Because Athrun was the most interesting character in SEED/Destiny. He was the deuteragonist; something we rarely saw in a Gundam series before and arguably the 2nd half of SEED was more about him. Athrun had the character development and self-introspection when he finally decided to join forces with Orb and oppose the fanaticism of his father and ZAFT hardliners.

Because he felt like he was sitting around doing nothing and jumping back to ZAFT would at least be doing something. The thing is, if he wanted to do "something", why go to ZAFT instead of staying at Orb and pilot for Cagalli? Also, why isn't the fake Lacus an immediate deal-breaker for him?
I argued this shit before: it would make sense if Athrun joined Durandal's side to spy on him and figure out his plans.
That's because you understand storytelling. Fukuda and Morosawa couldn't write for shit. Even SEED insulted viewers like Kira appearing in Lacus' care without any exposition or build-up.
Honestly Morosawa obviously didn't think it through. She just wanted Athrun away from Orb and Cagalli and didn't think about whether or not the reasoning she gave him made any sense.
Most of the writing in Destiny is Fukuda or Morosawa going 'I want X to happen next', with little thought into HOW or WHY they get there.

Orb technically wasn't at war when he made his decision so he felt like he was just wasting time sitting around, especially when Durandal called out his talent going to waste.

This isn't the argument you think it is. If Athrun feels the need to do "something", then he just comes off as an impulsive moron. But, unlike Shinn or Kira early on, his jumping around has to be "justified".
Also, it's amusing that, despite quoting it, you completely ignored the point about Meer.
I mean the Meer stuff is addressed in the show itself. He needed her to stop the protests asking for war, which seemingly convinced Athrun to go along with it. It's not necessarily a good explanation, but there was an attempt to address it.
Meer was helping the war effort though, not speaking out against it.
Athrun also wasn't respected in Orb. He was just a random bodyguard for hire under a fake name who Yuna basically tells to piss off once he delivers Cagalli back home. In Zaft he was famous and respected, although that quickly died out when they saw how reluctant he was to fight. Rejoining gave him elite status and a shiny new Gundam.
In Orb he was only able to get his status back because team Kira was in operation by then, something that wasn't a thing when Destiny started.
Cagalli is lucky to have ditched him then.

This may be a shock to some but I think one of us should post this here instead of having you guys read it from somewhere else.
The following is an excerpt from an interview with Morosawa (scriptwriter of Gundam Seed and Gundam Seed Destiny) in the November issue of Animage.
Q. We would like to hear what you have to say concerning the relationships in Gundam Seed Destiny.
A. Only Shinn and Lunamaria are truly in love. Kira and Lacus have already settled down (pass the "in love" stage), Athrun and Cagalli's love is a misunderstood love. It seems like Cagalli doesn't seem to like Athrun a great deal.
Q. But they do seem to care for each other.
A. It is true that Athrun is very gentle to Cagalli. But I think that's because he is someone very honest, someone who wanted to be a part of Cagalli's power, someone who wanted to help her, which resulted in his action (being gentle to Cagalli) naturally. But Cagalli has her country to care for, so she can't care for only Athrun.
Q. At the end, Cagalli chose Orb over Athrun.
A. I believe, if Cagalli can choose both Orb and Athrun, start over and learn to face Athrun again, then they may truly be able to become lovers. Of course, Athrun would have to work hard as well. Just staying by Cagalli's side and following her around won't work. Cagalli wishes to protect her country. That's why he has to step up to a position where he can lead the world to peace.

A. Right. To an extreme, he can propose to her after he becomes the chairman of Plant. *laughs* If he can't do that, it'll be hard for Cagalli and him to have a peaceful/smooth relationship.

Talia and Durandal split because they weren't genetically compatible to have kids and Talia wanted a child. There's no official rules or anything there. And we know Kira and Lacus have have kids because Kira is first Gen

Why would Athrun give her a ring at that point? His emotional motive for doing so wasn’t “love,” it was “anxiety.” Returning to reality, the love between those two is incredibly anxious. Something I wanted to show in SEED DESTINY is if you can waded through the raging torrent that is reality and still not waver, your love is true. So in the start, when I called it a “misunderstanding,” I suppose some people were surprised by that.
ーBut it isn’t that their love itself was an illusion, right?

They must have their own way of loving one another, but they still have to work together from here to find it. It isn’t like I’m trying to break up their relationship or something, I wrote all of this because I love them, so I hope I haven’t been misunderstood.

Cagalli fawns on Athrun in her own way, but it’s the kind of fawning that a girl who grew up around grown men knows, like the way Uzumi and Kisaka fawned on her. But Athrun's young, so he doesn’t understand it, and gets pushed around by her. Athrun has his pride, so even if he were really lonely and wanted to depend on someone, he couldn’t say so. Even he has a weak side, of course. Basically everyone leaves him, and there’s no way he’s totally okay with that.
ーHe was the one who gave Cagalli a ring when they left Orb, opposing Yuna.

Right, for AsuCaga to work, Athrun needs to become the leader of PLANT, a coordinator-supermajority nation that has engrained racist undertones (recall his nervousness at listening to random people when arriving at Armory One in Destiny) against naturals, with the leader of Orb, an aristocracy/const. monarchy that places cultural hegemony above race. That's sure to go well when they're both managing the affairs of their respective nations and the inevitable zero-sum conflict of interests arise.
I can't tell if Morosawa is only saying this much because she doesn't want to piss off the fangirls by outright saying "Athrun and Cagalli are like high school boyfriend and girlfriend that split up after graduation (war)" or if she's too dumb to think through the ramifications of what she's saying.

In my view Cagalli's ideal husband would be some everyman who can smile and wave but is okay being a stay at home dad while she runs the country. That the most time her children would spend with her would be 1) In the womb 2) Grooming her heir to eventually succeed her, while all others fall to the way side.
My headcanon is Sho Ta Flaga is some adopted 2nd/3rd son of another family subbing in for the family head while they're sick/kidnapped/whatever; its temporary but enough time to establish a relationship that we can infer goes places later on.
As a side note: What are your thoughts on the Eclipse manga? Will it be relevant to SEED Freedom?
SEED isn't shy about tying in side stories into the main plot so good chance it will.

Think this idea through to its logical conclusion: Is it worth it to join 2 distinct nations together just so their leaders (one hereditary, one elected to a term) can have a functional relationship? Probably not. Doubly so considering how different Orb and PLANT are.
PLANT is the coordinator supermajority nation. While the racists/supremacists have been removed from power they are not gone forever - and likely never will be.
Orb values culture (exemplified by the Athhas iron-clad devotion to their "ideals") over race and is an aristoracy/const. monarchy where the ruling families are a mix of naturals and coordinators.
They can be allies and trading partners but never be the "one people" a successful nation state requires.

The problem was always scheduling. TM was a big famous star back then and was constantly touring and making special tv appearances and what not so while he could do a couple sessions he wasn't the kind of guy who could commit to showing up every week for several months to record. TM isn't as big as he used to be and even if he was a movie's recording sessions would only be the equivalent of a few episodes ie: exactly what he could spare the time for to begin with.
So there's no forced reason to kill any character this time, but they could do it just for consistency.
I think the whole evil Kira thing will be a red herring. Kira having an epiphany about Gilbert's Destiny plan would've got me more hyped. That would make for a more interesting movie.
I know the movie isn't even out yet. The writing from SEED tends to make Kira infallible. So, if Kira went to the dark side and decides to adopt Gilbert's Destiny Plan, I will watch that.

Among Fukuda's awful ideas, I really don't see him fully contradicting on Destiny's events to have Kira become the harbinger of a genetic caste system. It makes more sense if the plot leans on Kira's self-righteousness in the dilemma that exists between "war is awful and must be stopped at any cost" and "the world must bend to my will and power".

There is a logic to that claim. The Destiny Plan forces the entire world into a stasis. You get assigned a role at birth and that's it. There's no evolution possible at any level. Furthermore, Fukuda recycled a similar concept in Cross Ange, with Embryo's utopia created to his likeness.
