If you knew how much they make in tips a shift you'd laugh at them as hard as I do. I lived with a 6/10 waitress and 7/10 hostess in my mid 20s when I worked in restaurants and what I learned from them is the reason I don't tip anymore. If you only knew how much they make you wouldn't tip anyone who wasn't deformed or over the age of 45 either. I can say with confidence they're doing better than you are.

Unfortunately, just offering to pay gives you the best chance of success, so you should go ahead and do it. Hopefully she will stop you and pay for her part, and that's how you know she's a potential keeper.

You know what's even better though? Don't even go to a restaurant at all, go to a coffee place instead and avoid the entire problem. Worst case scenario is you pay for a $5 coffee, instead of a $100 meal. Pro-tip for you.

false. if everyone stopped tipping there'd be a few more homeless people and capitalists would still control everything.

It wouldn't help. Most waiters get paid way above minimum wage when factoring in tipping. If no one tipped and they were just paid minimum wage they would be a lot worse off. Also even if they get tipped below minimum wage their employer is legally required to make up the difference.

Not too long ago, stores were closed on Sunday. Because no one would have shopped on Sunday anyways, it wasn’t a big deal. Christian morality gave way to modern convenience and stores started opening. You better believe if people stopped showing up on Sunday, stores would stop opening. Why staff a building when you make no money? It’s not even a matter of “can it be done?” Chick-fil-A is hugely successful and their position is “if it’s a Sunday, go ahead and get KFC.”

I had to sacrifice weekends and vacations working in my twenties so I could turn a profit and support my then pregnant girlfriend. I came close to filing for bankruptcy on multiple occasions, but I pulled through. I also hire many high school students and compensate them fairly according to inflation. Every single time I hear one of you punks agonizing over how hard you work, I pull out of my phone and show them my schedule. That usually shuts them up. Tipping is moral extortion meant to line the pockets of business owners while foisting the responsibility of their own employees wage onto the customer while giving the customer 0 power to fire or actually manage said employee. Spoiled waiters and waitresses with ideal hours are incentivized to defend this extortion because they make far more money than they normally would with this job by continuing to guilt customers into this extortion racket.

If you have an IQ above 100, you are in favor of abolishing tipping. Only idiots think it's a good system.

Your argument doesn't do anything to defend tipping as a justified practice but merely resorts to more moral extortion. I couldn't possibly care less if it's a hard job. We don't turn all of these other hard jobs that exist into tipping models where we turn workers into glorified beggars hassling people for extra money constantly because it's "socially expected", so there's no reason waiters or waitresses as a profession should have that luxury either. Fricking get rid of it.

Stop aiming your anger at people who should have absolutely fricking nothing to do with how much you are paid. It is not a customer's job to make sure you have enough money. They are a customer, not your friend. Don't like it? Get a different job. The customer is not your employer.

Why not just not put that burden onto me to pay their/your wage, list the food prices for exactly what they cost including any possible delivery charge being openly displayed, and then just let me decide whether I want to pay those prices or not?

The answer is because then there wouldn't be a flimsy excuse for a restaurant's employees to morally extort me for extra money and the business gets fewer sales since they'd have to list their food prices for what they were actually charging rather than listing them much cheaper and then just assfricking idiots with hidden fees.

The customer is never and will never be responsible for an employees wage no matter how hard these corporate dickheads try to make it your problem. Stop falling for their bullshit.

                Anonymous

WRONG. Bullshit cope. People feel pressured to mandatorily tip and every study on the matter has found that the vast majority of tippers do not actually meaningfully change the amount they tip unless service is unusually bad.

The industry is so confident in getting away with its bullshit anyways that many restaurants have made minimum tips mandatory at this point anyways or ban customers who don't tip. Even if they don't do this, they'll deliberately give those customers terrible service to punish them for not tipping as much as richer customers, so it's actually a racist, anti-poor practice and incentivizes worse service for poorer customers if you want to take the homosexual SJW route.

No matter what, tipping is shit. From every angle except the angle of pampered service industry workers with the best hours(another unfair practice) and the owners.

It's factually true. If people feel compelled to tip beyond their means, that's an issue with culture not the mechanical practice of tipping

I've illustrated no less than 10 ways in which it is corrupt and needlessly inconveniences customers and is extremely unbalanced and unfair. You've done nothing to defend it as a practice or list in what ways it's actually good, because it simply isn't. The only people it is beneficial to are service industry workers who are lucky enough to get good hours and owners for being able to trick customers, list artificially low prices, and gut them with hidden fees.

                >Why not just not put that burden onto me
Entrenchment by the industry overall, i.e everyone expects and is expected to tip. A singular guy or business can't change that, and the ones that try will get spit in their food and go out of business respectively.

                >The answer is because
Above. Anything else is just a cope.

                >The customer is never and will never be responsible for an employees wage
They technically aren't, you're just giving a completely voluntary tip.

                >Stop falling for their bullshit.
                See the first post.

In other words, it is bullshit, you acknowledge I'm correct, but personally feel helpless to institute a change because it's so heavily entrenched and you think 1 person never changed anything.

Tips are increasingly involuntary btw and are considered a mandatory charge by restaurants at this point. They just hide it from menu prices and automatically charge you an additional mandatory tip fee. Even those that don't simply use extortion to try and force it.

It's only bullshit if you completely ignore that it's the system currently in place, while considering the consequences also being bullshit.
In other words no, it "exists" and you will suffer the consequences.

                >Feel helpless
I don't care since I'm not an American. I just think your personal thinking on the matter, and by other extension other matters, is childish and moronic.

                >Tips are mandatory
Oh, then they're essentially transitioning into you paying the costs of their wages in a more direct way rather than the loose "voluntary" system they had before? Isn't that you wanted? The price to reflect the cost of your meals being served to you?

                >It's only bullshit if you completely ignore that it's the system currently in place
What kind of dumbfrick nonsense argument is this? What part of you thought this was an intelligent thing to say? The correctitude of a system is determined by its status of implementation? Just lmfao. Actual moron.

                > I just think your personal thinking on the matter, and by other extension other matters, is childish and moronic.
Then you're a moron since, like the other guy, you haven't actually presented any reason why tipping should be in place other than "it just is that way". Your way of thinking is far more childish than mine.

                >Oh, then they're essentially transitioning into you paying the costs of their wages in a more direct way rather than the loose "voluntary" system they had before? Isn't that you wanted? The price to reflect the cost of your meals being served to you?
Yes, but directly listed in prices rather than as hidden "tip" and "service" fees that they apply after tallying your total along with tax that they don't even list anywhere on their menus.

                >What kind of argument is this?
Do you mean the system is "bullshit" in that it doesn't exist, yes or no? Try actually giving an answer this time instead of seething.

                >you haven't actually presented any reason why tipping should be in place other than "it just is that way"
Ah, so you are purely arguing on a "why is X better" position. The problem is that even if it is better, your individual actions do nothing to solve the problem. Not tipping isn't you being "moral", you're just being cheap and dressing it up as such.

                >Your way of thinking is far more childish than mine.
                "Just lmfao. Actual moron."

                >Do you mean the system is "bullshit" in that it doesn't exist, yes or no?
No you fricking idiot. I'm guessing you're ESL since no native English speaker on the planet could possibly have read my posts and come to the conclusion that I was arguing that tipping doesn't exist. I'm arguing that it shouldn't.

                >The problem is that even if it is better, your individual actions do nothing to solve the problem.
People enact change by acting as an individual and acting together. If Americans actually collectively rejected tipping, it would go away.

                >Not tipping isn't you being "moral", you're just being cheap and dressing it up as such.
Again, more moral extortion and shifting of blame. "If you don't tip, you're just hurting the poor delivery driver." I'm not the one who set up his salary. I didn't make the owner's business model. You are directing your blame at the wrong person. This is no different than the owners holding up the service industry people as human shields to say "Look! If you don't pay their wages, they're going to suffer! This is YOUR fault! If you try not tipping, you're just hurting them!"

Do you genuinely not see the corruption and blame shifting going on there? At no point should a delivery guy get angry with a customer about his salary arrangement with his employer.

                >"Just lmfao. Actual moron."
Not my fault you're acting like an idiot.

                >So?
So that the customer knows exactly what they're paying ahead of time and doesn't have to deal with the bullshit moral extortion that is tipping. They just pay and that's it. It works like that everywhere else in the world.

Oh, forgot to add: they don't include mandatory tipping as some kind of flat cost even, which would be the ideal. They still leave it open because they're greedy c**ts. It's mandatory MINIMUM tips, usually 3-5$. Tipping is increasingly becoming no longer optional, but the new meta is basically Office Space's pieces of flair. We wouldn't want to just have the bare minimum tip and be a cheapo that upsets the delivery guy, now would we?

Then what's the fee for? Sounds like you need to take it up with management. Those fees are for gas and maintenance on company owned vehicles. If you're using a personal vehicle that fee shouldn't exist or it should be going directly to you instead. Your employer is scamming you dummy. But of course you won't say anything to jeopardize your position because you're making more than enough from the people who do tip, aren't you? A whole lot than you'd make at a department store or warehouse or doing data entry.

Not going to read the thread because I know it's filled with moron opinions, but the only Americans I know who don't tip are the ones who work shitty retail jobs and need someone to feel superior to, AKA waitstaff. Well, and Black folk of course. The only other exception is homosexual trust fund kids who have no idea how money even works. The point is if you're making six figures like any well-adjusted, successful person, you don't even give tipping a second thought unless you're subjected to terrible service. Then again, successful people also don't spend money on restaurants every day.

I’m actually at a job now where I could tell somebody to frick themself to their face and they wouldn’t be able to do anything because I work in a field gatekeeped by the government and my clients need my signature for every little advancement they hope to make. Absolute Hell is having to serve people that you know are genetically inferior to you and I hope to never be in a position where I’m doing that again, even if it’s only part time like before.
