I don’t get it.

Why don’t they just pretend they aren’t Christian?

It didn't have a terrible message. Rodrigues realized he was prideful but never lost his faith. Black Robe is a similar movie but with the opposite decision. That guy's a moron. He probably thought

that after completely botching a rudimentary translation of the bible, jesuits started trying to convince local lords to convert their subjects to christianity, so they could trade for guns. then when their civil war ended, the winners correctly identified christianity as foreign subversion and a death cult, and sought to rid japan of its influence.

Okay even if they wanted to betray their faith, they would be two white guys in feudal Japan. Why else would they be there?

I’m a Christian and I hate this movie. Scorsese is such a poser. Great filmmaker but absolute hack on religion and politics.

It’s supposed to be a meditation on suffering and faith in the face of temptation but it’s just so one note and boring. We learn little of the mens character before they’re thrown into the fire so we never really care about them as people. It’s like making a movie on bureaucrats and expecting the audience to care. I don’t think the religious would like it nor would non believers get anything out of it. Passion of the Christ is sadomasochistic but at least the end is redemptive and you could argue justifies what it puts the audience through. But this? Nah. And that’s not to mention it has moments of blasphemy so to pretend Scorsese is sincere is a stretch because we’ve all seen The Last Temptation. You can make a religious movie that is evenhanded and not propaganda and still manages to be interesting but I’ve yet to really see it. Probably because those types become preachers and not filmmakers. Also the title card is literally the worst thing I’ve ever seen in any movie.

          >Passion of the Christ is sadomasochistic
Are you a Christian? Meditating on the passion is what Christians do. Don't confuse it with sickness/paraphilia.

Christ did not endure the cross to become some circus freak to be gawked at, he died for the forgiveness of sins and the opportunity for men to be reconciled before God. I do not care for self flagellation as the preceding word would imply, is about the self more than anything else, such is the domain of charlatans and Pharisees. Nor do I care about mistranslations of the word repentance. In other words, I am not a Catholic, unlike Gibson.

You know this movie is a verbatim adaptation of the book you fricking mong, scorsese did not write this shit

He’s the director, he makes the choices of what to shoot and what to emphasize. He also defended The Last Temptation, both the book and film, as not blasphemous when it clearly was and did this little dance saying “oh it’s okay because I’m catholic”. He’s full of shit. And this movie has been in the works since the 80s so blasphemy or not, he makes shit choices for which projects to do.

He chose to emphasize the idea of two well meaning jesuits being thrown into a diplomatic/political clusterfrick of the church’s making with no knowledge or understanding of how it happened, why, or how much the natives know about them.

true. Like Bishop Barron says, it glorifies apostasy because Scorsese is a despairing boomer.

should've made a movie about the actual martyrs who were willing to lay down their lives for Christ or the Japanese Christians who adhered to the faith in secrecy for centuries

now there's an actual story, not this maudlin tripe

but hollywood would never allow something like that to see the light. I wonder why

How many people here actually read the novel (which was written by a Japanese Christian) or watched the first adaption from the 70s, that was faithful to it?
Scorsese completely changed the ending, the Jesuit did lose his faith in the original and forsake God.

Okay to be entirely fair, the 70s version is incredibly boring has the final is ruined because they cast Japanese man as a European and had him poorly speech English phonetically.
