How would've this been received back then if instead of being it's own thing it was released as a Gundam AU, with everything else left unchanged but instead of knightmares they use mobile suits?

Exactly the same as back then.
You seriously think Gundam isn't a nonstop trainwreck? Have you seen what it does to this board every time a new series airs?

It wouldn't have become popular with normies because of the Gundam name since for them 'Geass isn't really mecha, it's about the characters'.
That being said, Geass is considered like an honorary Gundam since it's debut, too many similar tropes and characters.

Geass is basically what if Char was the MC and also a Zabi.

        L-Gaim did it first

          Daba isn't a Char.

No, but he's far more underhanded than a protagonist was at that time. When he was dropping those meteorites, he was almost Char-levels of buttholery. And you can tell he was manipulating Amu and Leccee (though he's not sociopathic and did genuinely care for them as friends) since they had feelings for him.

Daba is definitely a more gray character. He's still a "good guy" albeit for somewhat selfish reasons like avenging his clan while simultaneously doing a righteous mission in overthrowing Poseidal. Lelouch is probably just a bit more to the right of Daba on the scale. It's actually refreshing to see guys like Daba and Lelouch because good doesn't mean nice and sometimes you have to be a ruthless bastard to get things done.

      >Geass isn't really mecha
      >Read Geass manga that adapts TV series plot but without mecha
      >Its completely shit and makes no sense without the mecha
This will always be a moronic thing they said

Normies would refuse to watch it because "hurr durr mecha bad Gundam old", which would have probably been a good thing, Gundam fans would consider it similarly to SEED Destiny or Wing, with the majority of people disliking it and a minority praising it (more or less same as now basically)

Code Gayass is an honorary Gundam TV show

Suzaku's a good pilot, but he never struck me as being on the same level as Amuro. His main thing is being just as if not more bullshit outside a mech, but to be fair I guess that makes up for the lack of Newtype hax.

Suzaku is an extremely gifted pilot. One of his biggest claims to fame in-universe is that in his very first time in a simulator, before he ever piloted anything, he score all S ranks in every category and had been the first person to ever do this.

It would've gotten the praise it deserves (none).

It would have been more popular. Code Geass was still very popular, surely, but with the power of the Gundam franchise, it'd be like 2x-5x as well-known and maybe they'd have released more/better model kits.

Geassgays won't admit that code geass borrows many elements from Gundam so the only spiel they could argue is how Code geass is simply better because the animation is way flashier and the writing is more basic and easily digestible compared to 0079

      >the animation is way flashier
Why is it so hard for most Gundam AUs to have good animation?

It only ever found success by riding on the coattails of Death Note anyway. It would probably be even less popular among normies if it had the Gundam name slapped onto it.

It'd be way less popular since as popular as Gundam is among mecha fans, been attached to that huge franchise would put normal anime fans off giving it a shot.
