It moves from idea to idea at a gradual enough pace that by the time Kazuki and Soushi become gods of destroying Festum, you never really question it because you saw their growth to this point. That's why episode 9 of Exodus is so great, because much like the characters you know everything will be ok now that Kazuki and Soushi are here and it's this giant relief after everything feels so doomed.
The Beyond finally finished recently and a spin off Behind the Line (?) is in development. The spin-off is supposedly just a SoL one-shot

I think the benefit is that majority of the science magic has real side effects
Fafner is ugly in DA but characters because easy to identify by archtype once we exit the "trying to be mysterious phase" of the show and everyone basic personality traits are established beyond Kazuki and Soushi.

Only character's design I've ever conflated was Shouko and some other b***h who had black hair and a similar hairstyle
I only ever found Hiraiface to be a problem when I played SRW K. At the time, I didn't know any katakana or anything, so I couldn't even read any names. So, it was always an experience as to whether or not it was a DESTINY stage or a Fafner stage.
Otherwise, I'd say Hirai's sorta sameface thing is really only a problem in SEED/SEED DESTINY. Sure, Hirai has a really distinct way of drawing faces, but his work outside of Cosmic Era Gundam is really distinct in my opinion. He's not bad in stuff like s-CRY-ed or Majestic Prince where he gets to to be a bit more fanciful. Even in Fafner, I never had any trouble. It's really only when Fafner and Destiny's casts mesh (And I'm only seeing them from the neck up) that I could get confused.
You can see her favoring her left, and some shots VERY FAINTLY see that her right eye is drawn with less light in it, so the implication is her right eye is blind but she's still Maya so can pretty much compensate. Don't think we see her use her SDP without it though.
Majestic Prince actually got the most diverse designs character wise. The hairstyles and eye shapes of of the Rabbits Team are all distinct from one another that it was easy to tell who's who.
I think the biggest issue with Fafner's designs compared to other Hirai is that the more average/normal hair color going around. Mostly shades of brown/black, whereas SEED or MJP get more wild.
He worked in Fafner the Beyond which was released in 2019-2021, also there's Fafner Behind the Line in 2023, and the SEED movie for like 2025 where I guess he will do the character design again.

The only way I can tell Maris and Malespero apart is hair color. Hell, it's kind of difficult to tell Koyo and Misao apart in The Beyond.

I ended up giving up on it, it made it hard for me to follow whatever the frick was going on.

Is Hirai still in the industry? I haven't seen Hiraiface in anything since MJP.
His last new project was MJP, other than that, it's just been existing franchise continuations like Fafner.
