-1 was near-remake of original 1957 Godzilla with several direct copy scenes like the train chomp, as well as soundtrack. Hence the soul. Original Godzilla still beats everything after it except this one because this improved it.
the themes of -1 are new and very soulful (find something worth dying AND living for, rely on yourself and your community over government, etc.)
also the ship scenes and the shinden fighter all elevate -1 to something new and improved

minus one is a fantastic film with incredible effects and great dramatic acting, wonderful sympathetic characters that you want to see win, a fully sincere and gripping story, amazing direction with beautiful cinematography and action scenes, is going to be remembered as a timeless classic not unlike the original, has amazing creature design, and is the best Godzilla film. right after Shin Godzilla, Godzilla just cannot stop winning and you absolutely love to see those who only saw Godzilla as a silly franchise not to be taken seriously with silly haha monsters punching each other get utterly BTFO by undiluted CINEMA by those who understood its potential.
If a sequel that involves kaiju battling is even close to being as good, Godzilla wins
