I've said this in another thread, but this anime changed my life for the better and I found the whole thing to be a very cathartic and therapeutic experience that allowed me to let go of my adolescent agnst and issues from when I was younger.

Shinji in the show's ending goes against instrumentality. He realizes that to have a self, he needs other people; to be an individual requires other people to exist. How can you listen to Shinji talking about wanting to be himself and conclude that he accepts instrumentality? Accepting it means he isn't an individual anymore, there is no 'me'.
