I know about the whole fridge meme but is the Kyle Rayner 90s Green Lantern run good? His suit looks cool as shit and I’m intrigued in him as a character

it has its moments, obviously it's very long so quality is not consistent and according to fans of his love interests (donna, jade) it character assassinates them
it also keeps undoing kyle's character arc of feeling insecure being the last green lantern and then overcoming that and accepting himself, but he suddenly loses all that the instant hal shows up
that said, I'm extremely biased because Hal is my favourite character, and my favourite parts of kyle's run involved hal and parallax
They fricked up Donna so hard in this book.
I liked Donna in Kyle's GL. The Friends level drama got a little tiring but they were an entertaining couple. Donna probably should have stayed as Wonder Girl instead of unpowered/Darkstar/tulpa
Aren't GL books those books that could never keep a creative team?
Read it.
Kyle had no training and no corps, it's cool to see him learn. The gf shit is bad, it makes him an immature butthole. Check out the minis and specials too like The New Corps it comes out of an interesting arc where Kyle travels to the past and brings back Hal Jordan for a while.
Alex dying was imperative to give Kyle lasting consequences for his actions. Dude fricked up and absolutely paid for it. Basically, Alex is his Uncle Ben.
His run could have been so much better had the editors not been morons. He still gets better as the years go by.
Kyle was permanently damaged as a character after the writers decide to kill his woman and shove her in a fridge. All of the relevance and power ups he got after that were writers overcompensating for that blunder
As this anon
pointed out what happened to Alex was his sobering “this isn’t all fun and games” moment. It’s part of his origin story, you may as well say “Batman was ruined the moment the Waynes were shot”. The only reason anyone cares that she was “fridged” was because it was a woman, if Kyle had found his dad in the fridge no one would have given a shit.
Post-Crisis GL fricking sucked until Johns saved the series.
I disagree, there were plenty of good parts in the cheese pizza man's run
It’s not terrible but it’s not particularly interesting either. You got to give him credit for being an editorially mandated poochie who wasnt totally awful but he’s worse than what came before him and what came after. There are a few interesting ideas in there, but you lose everything that was interesting about the Corps in the trade.
>what came after
Jess is debatable but Simon, Jo, and Teen Lantern are all worse than Kyle
Far Sector was good. Also it ignores that the GL books had been a complete shitshow with zero direction or consistency for years leading up to Emerald Twilight.
Far Sector was good, but it's the only thing Jo's been good in. That's the fault of the writers but she's been bad more often than she hasn't
It's pretty decent, Hal Jordan Parallax is actually a fantastic character. Kyle himself can be charming but anytime Hal shows up he steals the show
It has its ups and downs and obvious editorial mandates but for the most part Marz first stint is decent. Winick's run is mediocre with quite a bit of bad mixed in. Raab's is just straight up awful. And Marz coming back at the end of the volume was somehow even worse than Raab.
Marz's last run was editorially mandated as
>Kyle's not the lead anymore. You have 3 issues to justify why he leaves Earth until Rebirth and make sure it's miserable
But yeah, the general advice I'd give for Kyle's run is to stop reading once he gets a haircut
