As much as people try shitting on the prequels, they will still have nothing on the sequels completely destroying the original trilogy's arc.

            Anonymous

ironically you think the sequels "destroyed the arc of the OT" because you're applying prequel retcons about Darth Vader being a messianic chosen one to the OT

the ending of RotJ was never supposed to be a final victory of Space Jesus over the forces of evil forever, hell in the original ending of RotJ it's not even made clear that the Empire had fallen. George was clearly leaving the door open in case he decided t o ever make sequels.

Luke's arc was actually pretty smart on a conceptual level. But it hinges on the stupid moment with him and Ben Solo with the nightmare. Had they had a more convincing/in character misunderstanding the arc would've been kino.

          >Luke wins. Prophecy fulfilled. Force in balance, Empire defeated.
          >Luke and Co try to rebuild
          >Luke trains new Jedi, Leia and Han build the Republic.
          >Ben Solo is experiencing the force, acting out, has a darker side
          >Becomes too much for his parents to handle
          >They send him to Luke to train him how to control himself
          >Luke fails to stop him from being corrupted and may have even been indirectly responsible
          >Suddenly the bad side, who should be feeble and nothing at this point, have an all-star player for their comeback
          >Luke's Jedi are slaughtered, The Empire is reborn in the form of the First Order.
          >Luke decides that the Jedi's failure has now caused two evils to rise. That maybe the Jedi and their arrogance cause more harm than good.
          >Luke is eventually convinced otherwise by a younger Jedi who resembles him in his heyday.
          >Luke faces down the first order solo, even as a projection, and humiliates them and Kylo Ren.
          >A new legendary moment that will be retold across the galaxy
          >Becomes one with the force

There's an extra problem in that Kylo/Ben never get established as their own characters. None of the new characters do. Ben/Kylo is stuck in vague-backstory mode and in being a lame-duck imitation of Darth Vader.

            Anonymous

There's yet another problem: people like Luke and want to see him succeed, and anyone over the age of 10 already did with the EU. Yes yes, Trioculus, Han fricking weasel people, 90's edgelord bondage aliens; the EU had plenty of shit in it, but it also had Luke overcoming challenges to successfully found a NJO based on new thinking and new principles that sought to avoid the pitfalls of the old order, Leia becoming a powerful and effective stateswoman, a mother, and coming to terms with her own force sensitivity and heritage, and Han continuing his growth as a person to become a respected military leader and a caring father.

That's it, that's what people who aren't homosexualy dangerhaired pronouners wanted after they finished watching the OT, the natural continuation of the arcs and stories the characters experienced on screen. Deadbeat Midlife Crisis Han, Ineffectual b***hy Leia, and Broken Old Man Luke(note; Reclusive Hermit Luke is not the same thing, so if any disingenuous TLJgays are about to retort with abloobloo Goergy Porgey's sequels tho, feel free to do the world a favour and just skip to the part where you blow your brains out in a shitty run down motel) are not interesting unless you didn't actually like Star Wars.

The truth is that the OT is carried hard by gen x nostalgia in terms of reputation, and that George Lucas was never very good in terms of directing. Most criticisms against the prequels are also true of ANH and ROTJ, Lucas was just allowed to indulge in more of his excesses. Also, because of the negative hype a lot of criticism that's blatantly moronic was never questioned. The plot arcs of the prequels and especially Anakin are underrated, and ROTS is quite good.

Prequels or Originals is the perfect question to figure out who you are talking to. Someone who cares for writing, characters and themes will prefer OT and those who don't care about writing quality at all will prefer the spectacle of prequels. Your average audience member will prefer prequels because of the fast movements and shiny lights and people who care about actual stories will prefer substance of the originals

There's seriously nothing wrong with the writing of the prequels aside from some stilted dialogue. The prequels' real flaws lie with how bland the direction is, which is entirely on George.

The most hard core Gen X Star Wars fans knew what was going to happen in RotS. They knew Anakin was going to get F'd Up by Obi-Wan. The Gen Y and Zoomers were just following along one movie after another, most of the, just didn't know how exactly Anakin became Darth Vader.

      >The most hard core Gen X Star Wars fans knew what was going to happen in RotS

everyone knew what was going to happen, you didn't have to be a 'hardcore fan' to know Anakin would become Vader at the end. it was teased even in TPM marketing, and before the movie came out there were toys that transformed Anakin to Vader in every store.

boomers who watched the OT knew, and every zoomer knew from the marketing even if they hadn't seen the OT

The beginning and first act of RotS is peak Star Wars and the final act is decent, but the middle act drags as hell with all the usual prequel bullshit. I only really noticed it on the second watch. I guess people enjoy it more because it starts and ends strong, leaving a good impression.

ROTS is terrible and the fact Lucas didn't know what to emphasize with Anakin is extremely obvious even if you don't know the movie's production history.

    >Loved the prequels as a kid, but never watched the originals for a long time.
    >Stuck in grandma's house and saw she had the dvd set
    >A friend of mine likes these, I should watch them.
    >Instantly loved original trilogy more.
    >Try to go back to Prequels and fricking couldn't.
    >Even ROTS kinda blows now
Some of my dumber friends can still watch them, but they do that with everything they saw as a kid. I wish I could dot that, but I just can't love them like I used to
