Well never know. He could've wound up at least competent after adjusting. The lives of his men should've obviously outweighed an opportunity for him to personally prove otherwise, but I've always disliked the intense insistence from viewers that he was hopeless. He's a tragic man with serious issues, but the truth is its much more tragic that he never even got the chance to truly prove himself. His own son made comments at a reunion many years later and said he was a good dad that worked very very hard and was always determined to get everything done for the Army. I have always seen him as a man that simply lost his one chance to truly prove himself.

you cant let someone prove themselves with the lives of others, if he doesnt suddenly show an entirely new side to himself, the entire company dies

Officers always prove themselves with the lives of others. I agree with you, but even Winters and other officers irl probably get men killed multiple times adjusting to real combat. Sobel shouldn't have been given the opportunity to prove himself, but that's what's so sad about it. The guy was intensely unlikable but maybe I just always felt bad for him.

He DID prove himself, just incapable. If you cant do it in exercise you double cant do it when people are shooting at you.

Giving such a man a "chance" as you put it would put their entire company at risk of annihilation. These were isolated paratroopers. Mistake of placement behind enemy lines doesnt mean dig in and wait for back up it means youre all going to die. He did prove himself for better or worse. Hes not going to be suddenly better when its real bullets flying.
        Measure is unceasing.

You people have no clue what you are talking about. He did see combat and he did succeed in it.
          See:

The idea that Sobel was not a proper combat soldier is a dumb meme and I hate this show for propagating it. He fought at D-Day, parachuting into Normandy just like the soldiers depicted in the show.
          >Immediately after landing, Sobel assembled four men and destroyed a German machine gun nest with grenades before joining the rest of the division near Carentan.
Have you ever parachuted into Normandy and fricked up Germans with grenades, anons?

See that's interesting, I actually didn't know that. I know the book(and series) were based on the personal recollections of the troops, so maybe they just didn't like him and some of it was just them disparaging him. Kind of reminds me of Casey Kasem in Generation Kill and how after the show aired they asked around and a bunch of marines wound up saying he was a stand up guy and the depiction of him wasn't completely accurate.

There's a slight misconception that military officers earn their rank through applicable experience. But in the 1930s the last war for America was done nearly 2 decades prior, so Sobel would've been just as inexperienced as the men he was training. Some men pick it up immediately, some take longer. I don't think Sobel had ever seen combat.

COs are only COs because they have a degree in whatever field, which then allows them to go to a military university before actual enlistment.

There hasnt been much significant made about the naval battles in the Pacific. You could make a pretty good series about those. The Battle of Leyte Gulf could be a whole series by itself. Even a serious movie about Taffy 3 would be pretty epic.

    You are talking semantics.
I am trying to explain reality of the situation (of war)
A commission as you call it, is a superficial certificate given to a person who goes through military training before hand (training in the art of war one would assume)
Enlistment is done by both but in the 3rd world country of USA, because they are grammatical morons, they call and "enlisted man" a different thing. As if an "enlisted" man is separate from another person...who also enlisted (CO)
    Enlist:
    >To engage (persons or a person) for service in the armed forces. To engage the support or cooperation of. To enter the armed forces.

In actual reality, of war, neither has any experience and both are on equal footing.
The real difference being, as you stated. One is able to execute orders over another.
Both bleed and breath the same and both have no experience in war on how to keep the latter happening and former from not happening.
