having an overly elaborate plot that requires homework (which I did because I enjoyed Donnie Darko for what it was and the premise sounded interesting) doesn't make a movie good. It should get credit for being ambitious and doing a lot with the budget he was given, but kelly isn't a very good director, most of the performances were shit, and trying to make "pimps don't commit suicide" sound cool didn't work.
>pimps don't commit suicide
it wasn't supposed to sound cool. it's funny, it's a comedy. but thank you for reminding me of one of the funniest lines in cinema history.
Richard Kelly was fricking crucified for the sin of being a real artist. I don't care that his movies made no money, they were all kino. Even The Box. We live in a sick fricking world where freaks like Shyamalan are allowed to run rampant while true american auteurs are held in Hollywood limbo.
I liked The Box. Well, the concept of it. The movie was weird, but I figured 'no shit, it's a weird movie.' I think you're right. I'll parrot your opinion for you to complete strangers from now on.
Kelly took a Twilight Zone script and turned it into Catholic allegory. He's all about Jesus. Southland Tales is explicitly about Christianity being the one true religion
Pretty simple, just a story of a chosen figure"s self sacrifice to save the world, but I also subscribe to the conspiracy theory that Kelly didn't write that one.
Interesting. I love the movie because it's truly a capsule of Y2K post 9/11 / Bush. The actors, effects, cinematography, etc. I understand people who say the movie is a mess plotwise, but the world in which it takes place is really interesting. Really captures that comic book feeling. Personally it's in my top 10, it just pulls me in and keeps lingering in my head.
Its the type of first contact story rarely explored in cinema. Really not what people were expecting. The soiience crowd lacks imagination so for them, the scenario is always straight forward. Maybe they get as far as The Day The Earth Stood Still territory, still pretty pedestrian. The Box is more like a print sf story, with somewhat chaotic and enigmatic forces displaying their power in unconventional ways, ya know?
Southland Tales is one of my favourite films but I really hate this scene and that song.
Love Hot Fuss, though.
The movie that proved to me that critics can't be trusted and most people are too illiterate to have opinions on art.
>had to read an obscure comic not advertised or sold anywhere in order to understand the story
Pure kino.
>he didn't understand the story without reading the comic
filtered
You couldn't even understand my 2 sentence post, you expect me to believe you understood a story without reading it?

>post doesn't start with a capital letter
Opinion discarded.
>fat moron posts an image of a fat moron
Pottery.
You're getting awfully upset about someone else's opinion regarding a shitty movie that came out almost 20 years ago.

well then if failed in both respects, but at least someone enjoyed it.
I'm a pimp, and pimps don't commit suicide.
I didn't get it
Me neither. What was it even saying?
Some day I hope to get hit in the head with a shovel and the meaning will be unlocked.

What was the Jesus angle in Donny Darko?

I like the whole Jane's Addiction thread.
Is that McNultys kid?

I GOT HAM BUT I'M NOT A HAMSTER
This was the most moronic and boring film I’ve ever seen
Teen horniness is not a crime!
Fricking great movie and a good NPC filter. One of the first Blu rays I bought, will probably rewatch this week now
ah yes, the documentary of today's life
