stupid question, how do you keep your home from molding? you're living inside of a fridge, there must be a lot of moisture on your walls

        Anonymous

humidity control. You only need to start worrying about moisture and mold if the indoor humidity is above 60%. Most probably functioning ACs can keep even poorly insulated houses 55% or below, with 40-45% being the general goal/ideal

        Anonymous

the air conditioner draws moisture out of the air. running your AC will dehumidify the air in your house
        >refrigerant gets condensed in the outside unit
        >pumped to the evaporator coil where it evaporates (cooling down a lot due to volume being held constant)
        >air is blown past the evaporator coil
        >evap coil absorbs heat from air
        >temp difference causes moisture in air to condensate
        >condensate falls into drain pan and then into drain
        >refrigerant that just absorbed heat from the air in your house now goes back to the condenser coil where it dissipates to the outside air

also Euros dont understand how fricking hot it gets in parts of America. There is a reason once AC was invented that it ended up being put everywhere. Until, AC it was very common for people to sleep outside on their front porch because it was too fricking hot inside to sleep.

we had a 45°C summer a couple of years ago and I did fine. all you need to do is tape saftey blankets to the windows and doors. in the morning you rip everything open up until 08:30 and then you only open up again at around 22:00 in the evening. it's not that hard

because everyone using AC in the summer drastically increases energy usage. Which means more fossil fuels being burned. It's not the units themselves.

I grew up in Indiana when it would get over 100f in the summer and we didn't have AC. It fricking sucked.

When I moved to florida though I got hit by a new kind of heat that I've never felt before. Stepping out of the airport in the middle of august was like walking into a boiling humidity wall. I didn't know it could get that hot. Luckily everything in florida is air conditioned so you go from your AC car to a AC school room or store or whatever. You just have to survive the walk of heat death in between though.

Frick not having AC. Its the greatest invention of the 20th century.

            Anonymous

There is no such thing as a boiling point or a freezing point. These are multivariable functions. You have to choose an arbitrary chemical, an arbitrary pressure, and assign 0 and 100 as your ends arbitrarily.
That's also not how celsius is defined, you fricking moron. It's defined by setting Boltzmann's constant to 1.380649 × 10-23 J/K and then displacing from Kelvin by 273.15 numerical units. How logical! Prior to that is was defined by setting the triple point of water at an arbitrary pressure to 0.01 degrees C, how logical!

Fahrenheit was designed for humans. I like to think of a a degree as a percentage of how hot it is: 98°F == it’s 98% hot out, 20°F == it’s 20% hot out.

            > celsius

Is too coarse of a measurement and so doesn't really give humans (the ones actually using the measurement) a good sense of the actual feel of the temperature. Furthermore, it's never boiling outside and rarely freezing which skews the scale to the lower end and makes it pretty much useless (like metrics all around).

Growing up, our house didn't have AC but we did have a whole house attic vent fan.

In the evening/night when it's cool, you open up different windows in the house while running the fan and it cools everything down and furthermore, it cools down the attic so the house doesn't heat up as fast in the day.
