"Brothers" is how their dynamic should be handled, regularly having each other's back while making playful jabs when the opportunity arises.
Better than having Tails be a lame wuss and Sonic being a boring hero who is rarely ever called out or challenged by anyone that isn't the designated antagonist. Would make their friendship feel more realistic.
Unfortunately, I get the impression that the Jap devs are more interested in the plain "Batman and Robin"-esque dynamic, and autists get upset whenever characters snark at each other because they can't comprehend the concept of sarcasm and friendly banter, so this will never be the standard.
Tails has very low self confidence and wants someone to look up to and give him worth.
Sonic has a massive ego and wants someone to control and to kiss his ass.
They mutually exist in this regard. Tails worships Sonic and submits to him and anything he wants, and Sonic allows Tails to be in the presence of such a cool hero and be trained to become one himself.
Is it slightly exploitative? Yes, but they both get what they want in the end.
I feel over the years with him he starts to. He does eventually become more snarky and jabbing fake-insults with Sonic but I feel he also eventually calls Sonic out if his idea is shit or if he is doing something shitty
It does makes sense, would be fun to see Tails grow up to be quite good with banter, like being around someone like Sonic all the time plus his own brilliance makes him develope his own style of bantz
This is unfortunately what Sega has set in stone by design.
The Adventures Games weremeant to change this.
Yes, Sonic has a massive ego, but he cares about Tails, thinks of him as a little bro, and by default wants to see him succeed.
Tails looks up to Sonic as inspiration and as his big bro. At first, he doesn't believe he can't do anything without Sonic's help. Tails is a kid and has self-esteem issues from his past.
But eventually, Tails manages to land some feats of his own, and realizes that he does have the power to kick ass too and get the job done.
But despite that, Sonic and Tails still work the best as a pair, and both know how to combine their strengths to better kick ass. From here, they are equals, and help each other when one needs it.
However, I'll pull some stuff from Archie now, because the later games... well...
Remember how Sonic has a massive ego? Yeah, that gets to him sometimes, and he believes that Tails as his bro, will always back him over all else.
As we would see in Archie, Tails at one point has had enough of that, and decides to call out and push back against Sonic, as he is tired of being seen as a little kid that doesn't know any better, and he wants to be seen as an equal and not be manipulated.
While I hate the whole love triangle stuff, Sonic assuming that Tails would just simply follow him without question when his parents get jailed, especially after previous events, is a good moment for Sonic to get an ego check and to realize that he's been hurting his bro. And thankfully, both grow from this moment (Sonic stops being a dick and Tails is more independent) and everything is a-ok between them from there.
Aren’t they brothers?
From the same biological family?
no?
How can they be brothers when Tails is a girl?
Tails is a girl?
They’re gay?
No
Yes
Tails is canonically a Ladies' man
Don't you mean a "ladyman"
CARLOS!!

The best kind of brothers. Not blood related.
no.
Yes. Not biologically obviously, but in an adopted sense.
They're gay and it's cute
They don't have one in Japanese canon. nuTails is nuSonic's chauffeur and mechanic.

Tails needs to be willing to confront Sonic from time to time and call him out.

He starts to with some media, though I wonder what twist he'd give to his humor
damn i cant believe the sonic 2 movie did their dynamic better than any of the cartoons
it was oddly adorable too
Tails is a prop character who got muscled out of any characterization by Knuckles.
Yeah kinda. And no joke, movie Sonic alreay grafts certain things from Tails
>Tails is a prop character
this lol, but across the franchise
That can be said of every character in a franchise whose writing has never been its forte, some are not even props anymore.
>tfw Tails will never spy on you while you shower

hell yeah!
That's the kind of friendship I'd like to have with Tails.
Tails just follows Sonic around and Sonic is too nice to tell him to go away
