>Guidelines for a successful thread
1-Stay on topic, no one cares about your personal drama.

2-Talk about your creative process.

3-Ask questions, give answers. This thread isn’t here just to promote your ego.

4-Explain criticism. People will only get better if they actually have an explanation for why something doesn’t work in their comic. Just saying “this is shit” does nothing.

5-Don’t be a b***h when someone gives you criticism. It’s fine to disagree with their point, but don’t take it personally.

6-Don’t beg for fanart. This isn’t the drawthread and nobody owes you anything.

7-Don’t complain I’d nobody replies to your post. You aren’t entitled to a (you)

8-Have fun and create stuff

I never had any trouble with the english version, it was the spanish version of the chapter 4 that got reported.
Webtoon didn't specify which part of the chapter contains the alleged hate speech. A character simply says 'motherfricker,' and that's it.

that's clearly hateful towards mother frickers

untrue. my style varies and no one recognizes my work from one to the next lmao. which is fine, but i can understand why other people dont want to fall into that trap. plus, theres a reason names are an option on Cinemaphile. its a feature that might as well be used

Thank you for reading!! I was in the middle of writing a 25000 word essay just complaining about webtoon not responding my emails, and then they send me this.
            >Uncensored foul language is not allowed on WEBTOON. Words like 'shit,' 'frick,' 'prostitute,' etc., need to be edited.
So that's it. I'm going to have to censor a bunch of things in the upcoming chapters.

I just started reading your comic. the lines are clean and it looks really professional. I appreciate the disclaimer at the beginning, and the pacing of the intro is delightful. I'm fascinated with the main character, and i love how absolutely dynamic the setting and movements are. My only gripes right now are that you dont have a functional about page or a functional guestbook. I feel like an about page would really help me understand what to look forward to in your comic even more, helping me keep it in the back of my mind. The guest book also seems important (esp. a modded one) so I can see what other people are talking about, like fan theories or talking about other things they've seen from you. I feel like the sense of community is missing from your work as a brand, even though the concept/art itself is there. I hope you're able to get those things running soon, because the rest is a great start to a long and cool body of work.

            [...]
tapas is doing this super weird thing where its loading the pictures really slow. im wondering if that's due to the large size files being uploaded?? I'm not super sure how all that works. After I like, waited a few minutes for all the pictures to load though I see a comic with a really pleasing artstyle and great pacing. It's hard to nail that vertical format pacing but I think you've really got it. There are a few typos and grammar issues in the english version, so perhaps look into getting an english beta reader or a good editor, because otherwise these issues take away from the gravity of the drama being displayed. I appreciate your use of colors, they're very down to earth while also popping. I want to pay more attention to the story, but I keep getting distracted by those grammar issues and only slightly awkward dialogue so I'm having trouble wanting to click episode 2. I have a feeling that in the (original?) spanish, its a much smoother read.

Thank you very much. To be honest, I don't have much confidence in my drawing skills, but I'm really glad you like it. As for the dialogue, many people have told me that English isn't my strong suit, and rightly so; I struggle to figure out how to express myself. I agree that it's much easier to read my comic in Spanish, but I'll do my best to improve the English version.

That’s a shame. I feel like your use of foul language adds to the characters and the atmosphere. It’s not gratuitous.
It sucks you have to censor yourself, but at least you don’t be deplatformed.

Semi relevant, I've actually been trying to make a comic about a circus. The only thing stopping me is the current detour to learn how to draw men better.

the art style is really cute. really unclean, but there is a charm to that. i think that backgrounds and colors could add a lot of good to what already has a lot of energy. I bet this is a rough draft/sketch, but in my opinion your art doesn't need to improve. I think what you need to focus on now is 1) drawing bubbles and placement, 2) backgrounds 3) cleaning up your sketches -- not even adding lineart, but just cleaning what you already have, and 4) backgrounds with color. I think the guy looks fine, and other aspects of what I mentioned is more important to completing a finished work. If you're not happy with how you draw men I do get that, but to me both the clown and the other guy feel both like men at a glance, and I like the variance in character design so I think it's fine. The distinct style difference between characters already gives this feel that you know what you're doing to the reader. Anyway, best of luck.

Just finished a comic! I’m on a streak!

Okay I laughed. I wasn't sure what to expect from this, but STRESSFUL & STRESSFUL got me. Also the multicultural elements are actually really cute. I'm not a huge fan of very cartoon-y art styles so I almost didn't give this a chance, but it's pretty wholesome. I'm interested in seeing what you do in the future.

yo this looks so cool and beautiful and well paced that i unironically have the inclination to want to wait until its finished so i can binge it all in one go. It's just so pretty and moody. There are a lot of different camera angles for interest and the lines and toning only gets better as it goes. I can feel the love of the work in the lines. I can definitely see why the drafting process would take so long. I'm not one to draft my work quickly either *two works for a single chapter for me, yeesh), so I do understand your dilemma. Recently for me, I realized that my process was really different from others, and not doing what worked for me hindered my work. I'm

when i start making a comic, i have to be up really late and thumbnail a whole chapter in one sitting, or else I second guess myself and dont get anywhere. Then I have to commit to those thumbs after blowing them up on my tablet and start on my clean draft, without changes. I'm the type that thinks a lot before the process, not during. People say your first idea is never the best one but its what i have to do to get anything done.

so that's what my personal process is like. If you want to get faster at drafting, perhaps set a timer and try to see how much you can get done within 30 minutes to an hour of drafting every day, then spend the next ten minutes self-critiquing ithat draft. I also hear that making a single line on something every day helpes you think about it and get faster at at (I have tried this with drafting myself and it did help, but I couldnt commit.) Godspeed to your work anon, I hope you continue to make badass pages in the future.

I read the first chapter of your work, and there are a lot of good points. For one, the panels arrangements are very fun and interesting and dont take away from the flow of your story. Honestly not many people are able to make a fantastic page layout that is varied and also easily readable. I think many people could learn from you. Furthermore, the gifs that pop up in your story are really cool and just give it that extra pop, and I never expect when it will happen. Things like that really escalate your world and make it feel whole. I really like the character dynamics and the power play that always feels like its at work. The brutality of the fights feel earned and are satisfying. The line weight and character faces can be rough on the eyes (which takes away from the varied expressions), but I can also see your art improving as he story goes on. All that said, you have 15.9k views and 86 subscribers so I feel like the ratio points to the idea that your comic still could use improvements. So as far as critique, I think there needs to be more establishing shots of the buildings and structures and where they are in comparison to the other settings. I don't really get a sense of where all the characters are in the world, and it just sort of feels like they appear and the backgrounds appear with them. Every place is very jumpy and jarringly different from the last. In chapter one for example, we see a bar, a tower, a sci-fi room, what seems to be a balcony, a farm, and a large clearing, and I don't have a lot of context for what is where. What backgrounds do show up are really blobby and clunky and its hard to tell what they are because of the lack of details. Theres also SO much lore being dumped at one time. Which CAN work in some stories, but I think with the jarring backgrounds and the rough linework can make your work feel overwhelming and also immature. There is a lot of passion here and I'm rooting for you.

Not Ardhi, but almost every form of content has a discrepancy from views to followers, that’s just how things are. So having less subs than views doesn’t mean quality is bad, there’s a lot of people who read what’s on the front page or people who read without an account. whoooaaaa
thanks for reading and for the review!
I am, I have to say, painfully aware of most of these failings. I did try with the establishing shots (tower, inside of tower) but often I feel I'm bad at conveying them. I would ask you to read more and tell me if its something that becomes better or not as the story goes but, to be honest, you reading one chapter is already great and I dont want to push.

          >lineweight
painful thing I have a lot of issue working with. guess is what I'll try to study after im done with my current practice.

Regarding readercount yeah, I think its pretty obvious that there might be some amateurish aspect of the writing or art in the first chapter scaring potential readers away. The loredump is the worse part. The first chapters are incredibly heavy in exposition and I struggle hard to make it natural. The result you see there was a lot of effort and its both a bit confirming yet dissapointing to know its still too heavy on it.

Anyways at this point im rambling too much to say that I agree with the critique. With that said, I do believe I get better in a few of those aspects. The issue is whether I want to fall for the trap of redoing chapter one to try to attract readers or I stick with it.

            >lineweight
I hear you with that. If you ever try doing the lineart in vectors, you can adjust the line width after you finish drawing them, which could be something to look into.Heres a tutorial of how to do that in clip studio paint. https://tips.clip-studio.com/en-us/articles/600#7426c312
            >The issue is whether I want to fall for the trap of redoing chapter one to try to attract readers or I stick with it.
I'm just spitballing, but maybe theres a way to have the best of both worlds. Instead of redoing the first chapter, perhaps it would be good to make a one-shot that shows off your improved skills while also giving a tad bit of context for chapter one's exposition. For instance, if you made a one-shot prologue or something, it could point new readers towards your work while giving them context for your longer comic. Perhaps a potential story could be showing what your character was really getting into trouble for in those first chapters (getting tricked or helping people, actively being kind at his own time and expense) -- just as an example.
But thats just an idea and you can even do it further down the line when you're more comfortable, even. The important thing is that you're aware of your own work, which is hard to come by and can be a great asset for you.

That's a good idea and what I'm planning to do one day with Oi- make a Bard School one shot that show's Young Bryan's journey through bard school. It might be jarring when readers go from the new art back to the old bad worst art in chapter one, but then again if they like they one shot enough they'll be more likely to stick with it because they know the art improves.

Thank you for the help anon.
Perhaps yeah something like that could work. I don't like prologues but it could be a kind of extension. I fear redoing the first chapter because I feel its a neverending cycle "shouldnt I also fix chapter 2 then?" and so on, but it does pain me a bit that I think the whole thing has some issues.

Either way for now I will focus on finishing this arc and then plan better. One thing I do know is that after my current chapter the exposition significantly tones down and the story kicks into gear.

Remember. If heathcliff can become a popular comic then anything can.
On that note, if you have no other recourse, then your only option IS to draw it yourself. There's no shortage of tutorials and guides online. It's only a matter of figuring out what exactly YOU want and then working towards it.

After one particular dull anon yammered on of being unable to do so even when other anon's best efforts to educate them, they had grown tired and made a comic best explaining the situation of a man who has 'Never pet a dog' and despite the owners best efforts of said dog to teach the man to do it, the man could not do so through there own ineptitude and unwillingness to let there own curiosity or adapt there situation to simply 'pet the dog'.

That's not a valid reason. You won't get professional-level, maybe, but most webcomic art doesn't need to reach that level. All you really need to do are learn the basics of anatomy (to give the subject shape), value (the differences and utilization between light and dark tones on a page), some basic composition, and some basic writing form ("Keep It Simple, Stupid," some of The Elements of Style, how to set up a joke, maybe some extra shit like Save The cat or the Hero's Journey but as long as you know what a 3-Act Structure is then you should be good).

                >pet the dog
The frick are you on about?

There's a comic that gets passed around infrequently here where someone sees a dog being walked. The guy wants to pet the dog while its owners give him permission. He keeps making excuses that he doesn't know how and shit like that, and the owners keep getting frustrated because he doesn't even try. Eventually they leave and the dude just feels sorry for himself.

And none of us are gonna help you or teach you if you won't even do the bare minimum of pick up a pencil/pen and put it on paper. Hell even if you made a shitty MS Paint comic we'd probably be nicer. You can't just randomly learn to draw, dumbass. You gotta start that shit practically out of the womb or else it isn't happening. No amount of reference material or scam "art classes" is going to radically alter the way human physiology works.

                >Audiences absolutely demand perfection.
No, they don't. They expect the bare minimum of competence from studios with millions of dollars in backing. Webcomics do not get held to that same standard because there is only one or a few handfuls of people working ln them.
Think of it this way. A lot of people here post weekly at best, with slow pages (in terms of plot advancement) that don't have that muh substance. This shit would not fly in professional studios because it's their literal job to deliver that shit on a regular basis, but woth webcomics there's an understanding that most of the authors are hobbyists.

So you're in the camp of people who just see it as a means to an end.

Okay. Sure. Whatever. Let me get the banter out of the way before digging in a bit. You're not any different than that "how get seen figure reader" ESL guy earlier. If any of us are/were making it in the industry on that deep of a level, why would we help someone without any drive? Because you have a shit work ethic.
You might think your ideas are hot shit, but EVERYONE has ideas. If you don't want to bring forward some effort, there's no reason to give you a job over someone off the streets.

Now, go reel back the banter a bit (a bit), let's look at pic related.
                Do you see pic related?
Do you see how amateur the art is?
This is from One Punch Man, which, in a short time, blitzed into a cultural phenomenon to the point where the S1 anime finale (because this got adapted into an anime) looked like this: https://youtu.be/ErXfj3sbIfU?si=YHfrHRitRdecsg9b
Because the writing was that strong.

ONE did not let his amateur art be a barrier because he had a story he wanted to tell, and it went places. And now the dude has two wildly successful series under his belt.

Seriously. If you want to start, then fricking START. If you wanbto get better, then, sure, whatever, you can ask, but you have to have made no effort.
We live in a virtual landscape where there is NO excuse not at least make an effort.

No. One Punch Man just had a good story. The story itself is hilarious, and a deconstruction of the superhero genre (and I don't mean the lazy "what if bad thing good" type of criticism associated with that word, more closer to "why didn't the Avengers interfere in (insert MCU film here)" except answered.

Because the main browbeat against his excuses is to showcase that anyone can make it. If we're slowing down, then why not point out that kind of thing, that the bar for entry is a lot lower than a lot of people recognize.

He’s a parody of shounen protagonists.
As he literally says, the key to becoming strong is to trap so hard you lose your hair. Aka-to be the best in the series you need to be the most boring character.
Similarly, every single fight in the series has tons of build up with backstories and motivations, but they’re all useless because in the end the guy with no investment will show up and end it all immediately. It’s taking on the entire concept of the shounen manga genre and it does it excellently.
My problem with it is the original webcomic is better at that than the manga/anime. Yes the art is way worse, but it also doesn’t take itself as seriously while still telling a compelling plot. Meanwhile the manga and anime gets too caught up in waifus and being a generic shounen. The manga/anime literally miss the entire point.

You can't just pick up a new skill on a whim, and certainly not any artistic skill. You have to be a child prodigy, or nobody's going to take you seriously as a creator. If I did pick up a pencil and paper right now, the result would look like absolute garbage, and it'd be a waste of everyone's time.

The first drawing will be garbage. Yes. But it informs the second drawing, which informs the third and so on. You have to fail to figure out what you did wrong and improve.
                Look at

Not my best drawing but I tried some new stuff with this one

This is the right mentality. “Not my best, but I tried new things.”
There are failures in this drawing, but an honest attempt was made with confidence and some interesting results came from it. The next drawing this anon does will be a better one, even if it’s only slightly.
You’re not going to create a masterpiece in your first 500 drawings. It’s a skill and it takes practice and understanding, both are impossible to begin with. Everyone starts at the same level.

The fact that you improve with practice is why the Einstein misquote makes no sense.
He said “to retest expecting different results is just insanity” meaning that if the science is accurate the same result will happen each time and you’d be insane to assume it wouldn’t be the same.
That’s how science works, it only becomes a theory after you can replicate the results over and over.

He did not mean that to apply outside of the very specific context.

Schizo is a slag term used to degrade anyone and everyone who doesn't agree with the poster. (aka nobody can agree on what a schizo is).
Surreal artists get lumped into this category unfairly imo.
Attention prostitute is the proper term for "don't feed the egomaniac who contributes nothing."

yeah thats pretty much what "schizo" means nowadays

Depends on the person and their state of mind. If the user is high on weed and speaking about angels and demons then they're out of touch with baseline reality.
Unfortunately schizo is used as a basic slur by every idiot. It's very annoying when cool surreal artists get degraded for being different from mainstream.

The dude literally thinks that the animation industry plagiarized him because he simps for John K all day. He thinks that AI generators are tailor-made to connect him and specifically him to some kind of superconsciousness. He's obsessed with Andrew Hussie and Homestuck because he thinks it plagiarized him in particular. He thinks autism is a conspiracy from the medical industry to get him down. He loves to proclaim that he's a person of God but you wouldn't know that from hearing his prideful boasts all day. His "comic" is just a text dump of crap he pulls from chatbots while accompanying it by those schizo photoshop-filter messes.

      The dude is a schizo.
I don't mean that in the same sense as a troony calling someone a "schizo" for noticing some "progressive" message in a show, I mean he's a straight-up 100% unironic schizo.
He's not making surrealist work, he's reposting procedurally generated botwork and teasing a nonexistent meaning that isn't there.

If I don't care about my social interactions scientifically, then it snowballs into people spreading around complex lies like this person tries to do

      >the word very much gets thrown around to mean 'anyone who dares think of imagine things outside of the approved norm'

For the record [...] is closer to surrealism.

Anyone got good printing guides for newbies? I can't seem to wrap my head around bleeds and paper sizes, and how to get it to print right. I'm mostly trying to resize a comic I made on the side so I can print it for fun.

      Anonymous

Start by specifying what you mean "printing for fun."
Most printers will just use a standard A4 (because why deviate if the price increase offers nothing else to a printer) and manga, iirc, is around 5"x7".
If you're working digital, then that and DPI might be an issue, but it really doesn't sound that way.

        Anonymous

It is in fact digital, and by printing for fun I mean that I only want to print it out for my own personal enjoyment. I guess to cut to the source of the issue is how exactly do I understand pic-related? It's hard for me to visualize how the page will turn out on paper since I don't exactly understand these lines.
I resized my digital comic to A4, which ends up filling the whole thing past the 'safe zone', and I imagine that's not exactly the correct way to do it. I'm kind of clueless about printing in general.

          Anonymous

I don't know how to answer that because I just leave my printer settings to be able to print to a standard trading card game size with 1 inch margins at a 600 dpi initial scaling.
I'm half joking there. DPI will determine the fidelity of your printer versus amount of pixels, but so-long as you adjust the sizing to emulate the width/height of an A4 sheet, you can get away with mlst sheets of printer paper as long as you fit it appropriately.

The safe area is were the whole comic should be, specially lettering, SFX, etc. It helps you how to size your comic and work under that size.

The trim area is, in case you'll print it, the part where is "trimmed" (duh). If you'll sell books, the printer will use the trim area to cut and then paste the pages, so any detail far of the safe area is going to be cut.

And the bleed area is the whole page of your page.

            If you need a better page, here's one I use - https://www.mediafire.com/file/wn6v5udp41czkb0/doujinshi_size_ruled_paper_600dpi_by_syo_senpai-d7f2nn1.rar/file

Thank you so much, this helps alot! I'll write this down for any future comics I make. Looks like I'll have to increase the safe-zone for my comic based on this information, among a plethora of other things.

Is quite useful, even if you're not going to print your pages. It helps you to understand how big the lettering can be, the sfx and the frames.

How do you guys pace your fight scenes? I'm trying to keep a consistent, yet quick tempo in the fight, and I wanted to hear a second or third opinion.
I'm writing a fight where one character VASTLY outclasses the other in terms of raw strength, however the second person uses their environment and wits to fight back and gain ground in the fight. The fight itself is set in an abandoned school, so I was thinking of every 3 pages or so, switching up the location. Busting into other rooms, using different items in said room and seeing if the idea the hero comes up with works or not. I know it's all in the execution, but does that at least sound like a good idea, or is there a flaw I'm overlooking?

Anyway, to anyone who read my comic, thank you very much. Cheers to your own comic making processes too. And thank you once again to the anon who helped me be able to look at this work again.

                Anonymous

So, is the monster supposed to be an allegory for puberty or aging? It seems like you’re going for a “she didn’t accept herself as she aged and locked herself away and now that special part of her is gone forever” style plot, and it’s not badly thought out.
But I do believe you need to give more for Tulip and Vivian to do.

The base concept of these two hunting down fantasies as pseudo detectives where they see things that don’t exist because the emotions of fragile people manifest as creatures could make for a very compelling comic series. But you need to flesh it out more.
Maybe this girl’s creature was so heavily neglected that it died before it could be reunited with her this causing her eternal emptiness. Whereas with other people Tulip is able to hunt down the fantasy and rescue the person in time.
There needs to be an established importance between the people and their fantasies, both in what the fantasy represents, and how losing it can destroy their mentality.

But all of that said, you’re on to something really great here, you just need to develop it more.

Your art style is also very cute.

The font needs to be cleaned though

thank you so much for the detailed feedback!
                >But I do believe you need to give more for Tulip and Vivian to do.
I really agree with that. I was originally thinking of this comic to be part of a larger anthology featuring different mysteries and stories that the "Fantasy Chasers" come into contact with. It's probably not best for this to be the introduction of Tulip and Vivian. So in any further stories, I'll really think about how I can make them less passive.
                >is the monster supposed to be an allegory for puberty or aging?
thats pretty close. I think its kind of one of those stories that can have a lot of different interpretations, so I really wanted to see how it felt to others, thematically. I also like the approach you're taking with the monsters being metaphors - thats definitely the case in this story. I think in the future I'd like to explore the themes of "attachments" using these fantasy ideas.
                >Your art style is also very cute.
thank you, i was super worried it would be too simple, but it really helped me make it easier. I might stick with it.
                >The font needs to be cleaned though
shoot, i was thinking a handwritten gothic font would be cool and fit the stylized line aesthetic, but maybe it's too much and needs to be replaced with type. Or is it just the placements of the lettering? I'll take a look at it again.

thanks again anon x2 for the review, ill treasure the honest feedback

The font was cool and added to the theme. You are correct about that, if it was also somewhat difficult to read. That could just be a me issue though.

For what it’s worth, the average human lives to about 85. If you’re 30 today you’re still young you just left childhood.

If you go by the saturn return theory, you enter a new life stage after 29 years.
    0-29 is childhood
    29-58 is adulthood
    58-87 is elderhood
Your third saturn return is when you are at your wisest and are gearing Ho for death.
At 30 you’ve just barely become an adult. It’s natural to feel fear and anxiety during this change because it’s a major thing to enter your next stage of life, but you’ve also 30 more years to explore your adulthood and figure yourself out using all the skills and experiences of childhood.

So you never learned to draw as a kid. You’re now a fully developed adult with a brains capable of comprehending concepts you could before. It should theoretically be easier to learn to draw now, and you will progress faster than you would have as a kid if you fully utilize your current capacity.
And let’s say you’re at your second return and you’re now 58. You’ve learned so much and gained so much that now you’ll be able to really grasp these concepts better than ever before with a newfound appreciation for taking things at your own pace.

Age isn’t a handicap, and it shouldn’t be something to fear. It’s never too late to start following your passions, and you’re never too old to learn new skills.

        I suggest you look elsewhere

You say, knowing full well that society at large does not consider any creative endeavor to be a valid contribution to civilization. It's bad enough you're tossing after school special platitudes at me, you don't need to be disingenuous on top of it.

You're never going to be 100% pleased with what you draw (some exceptions). That is the case with everyone, but those of us who draw do it because we find genuine enjoyment in the process of creating (most of the time). It sounds like you are one of those people who thinks there's this "level" of being an artist where you're just perfect. You are othering artists, putting them on a pedestal and assuming that we have some magical thing from birth that you don't. As long as you believe that you can't learn something, it's going to be miserable because of that depressing association. It's a cycle that you're clearly caught in.

        >youre a beginner thats normal
And literally no one on Earth gives a flying rat's ass. Audiences won't tolerate amateur artwork. Ever.

        >i genuinely dont understand what you want,
I want to know how to make a comic without needing to be able to draw. I'd also like you to discover your damn shift key. What the actual frick is that mess.

It sounds like you want success and money, not to be an artist. If you enjoyed drawing you would have been drawing already. Not everyone enjoys drawing all the time, of course, so it sounds like you have to get over this negative association first.
        >"without needing to be able to draw"
The truth is that you can already draw, literally. You just believe it doesn't "count" because "it's not good enough." What you don't realise is that when you make something yourself, you'll always be aware of what you feel you're lacking. So you may see someone else's piece of art as "perfect" but the artist knows where they messed up because they're the one who went through the process of creating it. Like I said earlier in this reply, that's how literally everyone feels and you don't really cure that. It's part of the ride.

before you know it, gaggles of septum piercing and disney tattoo having 18 year olds with dyed hair swarm into your pottery shop asking you to teach them pottery

This isn’t some shitty contest. Just because someone has greater success does not mean someone else can’t enjoy their smaller success. The fact that both managed to put out work at all is worth celebrating.
Their comics aren’t even in the same genre, one does not effect the other in any way.
Instead of shitting on both comics to try and hurt one person, try to make your own stuff or gtfo

I have characters that I personally like together, but I don't write it directly into the story unless their relationship is part of the story.
Unless you're working on a romance story, shipping plots will often bog your story down needlessly unless you don't focus on it too much (which people don't like to do) or it's a different character that's not a part of the main cast, i,e a a coffee shop employee a character has a crush on.
Just let the fans ship stuff themselves. They'll probably do a better job anyways

          Anonymous

You can have the relationship in your story, just make sure you are very, VERY careful how you write it.
The main problem star versus had was the fact that they wanted to have this will they, won't they? bullshit while obviously wanting starco from the beginning. If they just committed, I guarantee you, the problems would be less severe, if not gone entirely. You gotta commit or make the relationship drama complementary to the main story drama

I think romance can be extremely compelling when its more of a sideplot. Even when I read a "romance" series, for me it works when there is another goal in the series and the romance helps develop the characters dealing in that goal. But it might just be that I don't enjoy romance all that much. It doesn't help to me that purely-romance focused series tend to feel in my opinion repetitive, "insists upon itself" kind of thing, or rely on forced drama and stupid character choices to keep the reader interest.

I agree, romance can be a very useful tool in development of characters. I just worry whenever I see it, because writers lose all self-control and turn this sideplot into the main plot and then they act like I NEED to give a shit about this because that's what I came here for right?
It's not Cinemaphile but Saotome Senshu, Hitakakusu is a good example of a romance that also develops characters and gives the characters hopes, dreams, and goals outside of the romance itself while keeping the romance elements fun. I know there's probably a Cinemaphile example but that was the fire one that came to my head

        Anonymous

This is exactly why I think romance should be avoided as much as possible unless it’s vital to the story.

when recounting events with my old DnD group with my own character and another's we did a mutual 'get together' between hers and mine. After a falling out after writing everything down I just simply changed things to 'they split mutually for other endeavors.' Not like she would ever read it but I like to leave irl drama out of what was already established within these stories and make it make sense atleast.

If you must play it, install a mod to reduce the enemy encounter rate. It’s extremely overkill in 5, you can’t walk down a single street without having to fight and Yakuza combat gets boring really quickly

Read stuff about that specific genre/type you wanna delve improve on, practice writing such stories and receive feedback from fellow writers on it. Keep writing and practicing is a good exercise for you. Write short stories, adapt them to comics and let people give you feedback.

      Funny.

What is your guys creative process?

      For brainstorming?
      >watch media I have even a tiniest interest in
      >even if I see the title of the show while looking up roles voice actors have played
      >see if I like the series and out loud describe what I liked or the opposite if I didn't like it.
      >relate my thoughts and feelings to my own work to see if I'm doing something like that and need to change or tweak it.
      >listen to music, specifically soundtracks to shows and games
      >listen over and over, fantasizing about a story I could come up with based on this song and if that story fits any part of my character
      >even see if there's a new element of my character I never thought about that would fit them or add depth.
      For actually creating stuff?
      >write down systems, settings, themes, and characters I want to implement into my story
      >write a basic plot outline for it
      >determine if I have to get rid of or add anything
      >write a detailed script for each chapter
      >draw tiny thumbnail drafts of the chapter's pages
      >since my comics have box paneling, draw boxes and panels
      >make initial sketch
      >inital sketch good? then ink it
      >scan inked pages
      >add halftones and dialouge in photoshop
      >pray to god that no one zooms into my artwork and realize it looks like shit
      >get scared of people thinking it looks bad
      >never post it
      >make new idea discarding all the work done on the old one and repeat
      Overall? Hyper autistic shit.

when i start making a comic, i have to be up really late and thumbnail a whole chapter in one sitting, or else I second guess myself and dont get anywhere. Then I have to commit to those thumbs after blowing them up on my tablet and start on my clean draft, without changes. I'm the type that thinks a lot before the process, not during. People say your first idea is never the best one but its what i have to do to get anything done.

I think I start with a seed, I let it grow with some auxillary ideas in my head and then watch as it sprouts branches and characters of its own. I put it all into a notebook and just work from that. I also have the ending somewhat planned, it's vague but it's there.

Right now, meanwhile, I've got a little strategy to keep grinding little on little whilst I do my chemical engineering. I open up Word in one half of my monitor for the script and ms paint in the other for boarding. if I don't know what to board, I write. if I don't know what to write, I board. It's been quite effective for me, very loose.

I'm writing a story where the MC is a tween girl and I just realized I have no idea what a girl her age would be interested in, any tips on how to approach this?

      Anonymous

Well what kinda girl is she? If shes a normal girl she would be into current boyband (bts, onedirection, n sync) depending on the time period.
Romance as well, tween girls eat it up and are the reason webcomics are dominated by romance.
Its hard to give you more as what you have given is so vague and even as a femoid I cant give you much as I was a outcast and most femanons were as well

Wells she's a bit shy, quiet, have quite low self esteem really. She doesn't really hang out with anyone. Used to do cheerleading when she was younger, but dropped it and mostly play games at home.

I honestly can't blame you for struggling to think of anything. Even music is hard, you mention a couple bands, yet I also heard of teens listening to their parents music, or what ever they find. Thanks for the tips.

When you say picture books you didn’t mean actual picture books yeah? I’m talking full on books with illustrations here
I only ask because it seems as though the expected idea would be a full on comic for readability, I’ve seen little discussion for anything more chunky than that

I have this horror story Im currently developing. My regular comic is a drama but I wanted to expand/adapt a horror story from my hometown about Bunnyman Bridge.

No not actual picture books for children, I mean like occasional illustations wouldn't hurt. It'd probably be more for the novel market than the comic market though. Although now that I think about it, there probably are adults who want picture books

HYW bros, how do I cope with never realizing my dream of being a brain surgeon? I'm exactly 29 years and 355 days old, so it's too late to go to med school. Malpractice lawyers demand perfection, so if you don't start doing surgery as a small child you'll never be good enough. Are there any alternatives I can use to surge a brain for the big bucks without having to uhhhh know things? I wanted to try ice picks but the anti-lobotomy gays on twitter would cancel me.

That’s cool, what is the psychological mystery series about roughly?

My horror series is sort of a southern gothic about Northern Virginia and in particular where Bunnyman Bridge is. Loosely based on some of my own personal experience growing up there.

Still extremely rough so it might not sound interesting or make sense, but the general concept is someone who had mental issues but has been discharged from the psych ward so long as they take pills.
They’re sent to a boarding house or some kind that’s managed by a brainwashing cult and the protagonist is dealing with escaping this commune while not being quite sure what is reality, what is the cult’s influence, and what is their own hallucinations creeping back on them. While there they encounter the only sane person who has also been trying to find a means to escape but can’t because they need help from someone who isn’t already broken. Our protagonists hides their mental problems from this person, which in turn risks compromising all of their plans while the mystery of who can and cannot be trusted and what the end goals of everyone is.

It’s not intended to be an extremely long story, maybe 300 pages maximum, but it would require a lot of planning and careful consideration for the entire mystery to play out correctly and not be extreme cringe

                Anonymous

                Forgot to add:
The leader of the cult is withholding their pills unless they perform tasks favorably, a sort of blackmail to keep loyalty. So if the protagonist doesn’t do what they’re told, they lose the pills and this more sanity. But a big element will be is the cult really all that bad? Is the ally actually an ally? Stuff like that

I like your art but fricking hate your writing

To elaborate: I focused on the art to the exclusion of all else. I carefully considered all criticism, dismissing nothing. I just kind of floundered around on the writing. I listened, but I didn’t unpack what was being said. Beyond that, I had some stupid Ideas about how to put everything together which I had to get over. About a month ago, I started to rethink about the crit I’d received and started to take everything apart. In my own defense: I was PTSD out of my fricking mind during the bulk of the time I was putting all this together.
                End blog.
Again, thanks for taking the time to respond. Harsh, unforgiving critique is the best kind.

Thread challenge. Not optimistic about getting another page out since I'm busy. Did three of these sketches at work. First guy had new art, but pen started to bleed through on the other side of the paper so it was ruined. Bios are rushed.

Hey, I know I should probably lurk more, but I’ve hit a bit of a midlife crisis so I figured I might as well ask.

What are your guy’s track record on team made comics?

I’m getting better at my art, and I have a lot of ideas, but I don’t have the same energy or motivation to keep things straight like I used to, and flagship a whole project on my own. So I figured I’d ask if there are any comic creators on here who want help working on their series, or other guys like me who might wanna band together to make something new.

My discord is #thebadoe, and my alias is 713 on the drawthreads in case anyone was interested in reaching out. If that counts as namegayging then, oh well mods can delete my post.

            no, it was two people

            100% fake friends.

i thought betz getting mad at me for asking to get paid for the work i did and leaking dm's here in the threads while threatening to dox me, was bad, but holy shit those two were worse.

1, telling someone something i didnt say and confusing them into confroting me about it
            2. almost, ALMOST, make it sound like i was hitting on somebody and asking for their nudes when im not interested at all, i just want to draw and hang around other artist, the frick is this shit?

I literally don’t know what you’re talking about but I do think it’s kind of an butthole thing to ask someone if you found their nudes and to accuse them of being an npc just because they were answering/helping someone with something

How is it not uncomfortable to ask someone that stuff? I try to be cool/chill about it but it genuinely makes me uncomfortable to be asked if whoever naked person is me.

I never leaked any DMs so idk what you mean— If someone misunderstood what I was saying after I explained that isn’t what you did (because I did explain that, just said it was still uncomfortable) then I’m sorry but no, that’s not what I said.

Personally, I feel like I’ve been nothing but nice and understanding to you because I know you don’t mean to come off like a jerk but then it felt like you were trying to insult me for no reason after also making me really uncomfortable.

I’m gonna defend him a bit here, he wasn’t trying to get nudes. At all.

Someone edited his comic and there was a naked fat girl in it, so he asked if it was me. It wasn’t.

That’s all it was, it’s not some big thing and he wasn’t trying to flirt or even trying to be weird but it did make me uncomfortable. I joked about it with someone in dms who I’m close with irl because I figured it wasn’t a big deal.

I did bring it up later to everyone as a joke because I didn’t know it would be an issue and I figured since I explained it no one would take it the wrong way but obviously they did.
