      Woke wins again

It's the lowest grossing entry in the series without even adjusting for inflation.

Oh wow it broke even after 3 fricking weeks and is about to be kicked off screens by Wonka

      Weird?

      WEIRD!

It was pretty kino and I haven't even read the books or seen any of the original movies past the first (which sucked)

Catching Fire is a good action/adventure movie and has lots of interesting worldbuilding.
The books are pretty good, the last one was the best one but they botched the adaptation

It need 500m to break even with marketing costs factored in. Open a thread then.

      I don't think you're right...
      >The budget:100m
      >Marketing(because of strikes it had like 2-3 weeks for it):50m(at max)
That means it needs 300m+ to break even

Cranking up marketing so that it has the same effect in less time is actually more expensive.
Marketing for this is probably 300m just by itself.

By that logic it means this movie needs 800m+ WW which none of the HG film crossed (except for catching fire)

There's couple of reason for it:
      1)No JLaw in this movie
      2) it's a prequel about most hated character in HG
      3)The main actors aren't famous
      4)Hollywood lost China

        Anonymous

3 and 4 are irrelevant. Hunger Games is what made Jlaw famous and while Peeta was a child actor, he wasn't exactly a household name. China was also never a huge market for these movies. Remove them from all the earlier ones and this is still far and away the lowest grossing entry.

Russia was never a big market for American movies, they’ve always had their own industry

No shit, it's a prequel and a spinoff about the main villain's origin story. It was still great.

I've never read any of the books and only watched the first movie once 10 years ago. What subject matter do you think would have been better received, commercially and critically, then a villains origin?

Snow and Lucy are better characters than Katniss so yes.

Same, it's unironically the HG movie I enjoyed the most and it works great as a stand-alone character drama.

One thing I enjoyed is how Lucy Gray never looks back and is always ready to leave everything and everyone behind because she's a gypsy and part of a travelling troupe since before the war, so there are no roots.
I loved how dubious are the actions of the characters and some events. Like, you never know if it's backstabbing or just an unfortunate coincidence like the snake in the scarf or if Lucy was part of the rebels or just knew them.

Especially if you've read the book you can see Lucy is a lot more pro-active and manipulative and doesn't spend the book obsessing over one guy like Katniss with Peeta.

as a rule of thumb you quadruple the budget for marketing, double the number again for theater take, then add another $400m for good measure
it's not looking good for woke hollywood

Good that the movie with the White male lead returned the investment. Still, seeing that it was least profitable in the series it would be long before the next one. Return of the Teen Dystopian movies is delayed. Still, glad that it beat The Marvels.

even if it broke even they probably wanted to make at least 500 million on it. They didn't vaporize their money, but it's obviously a big disappointment for them.

I got the book trilogy when I was a kid and I remember to enjoy it. Time passed and the news about a prequel with Snow looked so dumb to me I just ignored it completely, then I watched the movie and it was surprisingly good.
Honestly, I never expected such good characters in a story like this. Lucy Gray and her songs were pure kino.

Here's my prediction for final numbers:
    Domestic:170-180m
    International:180-200m
    Overall:350-380m

Breaking even means no profit, that is: losing money. Doing it only after 3 weeks means the movie (predictably) flopped.

    >broke even
Not yet. This film needs to make $300 mil world wide to break even.

    Reported production budget: $100 mil
    Estimated marketing costs: (production budget x .5) $100 mil x .5 = $50 mil
Total estimated costs: (production budget + marketing) $100 mil + $50 mil = $150 mil
    Studio earnings: (worldwide box office x .5) $251 mil x . 5 = $125.5 mil

It's getting there and will probably make it, but as it stands right now, it's still about $25 mil away from breaking even.

    >mfw I'd forgotten that Snow was the name of the bad guy from the original series so I thought him turning into a bad guy and Midge being the good guy was really unexpected and kino
