They clearly want to build up to something that includes Tom Holland Spidey, and make it a big event type thing, but I get the sense that Holland and/or Disney might go "Nah, frick you, your universe sucks, we want no part of it", causing Sony to give up on the whole thing.
Especially if Madame Web and Kraven the Hunter both flop horribly; they would probably retroactively settle for
        >please remember the Venom trilogy with some fondness and ignore the rest, we weren't trying to make a whole universe out of it, no idea what you're talking about

They get to noncommitally ride off the MCU whenever it does or doesn't suit them. If they do well they synergize with Marvel but if it sucks and flops then the MCU takes the brand damage and not Columbia. They also don't have a streaming platform they dumped billions of dollars into a black hole for. It's a sweet setup they've got going.

I think their long-term goal was to unfrick their brutal Spider-Man deal by having something do dangle in front of Disney as a bargaining chip. They'd establish a universe of Spider-Man characters and then negotiate a deal to bring Spider-Man himself into it, kind of the reverse of what happened with Spider-Man going to the MCU.

Which of course was a fatally flawed plan because aside from Venom nothing they have can stand on its own as a solo property. They're putting the cart before the horse because no one making the high-level decisions knows enough about any of these properties to even be aware which one's the cart and which one's the horse. To them it's all just comic characters and if Venom can Make almost billion why not Kraven, too? They're both Spider-Man villains, right?

        Anonymous

You're way off the mark. They're just using the IPs so they keep the license. The films almost always released around February which means they're low effort shit and they know it.

Madame Web is a suspense thriller that depicts the titular character's origin story in a standalone universe with an approach that was more grounded and gritty compared to many previously released superhero films. Cassandra "Cassie" Webb is forced to confront her past while trying to survive with three young women with powerful futures who are being hunted by a deadly adversary.

Yeah, and in the comics she's also blind and sits in a wheelchair. She's not really main character material so the only way they can make a movie of her is doing some wacky adaptation that hardly resembles the source material.

Makes sense that they aren't using the costumes, superhero movies have been bombing left and right lately so they're trying to take it in a different direction with a "realistic" take. From the sounds of it, that is not turning out well for them, so I don't think it's JUST the costumes that's making superhero movies fail. But I can at least see the logic they used.
