Aliens was just a wheel-spinning action retread of Alien.
Alien 3 remedied it, bringing it back to Ripley again. Who gives a flying frick about Newt or Hicks or Bishop?

it's when a movie that nobody wants to make somehow gets made...you get Alien 3.

it's only redeeming quality is how strangely well documented it's moronic production actually was and how much of a directionless, passionless shit show it was.

I just assume all alien 3 threads are pure bait because most people aren't moronic enough to actually like such a bad movie, but the first Alien is not at all "about Ripley"
You clearly need to go back and watch Alien again, it's very much so an ensemble affair. Weaver doesn't command much screen time at all for the majority of the movie especially the first half or so and she barely has any lines or does anything of any real importance. She is merely the crew member who survives. it is indeed Aliens that is, by comparison, fixated on Ripley giving her way more characterization.

      Anonymous

bait but it's still moronic. why should you watch a movie, ANY movie, if the results of the movie can just be undone off-screen between installments with the stroke of a pen.
it means there is literally no reason to root for any of the protagonists.

They should have abandoned Ripley and her story with Aliens and then moved onto a Prometheus style different exploration afterwards.

Ripley's continued involvement was less about the narrative at some point and more indicative of how the studios see films as a product. Weaver became a big star and they use the stars to shill the film. The xenos were really the feature attraction but they can't go on press tours or do interviews on late night talk shows, or get nominated for golden globes or whatever. The stars are the face of the marketing machine

I know it's cliche to bring up the comics at this point but they continued the story just fine with Riley not even appearing at all in the first story arc. They acknowledged her existence and influence but they weren't like "literally nothing can happen without her involvement." But the comics didn't cost tens of millions to produce so they could afford to go out on a limb. Studios are chickenshit so we got "just make Alien again with the same actress"

That was basically the point of the film. Fox gambled that general audiences would be into a depressing, existential scifi horror film. Over the years, its bleakness has been compared to films like Salo, Threads, Shame, Elephant, Come and See, etc. Given the mood of the US in the early 90s, the filmmakers wanted to milk misery for cash.

We spend an hour of character development on a new character who gets killed off immediately after we hear his backstory for le epic shock value and Ryan Johnson tier subversion.
The movie drags out after the halfway point and we need a character to act completely illogically for the movie to go on for another hour.
Less people would've died if the Alien had won in the first movie instead of Ripley.

      >opening sequence that makes no sense and relies on the presence of an egg that appears literally out of nowhere
      >a horde of interchangeable new characters you don't care about
      >bad special effects, a first for the series
      >story that doesn't bring anything new to the series
      >over-reliance on blood and gore
      >a general lack of tension
      >dismal atmosphere, pointless nihilism and cruelty
It's the result of pretentious edgelords and a studio that didn't care.

Alien 3 is bad because there are plot holes. Like at some point they say they have no weapons on the planet, but then they find barrels worth of some explosive chemical, and instead of making bombs and flamethrowers , they just sprinkle it in ventilation and give every moron a sparkle device. There is also a room that can be used for trapping alien, but it can also serve as shelter, they could have barickaded themselves there, but they didn't. They also can make spears, nets, armor, swords, since they have a fricking forge. But they don't do shit.

      > they find barrels worth of some explosive chemical, and instead of making bombs and flamethrowers , they just sprinkle it in ventilation and give every moron a sparkle device

Nah gay frick you. I marathoned the entire series in like 3 or 4 days
I loved Alien, I enjoyed Aliens but felt it lost the tone of the original. It became a cameron movie (I love cameron but not the same thing) and the alien lost its mystique and just became a giant reptile bug that you could just shoot bullets at. A very competent movie but far, far less interesting

I thought Alien 3 was a return to form in some ways and I really liked the setting. It jumped ahead several decades and added another layer of surrealism

Resurrection was.. okay.. fun, but it felt like shlock.
Prometheus is good but feels dumb. Covenant, same thing. Actually depressing in a way, it felt like a regression. I don't think Romulus will be any good at all

I thought of all the sequels 3 had the most character and uniqueness. And this is my unironic opinion, chudlord.

Maybe it's because I saw a post release edition (I'm honestly not sure which one I saw) but I liked it a lot.

3 is just bad. I don't even really care about killing off Hicks and Newt (although it's ridiculous to think Ripley would miss some alien eggs aboard their craft) the worst offense are the dismal special effects, especially coming after the amazing effects from the first two films. The prison planet was an interesting idea (however impractical it would be in reality) but that unfortunately relegates most of the characters as indistinguishable from one another. They almost all look at talk the same (obviously with a handful of exceptions). It's hard to get attached to them, unlike the charismatic characters from the first two films. Rez, while silly French nonsense most of the time, is more fun and engaging, and the effects are top notch

In Aliens, the point is to DEFEAT the alien. Which means effective weaknesses must be established. And that's just not as interesting.

I don't want to see a military unit figure out how to kill this thing, especially not if the solution is just "uhh idk shoot it in the head worked fine on Kennedy"

Well the genres changed. Alien was basically a space slasher done exceptionally well. Aliens is scifi action done exceptionally well. Only problem with aliens is, you can replace xenomorphs with anything you want, it won't really change anything in the movie. Kinda Rambo 2 to Alien's Rambo

Its been said a million times, the studio didnt give a shit, some exec literally said who cares, it could just be a black screen for an hour and people will still pay to see it. Troubled production, different scripts, tons of rewrites. That bit in Covenant that you get infected with the Alien by spores and albino Aliens was from one of the scripts for Alien 3 (written by William Gibson author of Neuromancer).

  32. 2 weeks ago

I thought Covenant was flawed kino at least.

David was a great character, I loved the interactions with Walter. Some of the designs of the engineer world took new Giger inspiration, had an otherworldly tone not seen since the original.

Alien had the same ending. Ripley made it out with her Jonesy. None of these movies REQUIRED some ultra depressing ending where everyone dies. The three of them making it to Earth fine is just as much an ending as the three of them dying horrifically for no reason on some random prison world.

The original version would have been good. A satellite inhabited by monks and Ripley lands there bringing a demon into their society. Would have been at least competent and worthy of discussion. the first script for alien three had an alien egg growing out of the organic components of bishops guts.
its an asspull but its an attempt to come up with a reason for there being an alien so the story can continue in alien 3.
after 3 years of re-writes i guess everyone forgot that they needed a reason at all.

Ridley wanted to portray the future as more sexually open. That crews would be nude around each other and not a big deal like in starship troopers. And that they'd be out in space together that sex wouldn't be too big a deal either and there's a deleted scene of Ripley banging Dallas
