Fandoms can make content that I sometimes enjoy but I have no desire to actively participate in one.

No, fandoms are trash, an unfortunate byproduct of art that slowly kills creativity and demands excess. The world would legitimately be a better place without fans.
Fans btw are not an audience, audiences are fine and dandy.

people consuming and then becoming obsessed enough to drop money on a franchise it typically what corporate entities want though.

A fandom is that, even when they complain, they will continue to buy it anyway, continue to talk about it, because they need it, the creation defines them.
The audience is more picky, they are more likely to try new things but also quick to drop or dismiss what they don't like.

That’s a neurotic way of looking at it. Fans make a specific work their hobby, audiences are just there to see and enjoy

So what’s the threshold of audience to fan then?
If someone talks about the show with others, is that a fan base?

        An audience experiences a creation
        A fandom obsesses over it

A guy who criticizes a thing because he thinks it could be better vs a guy who criticizes a thing because he wants it to pander to him more.

Hell no, fandoms are toxic as frick.

Enjoy the content, sure, but avoid the fandom unless you somehow find a niche one that isn't full of gatekeeping buttholes who actually hate that which they profess to love.

Last I went about in fandom places the only thing they seemed to produce(aside from art) was shipping and shipping related things, which I really dont care about.
    So no.

    >pop culture fandoms
    >not more toxic than a Russian Army Battalion Tactical Group after camping in a Ukrainian forest full of red trees

Look, even before Wokeshit became a thing, you had fandoms with vitriolic infighting amongst themselves like Star Wars fans fighting over whether they preferred the Originals or the Prequels.
