I've seen and no, it does not come close. It's great, with an all european cast and daring in it's execution but it just doesn't do. The crafting of the supernatural elements within the story was something they couldn't hack at all. The acting was stilted and didn't relay palpable emotion, the casting choices were uninspired and dull though I excuse this for the reason stated prior. Anya after bog just ruined it. I think someone like Sarah Gadon would have been better served and maybe someone like Anson Mount as the lead. Look at this guy. Pure viking.

Would it have had Christian shit in it? Mel could have made that angle work, but he also didn't need any missionary/conquistador stuff to make Apocalypto great (disregarding the brief scene with Spaniards).

            Anonymous

Absolutely not. He's been studying Norse history and culture since he was a teenager and Berserker was his first passion project back when he was 16, he wanted to do the movie in old norse only and show incredible violence unlike anything seen in movies and that he'd make the berserkers scarier than anything else in cinema but also give respect to the entire Viking people and their canon and not bring his personal views in it as is evident with Apocalypto, like you said. DiCaprio as the lead was a strange choice but never doubt Mel.

If he striked Mel as the lead, then I can't fault his judgement. Who knows? Maybe Leo couldn't pass up the opportunity to jack off his own ego and would have learned old Norse for the role. Back then he wasn't SO massive so Mel could have convinced him to do it.

Why was this warrior such a sperg?

Doesn't he base his entire arguments on the injuns being Aztec, but they're actually Mayan?

The movie actually conflates both cultures, saying they are Mayan but it was the Aztec hundreds of years later who came into contact with the Spaniards. By the time of the Aztec the Mayan were washed up.
The film does a great job with cultural depiction, the Spaniards and timing are innaccurate though. Its not the worst innaccuracy given how it doesn't play into the plot nearly at all.

        Anonymous

There were still a Mayan people at the time, just fallen on hard times compared to when they were at their peak. The villains in the movie have a city-state but they're clearly not doing well, since the whole mass sacrifice thing was to avert their decline. If the film showed Tenochtitlan, it would have completely blown the frick out of the unnamed Mayan city. Is it anachronistic that the Mayans even had cities at the time? I unfortunately don't know enough about the time period.

          Anonymous

Thats all fair to point out. Mayan Classic period ended sometime in to 900s with total societal collapse. Smaller cities stayed afloat but the Aztec expanded their influence until Spanish contact.
I forget the youtuber's exact reasoning for criticism, but the film does take place during Postclassic. The issue of conflating cultures and period accurate art is hardly something to hold against the film.
Checking some articles other 'experts' also say human sacrifice was practiced more by Aztecs, so Mayans doing it is somehow a problem? (its not).
I also checked a film summary. The Spanish at the end are Alvarado and his men, not Cortes. It was a real contact that happened with the Mayan before Cortes met the Aztec. I think the problem in film is that its not the correct year.

          So to summurize:
Some of the cultural pieces might not be period accurate
The lnaguage might not be period/dialect perfect
The Spanish at the end might have not been accurate to the year
The Mayan by this time were probably not sacrificing as many people as we see in the mass graves

        Anonymous

Mayans were still around when the Spanish arrived at the new world, although dwindling. Chichen Itza and Mayapan, that the Mayans were named after, were in operation to name a couple, and they did combat the Spaniards in battle. Ethnic Mayans are still in Yucatan today. This criticism is from people who don't even know mesoamerican history

It's strange how most authors have some gay fetish for Saladin and make Richard lionheart into some cartoonish villain. Sure the crusaders made some mistakes but they were mostly in the right trying to fight off a foreign invader.

        Anonymous

They were completely in the right and the Crusades were a massive and incredibly impressive undertaking and union of people unlike anything else in history through their shared faith. It's everything that encapsulates the power of the faith and what it can imbue people with hence the massive israelite revisionism made to tear it to shreds given the power it contains.

Muslims are le good minority used for propagating evil ideologies even though they're completely against everything the woke israelite paradigm preaches to an absurdly violent degree. Shows just how senseless and fricking craz the world is now. As much as I dislike the blasphemous trash heap that is KoH, Norton's performance as Baldwin was straight out of a Gibson movie. Tremendously based.

Richard was a minor character of the Crusade and is only remembered because of English propaganda, that strangely omits he got the cross of st George from the French out of pity as he was throwing a tantrum.

Why does everyone forget that the muzzies were juat as bad as the christians in the movie? Only Saladin and that one cavalier were good natured. The rest of them were war hungry, blood thirsty, committed atrocities, and were xenophobic. All of this is shown in the film. There's just more screentime dedicated to the christians, so you see more of their shit. But the good christians outnumber the good muslims like 15 to 1 in the movie.
