They did a poor job of showing that. The bat seemed to be following them into the room, and they continued to do so even when they barricaded themselves inside. I don't know what would happen if the bats came through. Would they fly into their world? Why not fight them where there's a chokepoint where they could easily kill any bats that fly through?

they just finally realized that they couldn't just do more hungry monsters and needed a villain with speech, an ostensible motive and some kind of connection to Eleven and reused Joyce's arc using Max instead as a way of connecting it to the other semi-well-fleshed out character played by an actor with range.

The writing in this show is awful

they went from ripping off Goonies/ET with light hearted family film tone towards a more grounded tone in season two which was aweful and then went back to good fun popcorn mode in s3 but went utterly bonkers with that (Hopper being a John McClane type figure that mowes down dozens of henchman no problem)
S3 was the best one so far precisely because it nailed the over-the-top fun 80s action movie tone. When they try to do "horror" or feels drama it just falls flat for me. But I guess it hits with pre-teens, which is their main target audience, so it's all good.
Eddie should've lived and Jonathan should've died. Also please find something remotely interesting for Winona to do in S5, she's been sleepwalking through the show for 3 seasons now.
