I credit Nintendo's serendipitous recruitment of Yoichi Kotabe (already an old pro in the animation industry when they got him) with the characters and look becoming iconic and timeless.
The "canon" was cemented surprisingly early; Kotabe's work even around 1988 for SMB3 is already 100% consistent with the work done by in-studio anonymous designers/illustrators for recent mario games that still use 2D illustrations.
Anyway this thread seems to be 100% unrelated to comics or cartoons but whatever, this stuff is so good it DESERVES not to be considered Cinemaphile or Cinemaphile
The days when Donkey Kong didn't have his now-standard Rare redesign and DK Jr. actually existed were so much simpler. Now Nintendo can't make up their minds about how the Kong family tree works.
He's just a bit too squeaky clean nowadays. Back before New Super Mario Bros Wii, mario was in all sorts of experimental games and such, and it all started to wear away across a decade, especially with alphadream gone. Now all you see is the same established games.
Mario Kart. New Super Mario Bros. Super mario 64 7. Mario party. Sports game.
Still great games, but the franchise just feels super centralized now. Nothing is allowed to be it's own thing anymore and it's cause it to feel a bit stagnant.
Also I feel this is more of a Cinemaphile thread than anything, but I guess mario is kind of Cinemaphile related.
>Only specifically the American movie.
and the previous DIC-produced adaptations (Super Show, Adventures of 3, World etc.)
Hell it's even in his 'DNA'. He was only made because they couldn't the rights to make a Popeye game att (they where able to make one a bit later on but that's beside the point).
>Hell it's even in his 'DNA'.
That's a pretty shitty argument considering how much Cinemaphile stuff was made because a guy really loved some anime or vidya even in the 90s and early 2000s.
Yeah, that's my point and these cartoons are not discussed on Cinemaphile or Cinemaphile so Mario illustrations made for the old games by a japanese artist have no place on Cinemaphile.
And also Ruby-Spears' Saturday Spercade, which had segments based off OG Donkey Kong with Mario, Pauline, and DK. Was old enough to remember this back in the day.
Is Mario checking Peach's butt?
Aren't you?
No
Still Kino tho
Checking her sick gaming skills
Same. Old Nintendo powers when they're wasn't a Mario cannon fully established yet has some fun and cute pictures (non degen)

When did Mario stop being relatable and fun? I feel like Mario the character is no one’s favorite anymore

PEACH NO YOU CAN'T CALL BLACK PEOPLE THAT
Mario's a half-Cinemaphile franchise, especially nowadays.
Only specifically the American movie.

Those guys just operated on a similar principle.

Bowser's best design is honestly his King Koopa design and it's not even close.
