I'm halfway through my third watch and while shinjin is a doormat he is not a coward. In every conflict where he hasn't been exposed to unreal trauma he holds it together quite well. so far he is just a very rudderless people pleaser who is hyper conflict averse, but he is actually the best pilot.
Then Auska is the inverse of that, where she is presented as a hyper capable polymath but has the most trouble in her deployments and is the most prone to unstable emotional outbursts driven by jealousy and insecurity.
I love the way Misato and basically every other adult are totally psychopathic with the kids, worrying about them personally one moment and then being very callus when the kids are in danger, like when Auska is sent into the volcano far past the safety limits.

The series is weird, because there is a certain episode where it is clear they decide to shift gears from the upward trajectory that the characters are on and decide to go downward and downward.
In the end, it is hard to imagine Shinji rejecting the perfect life he is imagining in instrumentality. They say that he make his life like that in real life, but your own choices can only really get you so far in real life. It relies on others wanting to be there with you if you want your life to contain others, and managing that is easier said then done.
I think the final scene is amazing, but it really reminds me of mantras that depressed people tell themselves to be less depressed, and it only somewhat working. Another criticism I had was that Asuka and Rei's arcs were dropped. The collapse of Nerv being unexplained was fine, but Asuka and Rei basically became protagonists themselves, and they deserved their own ending. Despite it all, I prefer it to EOE.

I’ve rewatched the series now after watching it for the first time over Xmas. It still makes literally no sense. 1st time around I loved the show ending, I gave it a lot of credit that I had missed things I didn’t get it and the scene OP posted is great.

Yes they probably suffered from PTSD afterwards but that doesn't change what they did actually mattered. They are considered the greatest generation for a reason.

I watched it once. Didn’t get it. Then I watched it start to finish a second time. Everything came together. Even the cryptic plot points. As for the end, he is just trying to covey a simple message: “you mustn’t run away.” I.e. do not try to run away from living life in the real world, because you can’t. The real world will always come and get you. Perhaps for eternity. A message that becomes more relevant for a greater number of people with each passing year.
Oh and a secondary message laid over the top of it: if at first you don’t succeed, try and try again. That sounds glib, but most people don’t grasp or appreciate just how key this is to achieving any endeavor. It really needs stressing and emphasizing, which this show does very well.

It´s really not and never was. Evangelion took a lots of elements from lesser known anime shows. That said it did add enough meaningful contributions to be considered of historical value.
Back in the day deep character development only applied to anime movies. Shows were more shallow and one dimensional. Evangelion was one of the few anime that helped set a new standard for character complexity in shows; a quality that really helped anime to break in in the west and set it apart from cartoons and old stuff. For a good while any anime worth something followed suit.
So yeah, Evangelion was important but these days it´s contributions are common place.
