Because the movie needed you to believe that your density is pre-determined. But unlike Butterfly Effect or Groundhog Day, it does a terrible job establishing this premise. They could have shown him try to do different things a few times before realizing it always ends badly, but it just shows one playthrough. Realistically he could have avoided the situation where his sister gets killed and seen what happens after, but we never get that, he just decides to die after it goes wrong once.
