I don't get it. What the frick was the point of turning into a snake? He's seen again like two scenes later as a human again. Was there more to this scene that was cancelled or edited out?

cause hes evil
Wait, Thulusa was the giant snake? I've seen Conan a few times but maybe I've memoryholed it.
No, there are two snakes. Thulsa just turns into a giant snake to go in a hole.
Snake ecstasy
he's a wizard
It’s a fantasy movie with magic and shit and he’s the leader of a snake cult. You figure it out.
now we can divau gadz tugeza
Just listen to the kino score and stfu
This. It’s a fantasy movie, it ain’t gotta explain shit.
What if Thulsa Doom had been a girl?
a white girl
What if Thulsa Doom was a junkie white goil?
>white
that's a israelite anon
>What is a dick without a soft hand that wields it?
James Earl Jones was the best part of the movie
NO!
Thulsa Womb
there would be a mountain of porn from the 80's until today.
I can't think of anyone else?
He’s evil, snakes are evil, so he likes snakes.
I thought it meant he was really a snake not a human
He's not really either, he's part of the species that ruled the world in the age before Man
Bitches love when you turn into a snake
why does Cinemaphile give a pass to certain race swapped characters?
Conan is kino and very well made in every aspect. People don’t care about character’s race when the movies are actually good.
you wouldn’t say that if you realize how long the psyop has been going on
No ivan, there isn't a conspiracy
No ivan, I don't want to hear your explanations
This ivan posting is really just all from one weirdo isn't it?
>yOu WoUlDnT sAy ThAt If YoU kNeW hOw LoNg ThE pSyOp GoNe On
Buffoon
Only holds water if Jones wasn't talented.
Quality has a quality all its own
what part of a white ubermench beheading a black leader of hippies dont you understand?
The issue is the creator's gay politics being detrimental to the art
There's no gay politics here, so there's no detriment
Howard was a neet homosexual feminist. Now tell me about the heckin awesome female warrior in the movie!
JEJ is kickass
James Earl Jones isn’t the Black personish in the slightest
They gave him blue eyes and straight hair
The world of Conan has multiple peoples
mental gymnastics
If same casting was made today you would sneer at it, roll your eyes and ring the bell.
You're the one performing mental gymnastics homosexual. Go look at Twitter or something you wiener sucker.
No, if it was made today, Thulsa Doom would look into the camera and say "I may be evil, but we all know the real evil is racism, transphobia and nuclear energy"
nowhere in conan the barbarian did tulsa doom talk about le heckin oppressed Black folk or parrot the current year dnc talking points
>They gave him blue eyes and straight hair
James Earl Jones has blue eyes you dumb Black person
Exactly. Jones is playing another race that also just happens to have dark skin. He's not just a black person dumped into a fantasy world.
Because it's a good actor/casting. Same with MCD as Kingpin. We have a problem with them basically being REQUIRED to be cast now.
they catesed a black guy and then gave him blue eyes and stright hair to vuisually communicate he's part of an ancient race that didn't exist anymore.
And JEJ has poise, charisma and he looks strong.
I have no problems with blacks being cast as villains.
If they made Conan today they would cast a black woman as the main character and JK Simmons would be Thulsa Doom.
He's literally supposed to look out of place in the movie's world
Original Thulsa Doom was:
a. more a Kull character than Conan.
b. Atlantean so could be anything cf. disney's Atlanteans.
c. has a fricking skull for a face.
Movie Thulsa Doom is essentially a mashup of Thusla Doom and Conan villain Thoth-Amon, who was Stygian.
>c. has a fricking skull for a face.
This is skeleton erasure. Billions must die (and rise as skeletons.)
>why does Cinemaphile give a pass to certain race swapped characters?
Casting a black man to play Thulsa didn't require the writers to rewrite the script to ensure that Thulsa was always morally correct and wins at the end.
James Earl Jones is white.
He isn't but I was really surprised to see what his son looks like
BLEACHED family
Yes he is.
Contemplate this on the tree of woe.
Weird ageless traveling wizard who is a foreigner in a land where many distinct cultures are represented.
It's obnoxious when diversity casting requires the viewer to forget that race carries implications of culture and lineage. In fact, it is ironically more evil to be so blindly inclusive and strip races of their meanings and stories.
I completely agree.
Same thing with casting women as successful fighters and warriors. It erases the identity of actual women.
It's almost as though most of these social justice platforms are built upon lies and are offensive thereby.
Ah yes, who doesn't remember Conan the Barbarian's arch nemesis, the pale lich-y Thulsa Doom, most famous villain to ever appear in the Conan the Barbarian stories?
Conan isn't set in Europe, for one thing.
Howard was into all of that ancient Aryanism stuff.
Diggin it.
What goes on here?
crime
Demons.
horse theft and drive by arrowing
Depends on the people. Either decently prosperous cities with not-so-evil gods, or cannibalistic tribals that worship evil cannibal gods.
The Kushites are pretty decently advanced, but they live next to Stygia.
They’re a bit like African Gondor in that regard.
>IRANISTAN
Bravo, Howard.
I remember like half the Conan stories mentioning hook nosed Shemite archers with curly locks.
>I remember like half the Conan stories mentioning hook nosed Shemite archers with curly locks.
Yes, they also talked how it is natural for races to wane out of existence and be replaced by barbaric ones who eventually get civilized and then replaced.
So it’s the real world map smashed together. Honestly seeing how pole reversals are real and continents can smash into each other in a single day as opposed to the fake gay current science. I believe the author had some secret knowledge of sorts. Maybe soft disclosure in fun format.
Thulsa doom in the Film is basically a new character, Doom not even a conan villain he's. a King Kull(an older REH character) one so accuracy to the source material was not the main objectives of the creators of the film
Conan takes place all over the world, he even goes to asia in the beginning as a gladiator.
>they bleached conan!
Finally someone said it.
Thulsa was a Kull character who was in one (1) story.
He was also a skellington
Old thing good, new thing bad
I like the part where he turns a snake into an arrow.
Why do you need a fricking explanation to everything?
Yet here you are asking for an explanation.
He’s one of the Serpent Men who ruled Earth before humans(and a few gods) brought them low.
Are the Conan movies worth checking out? I do love me some Arnie kino, I'm surprised I haven't seen them yet. Fantasy isn't really my bag.
Only the first one.
The first one is legitimately good. Compelling characters, interesting villain, 11/10 score, great sets and costumes, and a story with real pathos and energy to it.
The second one is a saturday morning cartoon which is grossly inferior to the original but more of a mixed bag than a total letdown. Lots of bad acting, edited down to the bare bones, gimped by a PG rating and featuring some occasionally iffy makeup and effects work, but it's still got that 80's fantasy soul to it and there's some good bits in amongst the chaff.
Conan 1 is an actual film, 2 is just a movie if that makes sense
Frick yes they are, the first infinitely more so than the second, although the second one’s still a lot of fun. Got a real qt in it, too.
Urssa seducing Olivia DeAbo's character and them having passionate sex is all think about when I watch this kino.
Yuuuup.
The first movie is a classic, it didn't age that much either thanks to having very little dialogue and great nature shots and music.
If anything you regret they didn't make a trilogy of this quality.
1 yes, 2 no. Red Sonja isn't Conan but is also decent Arnie swords and sorcery. Better than Destroyer but not as good as Barbarian.
1 is kino. It's way deeper than people give it credit for (and probably than it was intended); approach it as an opera where picture+music form a unit.
2 belongs to the "4 homies in a row" genre. It's enjoyable with a few beers and buddies and I really liked the final boss, but it's not special enough that it would warrant rewatches.
He turns into a snek and sneks away so Conan and co don't find him during their attack
Saw this not too long ago and while the action was pretty rough and dated, it was still pure kino
watching real shit filmed in natural light is rare in big budget movies these days.
Man JEJ is fricking great in everything. You guys should watch "By the Dawns Early Light" its pure cold war gone hot kino with him in a big role
Elevates everything he touches. Not even The Hunt for Red October works as well without him.
they released a 3 minute movie back then? truly ahead of its time
This is one of the greatest films I've ever saw
Wouldn't you turn into a snake if you could switch back and forth like him? I definitely would.
Being a troony isn’t funny or cute. have a nice day
I'm not talking about being a freak who chops their wiener off. I'm talking about using your sweet wizard powers to turn into apex predators at will.
Dude it really can’t be healthy to think about trannies this much
I’m snek right now.
Laff
Holy shit.
Heh
nice one, anon, very funny
What makes Thulsa Doom great as a character is that he is mysterious.
Why did he turn into a snake before Conan attacked? Maybe he sensed danger (the hole is effectively too tiny for Conan to chase him), maybe he needed it to accomplish a ritual, maybe that's what allows him to live for centuries, etc...
Conan a "show, don't tell" movie, dialogues are cut to their minimum and it lets the viewers imagination fill the blanks.
congrats on going to film school this fall
I already went through med school instead but glad you appreciated my insight so much anon, thanks (^^)b
big dude killing a snake?
this never happened before
So you're telling me you wouldn't turn into a snake at your ritual cannibalism orgies? What are you, twelve?
It was to familiarize the audience on the topic of reptilian shapeshifters.
Is there a definitive answer as to why red hair man releases conan?
It dawned on him that he was claiming ownership over a King, and only a fool would knowingly attempt that. The revelation strikes him after Conan answers the question of what is best in life.
>to crush your enemy, to see them driven before you and to hear the lamentation of his women
that doesn't sound very good to me, but what do i know, im not a psycho
That's Conan saying what his masters want to hear, not what he actually believes. His real answer would probably be more like the other guy who talks about freedom, the wind in your hair, etc. Maybe red hair guy realises this and decides it's best to allow Conan to realise his full potential
>It has been surmised, that perhaps, my lord had become like a wild animal that had been kept too long
I believe the red haired man released Conan because he was afraid it was just a matter of time before Conan killed him anyway
I can get behind this.
And it may not even be because of fear of death. There are many reasons to release a wild animal. Perhaps he felt guilty and wanted to see Conan flourish in the wild?
I don't recall exactly but wasn't he like black out drunk at the time? maybe he was feeling overly sentimental
I go with Subotai's explanation about how Conan was like a wild animal that had been held in a cage for too long.
Conan started as a slave, but eventually became a son. Red hair educated him, housed him, got him laid, and in turn Conan brought his clan fortune and clout. It was simply a matter of honor, Conan had grown too great to keep in chains.
Conan proves that diversity does work and doesn’t feel out of place IF the setting supports it. Cimmerians all being white made sense. Conan traveling to some southern city with camels and shit and it looking like New York subway made sense. I think a problem with a lot of modern fantasy movies is that the black people they cast almost all have I “instagram face” and don’t look like people who come from a hardy nation that gets a lot of sun.
Shows the strength of his bond with the serpent god.
He's an ancient Atlanean (or older) being that takes on disguises.
I TURNED MYSELF INTO A SNAKE MORTY
>What the frick was the point of turning into a snake?
Wouldn't you, if you could?
>What the frick was the point of turning into a snake?
Because it's fricking cool maybe pic related is more your speed.
I just saw the episode of House where James Earl Jones plays the genocidal tyrant. He was the highlight of the entire episode.
They were supposed to do 2 additionnal movies, where the themes could have been explored more in depth. My own take is that he indulged in many weird shits in his quest for power. My reason to believe so is that he said it and he doesn't strike me as a dishonest person: "... steel meant more to me than gold and israeliteels." He wasn't satisfied with steel, with having a gang nor with his mesmerizing power, hence he continued to pursue both the dark arts and establishing a kingdom of sort but there's no limit to his snekish appetite. That's what makes him a mirror to Conan's father, he's Civilization incarnated in its most degenerate state, the snek stuff just shows that he isn't even human anymore. Conan rejects it but you can see him pondering on the stairs - we'll never have the next movies so we are left with the duty to guess what could come next after steel and flesh. Maybe new values for a humanity free of superstition, driven by Will - Conan helps the princess to stand up at the end. It sounds a little edgy but the movie began with a quote from Nietzche.
> tldr; Thulsa Doom is Skeletor
When I listen to Battle of the Mounds, I get an overwhelming urge to shove a spear into a charging horse.
I wish sword and sorcery were real.
For me it's Orphans of Doom/The Awakening
With how it starts all melancholic and sad, just to literally rise together with the sun and end in a triumphant finale with bells.
The cynical answer is that they wanted a special effect shot for the trailer. Bam he turns into a snake. we got a clip.
Well when you cast a man that can turn into a snake you'd be moronic to not put it in the film.
Same thing in Field of Dreams. There was no reason for James Earl Jones's character to transform into a snake and frick the daughter but it happened. You just don't waste that type of talent.
He was a reptilian
oh i should have known to check the early life section
I remember reading somewhere the original ending was going to be him turning into a giant snake and fighting Conan, but they had ran out of budget.
Imagine not turning into a snake
