The Disney+ filler purge maneuver.
>The Disney+ filler purge maneuver.
What's that?
When they did the same thing last year to save money on royalties. Just a bunch of originals junk they produced to advertise gorillions of hours of stuff to watch knowing subscribers will only watch Marvel.
Its crap that no one is watching. They're clearing some space on their hd.
This. It's a bunch of shit that costs a ton in royalties etc and likely creates a huge legal headache to keep offering and in some cases has a niche fanbase that creates a disproportionate amount of buzz but doesn't actually pay to watch the content. Despite how people are going to seethe on social media about it being dropped, doing his probably has next to no impact on their subscriptions and will substantially reduce their overhead. Lots of production companies in TV, movies and gaming need to learn from this kind of move and stop trusting buzz as a remotely accurate indicator of actual customer interest.
>has a niche fanbase that creates a disproportionate amount of buzz
I haven't heard of half the list in well over a year, and the other half I've NEVER heard of. Literally no one would have even noticed this shit was gone if they didn't announce it.
>to save money on royalties
>shit that costs a ton in royalties
that's not how that works you fricking morons, first off it's residuals, royalties are only paid off of music and books directly to the creators, second they would only be paying royalties based on how many people are watching it, so it would only cost a lot in royalties if they were popular. also most of these are animated which do not have the same residual requirements as live action since most animated projects are not covered by the guilds, finally these were all made before thte last strike in which the standard practice was to give absolutely abysmal residual agreements (sometimes none at all) in exchange for paying more up front. its more likely that they are getting ready to license this content to another service
why don't people on a board dedicated to television and film know anything about television and film are made? its truly mind boggling
why would they license their own original programs to other services though?
anon, there are people on here who don't even understand the difference between directing for TV vs directing for films. or box office gross vs film revenue.
>akshually
stopped reading there
it's probably because they are being watched in other countries with a shitty currency, they are valuable in brand, so you sell the brand basically and you in fact stop losing money
>Its crap that no one is watching.
why dont they stop nu-trek then
The original Are You Afraid of The Dark was certified kino, same as original Goosebumps
Exactly. I was worried for a sec, but these arent' that.
For me it’s Figure It Out
Between this, the mass layoffs, and Quiet On Set, Nick and Paramount and done for.
Paramount still has its secret weapon bar rescue.
I'm both curious to know who is watching this show to keep it going, and have no desire to actually meet them.
How long until we see the entire streaming industry collapse? Normies have woken up to the grift already so it's only a matter of time.
I have to disagree on the normies grift comment. I know too many that are just slaves to their smart TVs and can't be bothered with anything mildly techy to watch ALL THE HORRIBLE CONTENT they just have to watch.
It's fricking embarrassing.
Why haven't normalgays figured out that you can just torrent everything you want and it's there forever free of charge? The only expense is the drive and the internet connection.
Think about it like this, as long as normalgays don't torrent, it makes it safer for the rest of us to torrent. If every normalgay started torrenting, then the bigshots in Hollywood and the government would lose their shit and start taking heads
They unironically would rather spend $100+/mo on streaming subs than use torrents. I have two friends who I've sent private tracker invites to who refuse to use them because they "have a job lol I can afford some subscriptions." They've both been subbed to youtube red for years
That's just their excuse to cover up for the fact that they're afraid to torrent, either because they don't know how to set it up, or they're afraid of getting sued for copyright infringement. And when you tell them to get a VPN, they get even more scared and just disregard the idea completely
>youtube red
literally only one original content release per year on that platform why even bother
No ads. I sent them all the apks and instructions to get vanced running years back and revanced when vanced got shut down. They would rather just pay for subs.
>torrenting with a vpn
lol. They spend a fortune on vpn subs for god knows what as well. It's not like they're doing anything that would warrant running one, and even if they were it's not like 99.9% of vpn providers wouldn't roll over the second some fed showed up on their doorstep asking for logs/access. I'm pretty sure they somehow get sexual satisfaction from knowing they're subscribed to services that have recurring charges. I can't explain their behavior otherwise.
YouTube Red is one of the few services that makes sense to subscribe to. YouTube provides a unique service and your sub directly increases the profits of independent creators you watch. That, Criterion, and Mubi are the only worthwhile subs I have imo.
I really don’t like supporting any aspect of soulless corporate era YouTube
I don't like the algo changes but I also think this frame of thinking is dumb. The corporate can't be soulful or soulless in media at any scale beyond something super indie. The corporation is essentially acting in accordance with the energy of the market. You can think of it as magic or alchemy. The result is whatever you see. When the film industry crashed in Japan you stopped seeing major pictures because most of the big studios switched to TV. Good films didn't stop, they moved to a different forum, in that case DVD. You don't have the same level of consistent quality and interesting culture on YouTube now but there are still many great creators, its just that YouTube doesn't necessarily direct you towards them.
>your sub directly increases the profits of independent creators you watch
I'm not going to support a slushfund that kicks a cent a month to people who deserve it when most of it is going to morons who don't and have videos chock full of ad reads for dogshit like better help or maglev pens or shit vpn services that they're getting paid out the fricking ass for. I'm just going to run sponsorblock.
If you only knew what ad reads are worth on these videos.
Fair I just think if I use a service a lot I don't mind paying for it. Very diff from tv and films made after the year 2000 where no one involved generally deserves any money.
>i dont get it why paramount get rid of these
maybe because they are shit? i mean, why the frick would you want to see that crap?
Apparently this is a devastating blow to popular culture, or something.
Paramount+ pulls the series and sells or licenses the episodes they can, writes down what remains on the shelf. That's just business.
>devastating blow
its all shit series theres no renowned next gen spongebob something like that
I hope Rugrats 2021 gets memory holed
God, don’t remind me.
What made it bad, I didnt even know it existed until just now
offensively grotesque art style
Not to mention, being generally devoid of sovl
Made the twins mom be a lesbian and completely wrote out the husband. Can't show a normal nuclear family, that's too far.
The first season of Are You Afraid of the Dark? (2019) with Lyliana Wray was surprisingly good. I never watched the second but the third season had a bunch of LGBT stuff with kids (unsurprisingly) inserted into it.
Was Are You Afraid of the Dark? (2019) any good?
it was mid
No. It was no longer an anthology series.
Not muh heckin Ryan
recently there was an interview of max's streaming head on the recent launch of max in europe and he said that the industry forecast is only 3-5 streaming services by 2027 which would remain constant for some time and the churn would settle, based on that what does Cinemaphile think?
i would prime video is one of those services because its main money is through other services plus they also have mgm with them and have started producing content en masse
dont know about the other 2, maybe max as one based on their library strength and netflix on their sub base?
peawiener+, paramount+ should fold, they have limited value,
disney+ is hard to point as despite its weak shows, it has a strong fanbase,
starz can be a surprising pick as can apple tv
also to add, sony has played this one differently than all the rest, and short term, their way has been successful as a content arms dealer, earning money through licensing ip and acquired ip like the crunchyroll library
Idk why but i had feeling that paramount and disney gonna merge sooner or later
paramount has been quoted for by several studios, chief among which are legendary and skydance, i think it would be more sensible for these studios to buy out paramount owing to its distribution channels, which legendary had to go through wbd to accomplish before and now will go through sony
i would say that this is one move that internet streamers such as netflix and apple tv should invest on, though with netflix, it will be a bloodbath or amazon mgm can buy it out if it has strong industry ambitions
That Girl do what now?
Now that they have to pay royalties there’s no reason to keep everything. The dream of streaming having everything is over.
they have to pay royalties to the people who make the shows due to union rules, so it's cheaper to pull stuff that nobody is watching
also seems like they went in on children's programming only to realize that star trek fans are all childless millennials
I genuinely wonder what kids even watch on tv or streaming anymore. Nick and MTV were huge and nobody fills that gaps but youtubers. I think kids watch Euphoria but thats it.
>Rugrats (2021)
Never even heard of it. And there were two season apparently?
They're getting rid of all the trash made by DEI hires and troons because it's become poison to their brand.
