Second time: I cannot "get" the second half because the POV is that of trained soldiers, unlike the boot camp half where they are still relatable youths.
Third time: The two parts seem radically disparate but this is in fact a causal necessity. The boot camp serves to remove their humanity. In the second part we thus get an inhuman POV. The characters discover remnants of that humanity only when they are about to lose them, which then they unmistakably do. It is the darkest of all Vietnam movies; there is no redemption. Paint it black.
