I hate this type of character.

>No fun allowed
>The voice of reason
>Usually a foil to the wacky antics of the main cast
>"I can't believe you'd do something so irresponsible"
>"Your so busted"

Also, I was debating with my girlfriend who this this type of character is sexist. I don't think it is but the only male version I can think of is Squidward (who I think is a different "type".

Yeah, nope. Hugh Test is Ian James Corlett and Harold Buttowski is Brian Stepanek. By the way, I think the former is definitely the kind of male nag that fits OP’s description

But enough about those two, is there other characters out there who are like this. I’ve heard of people getting pissed off with the straight man in comedy manga/anime. The manga is doing something fun but the straight character has to point out why it’s weird. It happens a lot on bobobo, is that the same as this?

So THAT’S why he’s fricking insane. Transgenderism strikes again

It can be funny if the straight man is ignored or joins in on the craziness.

That does sound funny. That reminds me of the OG Sherlock Holmes stories. He’d do something crazy, then his resident straight man, Watson, would be like “shit, this is happening now. It’s going to be a hell of a time, especially with you.” Not like his more modern day interpretations.

I think “wet noodle” can also fit this archetype, but with less energy

As an antagonistic force or a method to teach the audience right from wrong but initially in a condescending way like a boomer parent. You learn the lesson at the end after you experience it for yourself.

Now I’m interested in this archetype, who else can serve as an example. These kinds of characters seem to mainly have melancholic temperaments

You're right. I think it's important to make things clear for children.
        >No, Kevin, you shouldn't build a nuclear reactor in your backyard, because you will die.
        >Absolutelly not, Dewey, running a cable to the roof to "get more electricity" will burn your body and it will hurt until you die.
        >Sheldon, my boy, I understand you want to experiment with caustic soda, but I don't want to see you become blind because I was a bad parent.
Sure enough, it makes it boring for adults.

I think Squidward is more of a fun hating grump rather than the nagging wife
Benson from Regular Show or Raven from Teen Titans is similar

      Anonymous

You’re right about Squidward, but Benson was just trying to do his job. Not to mention almost every time his employees don’t do what their told, some city-leveling bullshit happens

Raven’s more like a cat, wants to be left alone and doesn’t suffer bullshit.

That and Benson isn’t above screwing around and having fun if he can get away with it, he just doesn’t get a lot of opportunities for that.

Not when his job and sometimes the world is on the line, nope. Are there others like that?

      Anonymous

But it’s interesting you brought him up. Benson definitely is a nag but in an unusually high octane environment. It’s like a general yelling at his soldiers for being loose cannons or fricking up simple commands in the middle of a war. Could it be that what makes this archetype of the nag insufferable is the environment it contrasts with?

  11. 11 months ago

I kind of tend to feel bad for this type of characters, as if they would like to be more carefree and have fun, but for some reason they can't let themselves to do it. It's sad.

      Anonymous

Maybe it’s because they’re physically weak? This archetype is mostly women who are prone to physical weakness so they don’t want to get hurt by general chaos

        Anonymous

I don’t think its about that, but rather about how they are always in such a bad mood, like there is something in their interior that hurts them or something. Maybe I’m over thinking a silly archetype, but I have known people like that and it’s sad how they can’t let even themselves be happy.

          Anonymous

          >always in a bad mood
I don’t remember where I heard this, but someone once said women experience some kind of pain every day. Removing gender from the equation, people like this find it irregular not to be in constant pain, so they can’t see things from the perspective of those who don’t.

          >something in the interior
It’s got to be fear at the end of the day. Fear will turn you into a nag and make those who want to have fun the enemy. Sometimes these fears are well founded too, have you seen the kind of character the fun-lovers have? How they invariably frick everything up getting their jollies. Some things deserve to get fricked up, but the nag can’t risk it

            Anonymous

I think you summed it up pretty well. The dynamic between the nag and the fun-lover is obviously based in a lack of understating of the other’s perspective and an unwillingness to do so. It gets gags and everything, but still the nag gets the short stick of any situation.
            >women experience some kind of pain every day
            That’s fricked up

              Yep, but after reading

              [...]

it made me realize that the story is almost always skewed towards the nag. It’s got to teach a lesson by the end and the nag is almost always right and that’s what makes it so hatable. We the audience are trying to have fun but the message is already anti-that. It’s way too preachy

              >That’s fricked up
I think it’s probably because they focus on it more. I sprained an ankle and I rarely pay attention to it except when I need to take a piss. I’m not bragging at all either, I let my emotions get the better of me and now I’m bedridden for weeks. The twisted ankle is my nag.

                >I step off my bed wrong
                >“THE CRUTCHES. GET THE CRUTCHES”
                alright jeez
                >I go to the bathroom

                I just want to walk
                >“you haven’t learned your lesson yet”

FRICK ME, no wonder this archetype sucks. And I can’t beat the shit out of it because it’s a conceptualization to my ankle’s healing process.

I always remember her part in Moominvalley in November, the part right after she tried to clean the outside of her window on the roof and came very close to having fallen off and died. She was frazzled by the near-death experience, and she started walking around her house in a daze. She distracted herself from the thoughts of death by admiring her case full of exquisite plates and silverware. I'll always remember when she said to herself "What a wonderful set of fine china. What will happen to it when I am gone?"

And that realization hit her like a truck, that she had no one she was close to in the world, and she immediately decided to visit the Moomin family for the exact warmth and mirth she had scoffed at and belittled for so long. I love the Fillyjonk.

More of a society issue than a woman issue. Men could theoretically be nagging but most people will remove them from the group as anon showed with Brainy smurf. This keeps them in check so that their good intentions to keep friends safe on day don't turn into malicious power plays to control the next day.

Marge is just how moms are. Especially when they have "difficult" husbands and sons. If she seems insufferable to you it's because your mother was also nagging all the time.

She’s super tame when compared to other nags because she definitely understands where her husband’s frustrations are coming from at least in earlier seasons. They used to have dreams but they fricked that up together and now they have to pick up the pieces together in their deceptively cruel world.
