i just finished Alien 3 for the first time, i was under the impression before i watched it that it was supposed to be bad? it was very interesting and i enjoyed it, why did Cinemaphile dislike it?

No Jonesy.
Imagine waiting years to see what happens to Newt, Hicks and Ripley in the sequel to Camerons all action space war movie Aliens.
Those are the people that hate it. I like it. Its a atmospheric as frick and creates a cool world but it is slow to the point of boring and to the normie the CGI is laughable. Its 90% because the kill Newt and Hicks off screen though.
i like that they gut those anticipations early on, and then move on with a new story
Sorry to hear about your moronation and pleb status.
>Imagine waiting years to see what happens to Newt, Hicks and Ripley in the sequel to Camerons all action space war movie Aliens.
It's basically the Alien version of people getting upset that Leon, Ada, Jill, and Becky die offscreen in Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. (Although that film does actually leave open the possibility Wesker fricked up and they survived somehow.)
Don't compare these
They're incredibly similar and invite comparison. Alice was even meant to die at the end of Final Chapter, but it was changed late in shooting, which is why the ending is edited weird. (Second vial toss.)
What a stupid fricking comparison. Aliens is a beloved classic of sci-fi, action and horror.
Ive shit more entertaining things than Resident Evil.
>Aliens is a beloved classic of sci-fi, action and horror.
Aliens was pretty widely regarded as the film that ruined the Alien franchise. Aliens fans don't know this, and you see something similar with Terminator 2 fans and Rambo 2 fans.
Aliens was despised on Usenet forums. A lot of films that are liked today had a very negative reception from fanboys. Terminator 2 was seen as a brain-dead sequel that wasn't even an action film. You know how Resident Evil (game) fans whine about the later games and the films not being horror? Well, the Terminator fanbase was enraged by Terminator 2 not being a horror film at all, feeling that Cameron had sold out, and turned Terminator into a joke, into a stupid film for teenagers.
>Terminator fanbase was enraged by Terminator 2 not being a horror film
This seems to happen with #2 in quite a few series. Silent Hill 2 was hated upon release, flopped in Japan, and almost led to the series being cancelled. But today, you'd think it was some kind of beloved classic, a defining entry in the series, and not the game that almost killed Silent Hill due to backlash from SH1's fanbase.
Things that never happened
I'll wait while you show me this 'widely regarded' viewpoint , because it just sounds to me like you know frick all and are fishing for a reaction, especially referencing T2.
Rambo 2was pure cash in bullshit, first blood is a great film. But trying to suggest Aliens ruined the franchise is dumber than rocks.
>I'll wait while you show me this 'widely regarded' viewpoint
Go read the old BBS and Usenet forums. I think Google has them archived. Terminator 2 was not super well liked by the Terminator 1 fanbase. The Terminator 2 fanbase is an entirely different creature. In videogame terms it's like Resident Evil, where most RE fans are fans of post-RE4 RE, but RE4 was hated by the fixed camera survival horror fanbase because it isn't a horror game. Terminator 2 is not a horror movie. That you're not aware of this is quite interesting.
Yawn.
>burden of proof is on the claimant
>"go look up this old shit i think is true"
>keeps referring to Resi evil like that's somehow relevant to this discussion. Like talking about a turd at dinner.
>doesnt actually mention Aliens, suggesting its all made up bullshit from your head canon
>no one said T2was horror, its clearly not, but hey, relevance seems to be irrelevant at this point.
The fact you're not aware of this is quite interesting.
Only AVPs was hard hit BUt waht actually killed it its Prometheus and Covenant.
>widely regarded
Widely regarded by you isn't widely regarded at all, contrarian
>and you see something similar with Terminator 2 fans and Rambo 2 fans.
You actually don't. Nu fans trying to fit in are not what I would call fans
Doesn't James Cameron like Resident Evil? He also Called Alien vs Predator the third best Alien film.
he gave out contractually obligated praise for terminator genysis too upon release. these things don't have to be taken that seriously.
>he gave out contractually obligated praise for terminator genysis too upon release.
He was attached to Genisys. He had no involvement in AvP, and went out of his way to talk about how he liked the first Resident Evil movie.
You mean Dark Fate not Genesys.
honestly, the competition isnt exactly high is it? 3 is awful. the opening 10 minutes destroys everything that Ripley fought so hard for, at which point my goodwill for it was gone. It continues in depressing fashion through drab and miserable scenes edited together by a fricking sadist who thought a coherent story was unnecessary.
I have never left the cinema more disappointed, and that includes Streetfighter the movie and The last action hero.
>everything that Ripley fought so hard for
Ripley's character arc begins before Aliens, you clown
Call me a clown? Where did i say i was only referring to Aliens you smoothbrain? Couldnt you make the straightforward cognitive leap to see i could, and am, be referring to the preceding two films?
Shut the frick up kid, grown men are speaking.
Aliens is fanfiction and Ripley acts OOC throughout it. Newt and Hicks are plot devices, not characters
>Ripley acts OOC throughout it
fricking how lol
>plot devices, not characters
nah you're thinking of Jonesy
They barely any different from Jonesy
Not sure what point you're making, certainly didnt answer my question. I just assume you'll just spout more irrelevant nonsense to bait others.
And it is total nonsense.
Lamo, ok clown
>the CGI is laughable
There is literally no cg in that movie.
there is some during the climax when the alien exposed and in a dogburster shot if you're watching the assembly cut. but you are right, when most people moan about bad CGI what they are actually thinking of is that poorly superimposed rod puppet
>there is some during the climax when the alien exposed and in a dogburster shot if you're watching the assembly cut. but you are right, when most people moan about bad CGI what they are actually thinking of is that poorly superimposed rod puppet
All the bad compositing is being fixed in the forthcoming 4k release
big if true, but I hope there's versions that aren't being lucas'd in any form. Aliens kinda has that green/blue tint on the blu-ray compared to the DVD/VHS. excited for the 4K versions anyway.
There are effects that are so poorly created that they look like bad CGI though
This. Alien 3 is bad because it renders the entire events of Alien and Aliens completely fricking pointless. It's a mean spirited film that FEELS mean spirited, despite the incredible performance by Sigourney Weaver and Charles Dance in carrying the film. And the xenomorph in the film could be replaced by a (admittedly intelligent) rabid pit bull.
>Alien 3 is bad because it renders the entire events of Alien and Aliens completely fricking pointless.
IN what fricking way?
Agreed. It's wild that this has to be explained so many times in extreme detail to so many mouth breathers who just don't get it. Only for them to immediately forget and make another of these dumb threads
False advertising made us hate it. We were promised Aliens on EARTH!
And years of Dark Horse comics had us preparing for it. All that buildup to nothing.
Also the terrible greenscreen effects were bad in 1992 when I first saw it as a child. It only gets worse.
we'll see aliens on earth soon, but I doubt it'll be good
It's almost a certainty to be shit because for some unknown yet incredibly stupid decision they keep setting aliens on Earth as the present day. Like in both AVPs. How is it so hard for them to understand that fans liked the retro future set hundreds of years later and want to ser Aliens there?
Aliens on Earth is a fricking shitty premise tailor made for absolute plebs. Suck a fat wiener.
>Dark Horse
You embarrassing c**t.
studio fricked the production and fincher over big time, but the end result is still decent with some great moments.
which cut did you watch, OP? you might wanna check out the other version of the chestburst scene and Ripley's death.
i simply watched whichever one was on my satellite television's DVR, i recorded it to watch two weeks ago and tonight was the night i was ready to see what happens next
This is a hell of a lot more important for this film. It's not a couple of edited out scenes, there are a lot of differences between the cut that follows the written screenplay and the theatrical release.
Also the novel based on the screenplay is a heck of a good read.
ADF is awesome, too bad he had such a crappy experience dealing with FOX while writing Alien 3 he didn't return to the series until the novelization for fricking Covenant
>novelization for fricking Covenant
has such a nice cover, but I can't find it anywhere. only books about making of the movies
i don't get why you guys put so much credence on special cuts of films. who cares if she washes up on a beach, or if it bursts out of a dog? most of the movie is the exact same and you either liked it or not.
in this case if you care enough about the movie to begin with, it's a bit more complete. without the capturing the alien subplot some death scenes are missing and characters just disappear from the movie - that said, it's the one Alien flick where it's practically impossible to tell that bloated cast apart anyway, so it won't make a lot of difference to a casual viewer. it matters if you are a fan though.
do you really need to see 20 something prisoners get killed individually the same similar ways? you said yourself you can't tell them apart, do you really need them all to get chomped to wonder why they vanished? they're sitting ducks with no weapons, of course half of them are dead if you don't see them, ten of them get blown up when the flare hits the gasoline shit, there's only 20 some guys
the assembly cut only really helps golic tbh
to be fair it was basically invincible in third tbh and it can be explained due to it not being born out of a human and therefore with different characteristics. interesting concept. it didn't need much more than that to kill them
special cuts of alien sequels are always better, aliens' introduces ripley's daughter, resurrection's has her get emotional after seeing a picture of a little girl, etc.
This is just wrong. The special edition of A2 has the legit awesome auto-turret scene, but the original colony scene is just shitty writing. The movie works better without knowing who Newts parents were OR what specifically happens to the colony. Or most importantly, the mega-awesome Paul Reiser character works better until the end when you realize he's a villain. The colony scene ruiins that reveal by showing the company sending them out there. Bad take breh, bad take.
still mad those popped collar jackets didnt become fash
Nah. Aliens is the theatrical version.
>Oh noe, I've lost a daughter I didn't mention before just 20 min before meeting a replacement.
And the rest is detrimental too.
Did you watch the original or the assembly cut? After Aliens it really wasn't the movie people wanted especially with how bleak it is. Personally I'm ok with it and kinda like the assembly cut. Ripley's death brings the story to a conclusion and given me an out with the franchise so I can head canon away everything made afterwards including the prequels.
>Ripley's death brings the story to a conclusion
Aliens already had a conclusion. Ripley makes it back to Earth and has a new daughter, Hicks likely gets discharged due to his wounds and becomes her husband. They can be happy. It's utterly moronic to make up some imaginary reason for eggs to be on board just so it can shit on the previous movie and kill Ripley, since that's apparently the only way for franchises to end. Oh wait, they still couldn't leave it the frick alone.
Depends on which cut you watched. The original theatrical cut is pretty bad, although not completely awful. The Assembly Cut is kino even if it is still quite flawed (the final 3rd in particular still doesn't quite work). Basically most people watched the theatrical back in the day and have written it off ever since and while the Assembly version's good it wasn't released until 2003 and even then it had a shithouse audio mix which didn't get fixed until around 2010 or 2011 (whenever the blu-ray came out) where they got all the surviving cast members back in to redub all the deleted footage. So it didn't really get finished until about a decade ago - meanwhile the theatrical cut had been around for about 20 years by that point.
If the Alien was born from an Ox you watched the Assembly Cut (the good version.) If the Alien was born from a dog you watched the theatrical cut (the bad version.) Simple as that. You know that amazing opening scene where the doctor finds Ripley washed ashore on the beach? That scene is pure fricking kino and almost worth the price of admission. And it was completely cut out of the theatrical version. That's your answer right there.
it came from a dog, and she was discovering in a cryopod?
then you don't even belong here, glad they got that shit out of the way and delivered a solid story
better than anything you could have wanted out of it.
Oh man. So you watched the kinda bad version. Damn. There is still a bit to like in the theatrical cut but frick me you're actually missing out. The Assembly cut's a way better version of the movie. The theatrical cut's still a beautiful looking movie but they cut out almost all the heart and soul from it. Seriously find the Assembly cut man, if you liked the theatrical cut you'll like the Assembly version even more.
Oh and just to continue from here:
Here's the way better opening from the Assembly cut:
It's the best scene in the movie imo and perfectly sets the tone and it somehow got left on the cutting room floor
oh thank god my plex version is the good one
>Isolation drone on the cover of Alien
lmao that's so lazy. I bet that queen is a photo of some bust or statue too
i respect the hustle of you catching that
i pick posters for collections that all share a theme, and those were the best
wipe prometheus and covenant from history
turn isolation into movie instead
assembly cut is defo worth checking out. I don't think there's a world of difference like most people say there is (and some parts actually work better in the theatrical), but you'll be doing yourself a favor if you liked the movie to begin with.
it's better than aliens, but Cinemaphile only wants explosions and "badass" american moments on their films
Cinemaphile has been shitting on aliens for years, especially with that "cameron turned them into stupid space bugs" meme. (it's incorrect, they are by far the smartest ones in Aliens out of the og trilogy)
Can't remember if it was the third one or Resurrection, but the one where they kill a cellmate to get out of their cell was probably the smartest. What are you thinking of?
>but the one where they kill a cellmate to get out of their cell
Pretty sure that was Resurrection
they were super clever in Resurrection (learning how that freeze punishment button works, setting traps like the gun they stick to the hallway to lure people in etc), but those specimen carried more than the usual amount of human DNA because of the cloning process, so I figure it doesn't quite count.
in the third one it's considerably nerfed, it just runs around screaming and killing everyone on sight. no hive building, no human hosts, isn't even trying to be stealthy after the first couple mandatory hide-the-monster kills. much as I like the flick it basically it did what people say Aliens did to the creature.
It was an ox or dog hybrid so not as intelligent as an alien birthed from humans I guess.
>it's incorrect, they are by far the smartest ones in Aliens out of the og trilogy)
kek
>Figure out how to open doors.
>Figure out how to cut power
>Figure out how to find a way into their prey that's not guarded by guns
>Understands threats/stalemate
>Figure what an elevator does.
out how to find a way into their prey that's not guarded by guns
threats/stalemate
kek
what an elevator does
lmao
Well thought out retort.
Hit a tone right, moron. Alone 3 wasn't original, it was trying to be Alien with action packed camera zooms to guys closing doors. Aliens was better, suck my patrician wiener homosexual, pretending a shitty movie is good isn't a personality trait.
Weak bait.
bait game is weak.
Well you just have to watch the quadrilogy if you bother to ever watch Alien so yeah.
It's the least intelligent movie of them all but it's atmospheric and unique and in total the series is worth watching.
i'm gonna watch Resurrection next, dunno when but it was on the DVR with 3, and it's next i think chronologically
Ah frick wait alien 3 is the prison one.
What I wrote in my post is about Resurrections, Alien 3 is not dumb.
Anyway yea watch all of them.
I've tried to watch avp but it's an abomination of a movie.
Damn if you thought AVP was bad... do not watch AVP: Requiem. It's legit one of the worst movies ever made. Like bottom 100 of all time. AVP 1 is at least watchably bad. AVP:R is just another level of bad.
>AVP 1 is at least watchably bad
Yes it's not ugly but it's absolutely moronic.
This is the truth. Cinemaphile is full of capeshitters and nuwars fans so their opinion is worthless.
Alien and Aliens are certified Kino. 10/10 perfect movies.
Alien 3 is shit. I don't care if you like it. People like Resident Evil but i wont call those films masterpieces or even great movies. Alien 3 and beyond are entertaining but they are popcorn flicks nothing more. I prefer 4 cause of Ryder.
Contrary to popular belief AvP 1 and 2 are decent movies. At least entertaining. Prometheus is also ok but then Covenant is absolute shit.
I expect the Disney series to be more shit.
After Aliens they are all remakes of the same thing over and over again.
I like it, I always hear people saying that the Assembly Cut makes the movie decent. The theatrical version as it stands is a decent movie.
true, i liked it and felt compelled to post the thread
It's just alien kills sweaty bald men in a yellow hue. Why do you homosexuals think this is better than even resurrection?
This movie is DRIPPING with atmosphere and great visuals
Visually beautiful. Those sepia tones are fricking fantastic
It basically ended the franchise by writing the whole thing into a corner.
it was way better ending then to just milk it endlessly like fricking terminators. They ended it similarly in T2 but studios just pretend it didnt exist. Even then in T3 ending kinda did a sence with inevitability of end war, honestly best thing the T3 had.
I thought it was very mediocre. I didn't vibe with the british prisoners at all, and the ending was some weird b-movie shit just slapped on there. The entire setting and feel of the movie just wasn't interesting to me, and the special effects regarding the alien creature was a major step backwards even compared to the first movie, it just looked bad.
It was shit compared to the previous two, but still better than the next 2
Standards used to be way higher. Lots of "bad" movies would be making the top 10 list for the year if they were released now.
Casually killing off two major characters off-screen in whom we had emotional investment, smaller in scope, over-familiarity with the alien threat, ugly, dull characters, bad acting and sfx, generally depressing and everything is brown.
it's also not the story they were selling at the start of the marketing campaign, about the dozen or so script treatment, it was meant to be a proper follow-up that took place on earth.
then the studio got cold feet, one of the most infamous development hells in history hit, shoot started without a completed screenplay and was shot down before it was finished, the rest is history.
you were attached to them last movie when they could have been killed at any time, what does it matter if they don't survive cryostasis? if Ripley died too then there wouldn't even be a movie, waaa waaa waaaamp
I hate Newt and Rachel from the War of the Worlds movies tbh
It holds up and plays better now than on release. People expected another A+ film like Aliens. They got such a sharp shift in tone and characters killed off at the start etc that the film got panned. Now audiences are way more forgiving towards a darker tone of sci-fi movie.
>Now audiences are way more forgiving towards a darker tone of sci-fi movie.
Nah, I'm tired of darkshit and I've been for years.
First cuts was rather bad. Later they make a better version. But anyway only idiots hate Aliens 3 and Predator 2, specially comparing to everything else that came out its a fricking masterpieces.
Predator 2 is good.
A3 is shit
And following shit being worse is irrelevant
stay btfoed once again
giving aliens a queen was a hack move, o'bannon's idea of aliens being capable of something of a civilization was better
Hivemind is a civilization type too and its more advanced at that.
For example hivemind is what democracy want to achieve.
still mad cameron didn't let giger make the queen
he was a fantastic artist, frick cameron, fox and lynch
Stay mad, Alien$ is fire
alien>aliens
cameron is a such a onions cuck loser he removed the skull inside the alien head
Same as with T1 and T2 BOTH is great AND different movies. And it just comes to taste what you specifically love more.
Like i love t1 more because of its thriller moments while and i love Alien more because of how claustrophobic and tense it is. But you cant say they better then T2 or Aliens just because of that. Its different movies.
Cameron's design is such a fricking downgrade it's unreal.
Smoothbrain take. Cameron had no choice but to change the design, the alien barely moves in the first film except walking/crawling. They needed a suit that could allow full movement as they were using acrobats for most of the stunts. Aliens is my favourite film and I know it's far from perfect but think of some actual criticism like why have an unmanned ship?
>why have an unmanned ship?
You mean Sulaco skeleton crew? I always thought thats WY cheaping out.
It made no sense other than a plot device. It's shown in alien that muthur is in control of certain parts of the ship, why wouldn't a future ship have an AI on board? Monitoring the situation and maybe even sending a ship down automatically.
>a future ship have an AI on board
What? They had a fricking AIo n the ship wtf? Ai fricking piloted it same as it did in Alien. Remember both waking up scenes.
What the frick do you think that Mother computer was?
On the sulaco? Read things properly before (you)ing me
>It's shown in alien that muthur is in control of certain parts of the ship
>On the sulaco?
Are you moronic?
Are you?
You're really special. I'm saying muthur controls the nostromo but there's no AI shown to control sulaco.
>It's shown in alien that muthur is in control of certain parts of the ship, why wouldn't a future ship have an AI on board?
>why wouldn't a future ship have an AI on board?
>that muthur is in control
>wouldn't a future ship have an AI
>What the frick Mother is then?
>On the sulaco?
>I'm saying muthur controls the nostromo but there's no AI shown to control sulaco.
Where the FRICK you getting sulaco from in this, dumbfrick? I literally asked what the frick MOTHER is if there is no AIs on ships?
So?
>Are you moronic?
Room temperature IQ
>Doesn't even know it's not mother.
>Cameron had no choice but to change the desig
That Black person shouldn't have made the movie in the first place
But he did, and it was great. An top of being the last Alien movie
Seethe more
>It's shit because...
Yes, it's shit.
he didn't need to change the head
NTA but he did, the head being smooth made it incredibly fragile. It still looks like garbage, though.
>why have an unmanned ship?
It's your favourite movie and you still didn't get this simple thing? Have you even seen the movie?
Keep going, I'm dying to see where you're going with this.
Burke sold everyone the idea of the mission being no big deal.
And? Why would that mean no one stays on the sulaco?
If Burke believed Ripley then he knew how dangerous they were, why would he put himself in danger like that? Even having another android on board controlling the ship makes more sense. Another bishop that refuses to rescue the survivors because he knows the risk of an alien getting to earth is too big. Outcome is still the same, as the rest of aliens.
you could never the skull onscreen anyway. always thought the exposed ridges were a good addition
I prefer Alien, but I don't like that you can see the eyes on the left one.
Nobody can justify this. Nothing from this point makes sense, it's all ripleys stasis fever dream.
we need an alien, just stick an egg somewhere...
is this the first ever serving of goyslop?
hey, thats a nice two film franchise you got there
lets greedily make a new film to cash in on the popularity, start filming without a script, remove anything of interest to aliens fans and retread alien in a less interesting way that also fails to make sense in several important areas.
and then kill the main character.
it has some good points, and its amazing the whole project wasnt shitcanned halfway through due to incompetence, but ultimatly its a total waste of potential and the alien universe has never recovered.
they are 6 years apart bruh..
not having a fricking clue where to go next and paying for and rejecting multiple scripts all adds up to wasted time.
it took 10 years for hollywood to make a sequel to a cheap and succesfull movie like zombieland
So? Whre the frick Spending money and time comes into a greed to make fast money?
making a move before the script is finished
building sets before the script is finished:
what does this tell you?
alien 3 only existed because a producer smelled cash
Smelled cash after 6 years of supposed wasted money and effort? You just moronic it seems.
Irl
>making a move before the script is finished
>building sets before the script is finished:
IS like the commonest shit in movie production ever.
jesus read some more trivia shitlord
The religious aspect was great and I'm glad they kept it from the 'wooden planet of monks' drafts
Also it gave us the GOAT first person alien chase cam.
>first person view scenes for a creature without eyes
and yet somehow it's still not the most moronic thing in the movie
>there is this small killer alien loose which can go anywhere using ventilation ducts etc
>lets just go on with out lives and spread out alone in dimly lit rooms
its so tiresome
at that point lol in Alien they thought it was that same small snake they saw in canteen deathg scene. So yeah they spread out to find it.
during which point of the hangar fight did the alien queen deposit an egg?
a drone deposited one
well lets see
when the queen fell down and ripped off her eggsac, she slipped in the goo and landed butt first on a mature egg
then later when she gets the first good smack in the mouth from the powerloader the egg shoots out of her butt, ricochets around the sulaco and gets wedged in a random doorway
surely pilot would notice if a foreign object of few tons is hanging on to dropship exterior
The idea is that Bishop secretly worked on WY( or got mad) same as with Synth before.
Thats why queen got on Sulaco and thats where the egg come in Alien 3
1) Newt and what's-his-face are unceremoniously killed off in the first minute of the movie.
2) It was supposed to take place on earth.
It's not bad in and of itself really but those are two big issues.
It's atmospheric and moody, the set designers and cinematography are fricking great but it's a shit sequel it begins with an asspull and wipes out all the characters instantly.
I like the Assembly cut but there's no denying it's the weak link in the trilogy.
ok but how about the bonus situation?
