I always liked El Dorado because of the time period of culture pieces of Imperial Spain and Mesoamerican culture, which you never saw a lot of in most media. Story wise though it does feel a little disjointed. I think the blatant blood magic ritual in the middle of the movie kind of frick up the narrative. When I was younger I thought that scene was awesome but looking back it kind of comes out of left field in an otherwise down to earth setting.

The entire adventure through the jungle bit that was covered in a single song should have definitely been the meat of the movie. Racing against Cortez to reach an abandoned but guarded city of gold culminating in an escape and a Quest/Friendship > Treasure resolution

Damn, Glendale facility really started to eat shit after Prince of Egypt flopped. A shame because none of those are particularly bad they just feel like they don't have a firm footing on the story they actually want to tell. I feel like almost every single one of their movies would have been better if they were allowed to get much darker. The hints a darker tone is in each movie (sans sharktale) but it feels like they're pulling themselves back to appeal to a broader audience.

Spirit in particular I always thought missed an opportunity to be an actually good look into the historical struggles of the native Americans. The entire movie should have been focused on the Lakota kid dealing with the American army fricking over his tribe. Instead it's just every horse girl's favorite movie.

Prince of Egypt didn't flop, it made 3 times its budget and put Dreamworks on the map as an actual competitor to Disney. It's El Dorado that flopped.

Glendale facility of Dreamworks only made 2D films in their early years. After El Dorado flopped in 2000, they chose to make both 2D and CG films, with Shark Tale being the first CG one. However, in july 2003, Sinbad flopped so hard that they cancelled plans to make more 2D films (some were already pitched) and decided to only make CG ones. Shark Tale was over halfway finished by that point

Anon, it did so well it became several sequels and a couple TV shows.
And the Netflix show (which parents consider "safe" so they put it on and leave it to babysit the toddlers) became the benchmark that all other Netflix animated series got judged by. Boss Baby killed Netflix animation and dealt a serious blow to Western animation in general. It did that well despite being that shitty.

DreamWorks went to shit after Shrek 2.
Then went back to being kino when KFP started.
Then went to shit again after Rise of the Guardians.

It's a damn tragedy. Monsters vs. Aliens, Shrek, and Kung Fu Panda were fun. Megamind was excellent. KFP2 and How To Train Your Dragon gave me hope for Western animation.

And now look at them. Boss Baby 3 on the horizon.

what a banal and pointless sequel this was. It felt like a different studio trying to copy the first film

Kung Fu Panda 2 might be one of my least favorite animated films ever. It's just so... bad. There is no fricking personality or originality whatsoever, just mindless repetitive action, cringy humor, expository dialogue and cliched drama

Big Boys song completely ruins that movie. It is really not as good as people think anyways. If it were a story from any other religion people wouldn't care.

Prince of Egypt had very pretty animation, but the whole "our religion is way better than Egypt's" thing was always silly. Glorified Vegitales.
