phil having done gayness in prison is literally the only explanation that makes sense for the show in his relationship to other characters. he resents Vito for even attempting to live a free life as a gay man, not just for being gay. Phil lives in a state of constant denial and emotional atomization. He cries when Tony has that heart-to-heart with him in the hospital because he knows that he'll never be able to be emotionally honest with anyone in his lifetime, the expectations he faces wrt "being a man" have completely broken him
