When I was a kid there was another kid in my street that had a chess set and I wanted to play it so badly I cried and cried and my parents bought me one, but I had no one to play with, nor I knew the rules. Neither did them, so I kinda just played alone or with my now deceased uncle but he didn't know how to play either
That was ages ago, like 20 years and just now I actually bothered reading the rules and simple principles like trying to control the mid squares

I unironically like this scene. It establishes that they don't know how to play chess not because they're dumb but because they can't relate to it. Once it's explained in terms of "their world", they instantly start understanding how chess works (which is an idea S4 expands on). D'Angelo knowing how to play chess is a hint that he's not like the others. Also "Pawns be out the game early" foreshadows Wallace's death.
