Why are British films/shows much more willing to cast ugly actors than American ones? I'm not complaining - the uniform prettiness of the average American TV series is visually dull once you've finished wanking - but I am curious as to why the divide is there.
Two reasons, british people are generally homely so you take what you can get and they're still in the after wave of talent over looks even though that's disappearing like it did in America.

It's a conundrum, they cast goblins like Zendaya but they cast them based on looks because that's what modern beauty standards have given us.

The British industry seems to value character actors more - maybe it is a lingering element from British theatre acting or something. Perhaps the other reason is the stuff the British tend to produce, both focus and number of episodes, lends itself more to such type of performers.

I understood this when I lived in Santa Monica for a few months, its because there is no LA that draws all the best looking people into one place.
I used to wonder why even the extras in American stuff had to be good looking, but of course if you go to a coffee shop or something there everyone that works there is only there because they were the best looking kid in their town and thought they'd get into dem movies.

It does something annoying that by Series 3 it's almost like a soft reboot of all the progress made up until that point but it's comfy kino with a good finale.
