I don't understand why people went so crazy for this movie.

I don't understand why people went so crazy for this movie. It's not bad or anything, but its pretty typical Godzilla fare. I've seen the exact same movie in 1954, 1985, 1998, and 2016.

Well Black person, everything seems to be about politics to the people making movies, as well as the most prominent voices that reach filmmakers. To the point that they will complain when a company rep says something like, "We don't want to get political" because that statement is extremely politically charged to them. Asking "Why do you care?" doesn't work anymore. You obviously care, homosexual. Everyone who doesn't vocally praise a movie for a lack of pozzed shit is someone who wants more pozzed shit or is thoroughly demoralized by pozzed homosexuals shaming them for caring. There is no good faith interpretation anymore. We know you're a lefy homosexual and you need to have a nice day. It's true that Minus One's filmmakers probably didn't have any western identity politics on their mind, it doesn't mean the lack of idpol garbage wasn't incredibly refreshing for westerners. They have to deal with financial systems that make them poor, doctors who make them sick, and entertainment made to depress and annoy them.

People like Evil Godzilla because he is easy to digest for kids, but he's also a commentary on something that happened 80 years ago.
Good Godzilla is a critique of today, he gets upset by underground nuclear testing and pollution, good Godzilla is just trying to be understood by scientists and sees buildings as happenstance.
People don't want that because nobody funding movies wants to question unfettered technological growth, but it's been really popular to go "You know... this country has a fricked up past, it's real shit. No I don't fricking care who I offend"

One thing is certain; Hollywood should be paying attention.
It was made for $15m yet made $50m US domestic on limited release (half the cinemas at its peak).
It's enough that it didn't suck.

What a moronic take and I'm sick to death of redditors saying this just because they hate Marvel or something. The only people who should be taking note are Japanese and other eastern studios who can start pumping out movies and make money from the west and not just domestically, this movie did worse than Shin in Japan and still made bank because of it's wide release.
Movies like Shin Ultraman and Kamen rider could have been much better with bigger budgets because there would be actual money to be made from them. China could start making movies good enough to release in the west, they can have random war movies making like a billion dollars over there and easily make enough over here to justify releasing them for propaganda purposes alone. Not every fricking thing needs to come from Hollywood you fricking cretin. Wider competition would be great

Frick no, you haven’t. It’s not the Godzilla shit that people are praising about the movie, though those scenes are top tier. It’s that they actually for once managed to make a cast of characters who keep you engaged, and aren’t just filler between kaiju scenes.

This is the thematic opposite of Shin, which was about creaking and bloated govern bureaucracy failing to prevent catastrophe. In this one, the government’s barely even involved. This is the first movie in the series where I actually was rooting for the humans against Godzilla, rather than the opposite, or just being indifferent toward them. The entire cast is well-defined, has a role to play, display growth and development, and you come to like all of them. I’ve watched ‘85 I couldn’t even tell you how many times, and I couldn’t tell you a single character’s name.

Yeah this is the crux of it. Just like Shin Godzilla, it's not what it says, it's what it doesn't say. Yamazaki likes to present a nice sanitized version of post-war Japan. Meanwhile, the actual creative people behind the classic Godzilla movies were involved with the war and were disgusted by the shit that Japan was doing in it.

Hardly. All the effects in the Heisei series were by-the-numbers and just point-and-shoot. G2K brought Godzilla back down to 50 meters and let them make the miniatures more detailed, and they did more low-angle shots and it was the first Godzilla movie with CG breath and it looked great.

        lmao doubt
If you read views by critics of the regime they were pretty open about how extremely heavy american censorship was in the post-war period.
Shigeru Mizuki (who lost his arm from disease in the war and almost got killed by the jp army multiple times and got forcibly volunteered for a suicide mission) darkly noted that the americans talked a whole lot of empty words about truth and liberty but that post-war school children still used the same books as before except the americans had inked out the patriotic parts about doing the best for your homeland. (and this was by a guy who had no idealistic illusions about hyper-nationalism)

Everybody knows japan was fricked uo during the war but that doesn’t mean things didn’t suck for civilians that had their cities bombed. You missed basically the whole point of the movie that war bad and what japan was doing was fricked up.

He gets an experimental aircraft with a foreshadowed feature that allows him to survive before appearing to sacrifice himself to save the city.

      >No, I came back to stop you *ejector seat*
would have been an improvement if they ripped it off more

Except it has no thematic weight here. In Minus One the whole point is he was too cowardly when it was expected, and when he was ready to die everyone wanted him to live. Joel Schumacher has the Batman theme right; the only way for Batman to achieve catharsis over losing his parents is to foster a family of his own

    PROS
    >Novel take on source material, a love letter to the 70 yo original
    >a true period piece, takes places over years and gives a unique look at Japanese post-wat psychology
    >Satisfying character arcs, everyone evolves and learns

    CONS
    >Long-winded in parts with a super-wide middle
    >Godzilla ALREADY exists before the bombs but smaller, never explained
    >Godzilla has too much chest, a swimming/bipedal animal would have no chest development

Overall a 7/10, definitely worth watching but I probably won't come back for a while because of length.

      >Godzilla ALREADY exists before the bombs but smaller, never explained
Isn't that how it was in the '54 original? He was just a a dino minding his own business that became a local legend across generations

Does it get rid of Jet Jaguar, Mothra or Rodan? Or is this a broody reboot for the dark lighting era?

I do hope Toho takes a more light-hearted direction with their future goji projects. Bring back other monsters, make new ones.
Darker solo Godzilla is good, but you can only do it so many times before it gets dull and repetitive. -1 imo is the best execution we're ever gonna get of this take on the character.

At least we got these shorts.
