Sure the first one was prettier in a lingerie model kind of way, but she didn’t emote much. Maggie would have been fine if she was cast from the start. Saying it's the same character doesn't change the fact that we don't feel a bond between her and Bruce because it's a different person.
The lack of a bond is on Nolan. The character is a huge b***h to everyone but Alfred. She spends most of Begins scolding Bruce or trying to get him killed, then in Dark Knight laughs at her own boyfriend for being shaken up over an attempt on his life. "If you're not getting shot at, you're not doing your job", despite the fact that her boyfriend in Begins actually WAS murdered for doing his job. There's not one scene where she's warm or caring to either of them, except maybe 5 seconds before she dies.

a lot of her stuff being a DA felt like it was originally written for Harvey Dent
but then it seems like they felt they needed a love interest + the love interest needed to be contributing
and there is also the fact they created an original character rather than pick any number of love interests that have been in the Batman comics
