Eddy was justified, he tries so hard all year to earn his own cash and gets foiled every time, and his parents give him awful clothes instead of a single thing he wants. Maybe if he wasn't constantly disappointed he'd be a little more charitable.

Never got how Eddy was supposed to come off as selfish here. Most people can afford to go clothes shopping every once and a while, so buying nothing but clothes for Christmas was always stupid as a concept, especially getting types of shit your kid has no real interest or use for that'll collect dust on the shelf for years to come.
The fact that they didn't even bother at least to get anything that Eddy actually wanted, shows they didn't really try to ask him about what he wanted, or cared much for Eddy's thoughts on the matter. Instead, they did what wanted for him. If any of the other kids (Jimmy, Ed, Sarah, Kevin, Nazz, maybe Jonny) in the show aside from Double D had this happen to them, you know they'd be pissed or dissapointed as well, but since it's Eddy, he's the worst for it, something that became really prevelant in the later seasons.
If they really want to show that Eddy was being selfish, just make it that he actually did get everything he wanted; but still wanted more, because their was one new thing he didn't add in time, THAN he goes out of his way to try to scam that excat gift from one of the kids one by one, and failing at it.
He had a pretty snazzy homelife in the first seasons. I guess turning the series into torture porn seemed more appealing. It was the style of the time.
You can see toward the end of season 4 everyone's personalities started to get more extreme. Like actual flanderization. Things such as Edd being more uptight and Ed getting dumber if that's possible. Season 5 took it a notch further. I don't think 5 ruins the series, but I think the show turns up the antics during that time and it can sometimes be too much. People like Johnny, Nazz, Rolph, and Jimmy kind of stay the same.
It's not binary. Eddy can still be a selfish grouchy prick but have a solid reason for being that way every year. He's supposed to come off as selfish by how he couldn't even pretend to give a shit about anything besides presents around his own friends, not that he was ungrateful for the lame and outdated clothes his parents gave him. Hell, considering that I've always held to the theory that most of what Eddie owns is shit handed down to him from his brother and dad, it made total sense to me why they constantly give him clothes for Christmas and why he's always pissed off about it since his parents would presume they're doing Eddy a favor getting him proper replacements for all those secondhand clothes he owns while Eddy just feels humiliated for having more things he never asked for foisted onto him and being expected to smile about it.
