She's Hathaway's conscience. She points out uncomfortable facts about himself to him, causing him to start doubting his Mafty persona.
Eventually he rejects her pull and as he boards the Xi Gundam, he renounces the identity of Hathaway Noa.
She's basically personification of hesitating before you drink the kool-aid of your chosen political ideology.

She's a newtype quirky b***h, she reads the mind of hathaway so she knows he's mafty and that he's conflicted about waging war on feddies at the expense of normal people getting caught on the crossfire, don't know if she has a valid reason to stick around him appart from being a dumb b***h getting the hots over terrorists, but this is a good narrative reason to explain her character.

I wish this movie did a better job of explaining things because I think you're right but I never would have figured it out myself.

I want to love Hathaway but it is so fricking vague and open to interpretation. And it barely even touches on mafty's ideology.

I can understand not getting the characters since they're meant to be left for the audience to parse, but the movie is incredibly straightforward in digging through Mafty's motives and ideology. Hal the movie is characters discussing his actions and goals and the other is actively depicting how shit the life on Earth is, the inequality and police terror in the Federation, etc.

        >And it barely even touches on mafty's ideology.
Mafty's ideology is basically a mash-up of Neo Zeon and the AUEG, which is the EF is insanely conrrupt and destroying the planet. As

pointed out, Gigi is there to give Hathaway some internal conflict as he realizes that he'll have to become like his predecessors such as Char, Scirocco, Hymen, Karn, the Zabis et al to achieve his goal, which means killing on a mass scale.

Then how do you explain Gigi sexually pleasing all those older men? Was that Hathaway in drag, then?

Gigi lives with the guilt and shame of her circumstances, she puts up a front of self-assured confidence, but we also see how flustered and uncomfortable she is about how she makes her living around people whose opinion she cares about. She pokes cracks in Hathaway's armor, just like Hathaway pokes in her's in turn, because as she challenges him she genuinely finds the romantic ideal of Mafty, the danger surrounding him alluring, even if she can't comprehend the real consequences (which is why the terrorist attack is a reality check for her that ends with her running in Kenneth's arms). But then the movie/first book with her declaring she doesn't really value her life and is willing to pay the price of embracing that danger.

Basically the idea is that they're reflections of each other, discontent guilt-ridden young people who see themselves as parasites of the system (Hathaway being a nepo baby who got away with literal murder and all the advantages of Fed elite and Gigi selling herself for a comfortable life when she's conscious of the suffering around her) with self-destructive inclinations. Hathaway's character arc is about accepting his eventual martyrdom and Gigi comes to the point where she chooses to discard her life in favor of involving herself with Hathaway and Kenneth in search of something real.

Nobody knew it was him since there were no witnesses and he never confessed to it. There's a shitty "official" fanfic that says Bright found out but covered for him. Then Unicorn came out a few years later and they never mention.

They will have to handwave it away that either Hathaway didn't get back with the Jegan and it was lost or they wiped the system before taking a look at what happened because Hathaway technically stole a piece of military equipment

The novel follows up on Beltorchika's Children where Hathaway killed Quess instead, so I suppose that's easier to pave over with just handwaving it as him killing an enemy combatant. But either way the point is that nobody wanted to touch the son of the man who stopped Char's Rebellion and Hathaway has to live with the reality of never getting the punishment he deserves (until the end of Hathaway's Flash, if we see that as as a fulfillment of his atonement) and being the very personification of the privilege he despises.

Wasn't the movie purposefully vague about whether it followed Beltorchika's Chilldren or not? I'd kill for the Hi-Nu and Nightingale to be animated though.

The Federation gerontocracy would fight and stomp any chance at reform even if by some miracle the AEUG/pro-Spacenoid faction managed to get a charismatic leader to push through and galvanized popular support Mafty eventually got. The Titans were a feature, not a bug and even Jamitov/AEUG got ahead in the Gryps Conflict only because the Titans got too greedy and thought they could remove the old men from the equation.

90FF and the F91 prequel manga are trying to make a big deal of Engeist Ronah (Meitzer's older brother) stirring things up in the EF congress. It shows just how sclerotic the EF is that they're incapable of giving just one inch to the colonies to appease them.

The EF after OYW exemplifies the idea that every politician's first instinct is to bury their head in the sand. Even taking the Gryps War into account, the speed which they surrendered to Haman and integrated themselves into her court was just shameful.

when Hathaway has his PTSD moment when Gigi runs to Kenneth it shows the exact scene of Quess doing the same when she runs to Char in CCA

no. AEUG tried to stay within the system after defeating the Titans and it amounted to a whole lot of nothing.
Only thing Hathaway would achieve is getting stonewalled at every turn or getting assassinated if he actually starts to make headway.

AEUG was a fighting force first and political faction third, and lacked a leader with the guile to rise through the Federation like Jamitov could.
