also i'll add to this that the ritual scene is like a warped reflection of the party at the beginning of the film. The ritual is like a metaphor for the sexual psychology going on at the original party. It is showing what the party at the start of the film really is in plain view. Its a ritual we practice for mates. The use of masks in the ritual is a metaphor for the outward masks that the guests at the party have for their exterior. The ritual scene is where Cruise's character becomes aware of this fact, that the party is basically all predicated on everyone's dark sexual desires hidden behind a mask of normalcy. Including him and his wife, who themselves are flirting and enticed by members of the opposite sex throughout the party.

Just look at Will and Jada's marriage. This element of the story was a completely realistic portrayal of women. The biggest problem with the story was that Tom Cruise's character got his comeupance from playing with fire but Nicole Kidman's character did not have a similar experience. Her character shouldn't have been neglected like that because it leaves a hole in the relationship development.
