin') the he is the greatest actor to have ever lived, etc. and overall coming like a deranged nutcase butthole but everyone else is adoring of him and going like 'oh, he is so eccentric!' whilst Freeman is the straight man that responds to such a sperg like how a real person one and has this perpetual loathing brood whenever Cumberpatch is around being a moronic sperg and driven mad over he is the only when that can see this

The Mind Palace stuff got really out of hand in Season 3. Here, the depiction is goofy but the concept is sound; it's just a visualization of a memory technique. In season 3 you have the antagonist literally control ALL OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION because he...remembers everyone's dirty secrets, in his head. Without collecting any actual, tangible evidence to release because apparently that *isn't* smart?

        SEE

I understand why intelligence is depicted in silly ways in the series, but even so, I will never understand why Moffatt decided "she's so smart that she can HYPNOTIZE YOU because... she's so smart!" without showing any actual manipulative tactics would be a good idea. Like if she had blackmail or picked up on the guard's insecurities it'd make some sense, at least, but it's literally a case of "if you're with her for a minute she can make you have a nice day without fail", it's fricking stupid.

Sherlock's intelligence is portrayed as borderline superhuman on this show. Mycroft being smarter is already a stretch.

As the show goes on, it becomes increasingly clear that Sherlock only hangs out with people who aren't as smart as him to try to maintain the illusion that he's a super genius.

yeah that didnt make sense, he was always a good boxer at least

The 2009 Sherlock Holmes was good but not the sequel. There was no mystery solving in it; the movie begins with Holmes explaining that he already solved the mystery and now let's go have bad action and chase sequences for 2 hours.

        agree
it was fun spectacle and interesting cause it was Moriarty, but there was no detective stuff or mystery as you say

Jonathan Creek is a much better modern Sherlock Holmes adaption, at least in spirit.

Series 1 and 2 were pretty good, and marginally faithful to the original books. Cumbersnatch carried the role really well.

      >Makes fun of anyone who bothered making theories because they couldn't come up with anything

This has always been a problem of Moffat's - he doesn't know how to resolve his plots, so often he'll lean into the details not being revealed and paper it over with a statement by the characters that "HOW it happened was never the point". This can work in Doctor Who, but with a Sherlock Holmes adaption - which is fundamentally founded on rational explanation - it feels more insulting than anything else.

The guy who played Magnussen in series 3 or the cabbie in episode 1 would have both made better antagonists. Really, the cabbie from the first episode felt like the most realistic depiction of a criminal genius hiding in plain sight.

I thought that was Moriarty at first. What a let down.
