I kinda enjoy his movies. They’re bleak and “realistic” but with metaphysical quirks. Is there a word for lit with these strange tweaks to physics?

It could be called magical realism, tho you have to stretch the definition a bit to include Sacred Deer here

      This.

      Pretentious

      And this.

I don't even remember much of the movie, just that it irritated me how insultingly pretentious it was. Self parody levels, but no signs of any self awareness.

      I did not get it.

it's a deconstruction of revenge plot and revenge as a concept.
the writer is dramatizing how he thinks the idea of revenge is silly and makes no sense, by telling a story where the crime and the revenge for it are both mysterious and arbitrary.
the key scene is where the kid bites Colin's arm, then bites his own arm and say "there doesn't that make you feel better".

    Why was Martin always eating?
I mean the spaghetti scene is a little more straightforward. But he's stuffing his face, loudly, messily through the whole film.

      >clear case of mediocre obscurist/absurdist storytelling
      >fails to leave any lasting impression or communicate anything remarkable
      >devoid of any soul or passion, filmed almost mechanically
      >made deliberately "boring" to evoke some pseudo intellectual air of complexity or maturity
Yeah. Pretentious. Funny how words mean things.

Its not trying to be complex or mature. The monotone delivery to me gave the movie a comedic quality and the premise is the opposite of pretentious or complex, its a childish idea delivered straight which is the point. Its just an affluent emotionally unintelligent bored family dealing with a crazy and random sophie's choice scenario that is never explained. Its just fun, it doesn't have to be saying anything. It made an impression on me because I haven't seen a movie like it before.

          >It made an impression on me because I haven't seen a movie like it before.
Then at the very least I think it's fair to call it amateurish. The premise has been done much better without sacrificing all those things that make a movie engaging and visually appealing. I'm glad you enjoyed it and all, but it's really bad in capturing both wide and niche appeal (too niche for the former, too moronic for the latter).

Kind of like your comment then?

        case of mediocre storytelling
to leave any lasting impression or communicate anything remarkable
of any soul or passion, typed almost mechanically
        >>made deliberately "boring" to evoke some pseudo intellectual air of complexity or maturity

        >modern work is an indirect interpretation of older thing (insert bible/Faust/Dante/plays/poems/etc etc)
        >therefore it is smart and good
        when will this meme end

I will need to write a essay to explain the themes and complexities of the film. This I will not do. But I can recommend a video-essay on the subject: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OuUFUgqLRRo

        >modern work is an indirect interpretation of older thing (insert bible/Faust/Dante/plays/poems/etc etc)
        >therefore it is smart and good
        when will this meme end

I never said: "therefore it's good". I just gave some needed nuance. I don't actually think the film is very smart, or especially great, merely good.

And here's the thing: I don't "get" expensive wine or classical music. But that doesn't make them bad. It makes me uninformed on those subjects. And you all are clearly uniformed when it comes to Lanthimos films. That's fine. Just don't be so childish about it.

Now, let’s follow Patrick’s line of thinking to make sense of it. He doesn’t know what an instrument is. So he’s not asking if mayonnaise fits into the category or being an instrument. He’s testing out his understanding of the word instrument to see if he has it right. Mayonnaise is a sauce, not a food. Instruments make music. Mayonnaise makes food better; instruments make sound better. It’s likely he reasoned mayonnaise could be an instrument since he’s unfamiliar with concepts like condiments, instruments and so on. He used something he knew, and correlated it to the idea of an instrument. That’s why his question is actually really funny and brilliantly written. I still laugh when I think about it

It's a modern version of Iphigenia in Aulis. It's the trolley problem. A surreal moral dilemma. It's clearly a good film and you are all dimwits

What’s funny is that there is almost nothing really “surreal” to Classical Greek drama other than maybe Euripides’ Bacchae. I hate how pretentious morons can only adapt the classics via nonsensical allegories.

If you kill a sacred deer, you're going to get a plague upon you and your house. Colin being a drunk failed to perform well during a heart surgery for homosexual Irish guy's dad, and so gayrish puts a curse on Colin and his family. We're supposed to think that it's just bad luck, karma, or maybe magic curses are real! The movie ends with gayrish getting his "life for a life" revenge. Think it ended like shit though. Would've been better if gayrish was seen dropping dead, as he would've exchanged his "soul/life" for the ability to inflict a curse.

It’s a modern interpretation of Iphigenia, daughter of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra.

Agamemnon is commander of the Greek fleet assembled to attack Troy when he goes hunting in the forest and kills a sacred stag of the goddess Artemis. She stops the winds from blowing unless he sacrifices his eldest daughter at Aulis.
