It was envisioned for an adult audience but was eventually reworked for a children's cartoon. Some people say they'd like an adult reboot but I can only imagine it worked as well as it did because of the restraints they were forced to abide by.
This joke was pretty insane to make in a children's show though:
The thing did that I liked was having Dan and Elise actually get along when it turned out they happened to have a common goal/enemy. What annoyed me though was when they backtracked on that later on by having Dan still be uncooperative and ruin the possibility of having an episode every now and then where Dan and Elise got along, but only under very specific circumstances. Wish they had kept that possibility in.
Also bothered that there was never another season. I think they intended to make another one, didn't they?
Is that what people on the internet are obsessed with nowadays? Is that why I see so many stupid posts like, "What demographic is this intended for?"
>What annoyed me though was when they backtracked on that later on by having Dan still be uncooperative and ruin the possibility of having an episode every now and then where Dan and Elise got along
Ins't that the point of the character? He's unbearable to anyone but Chris.
>Is that what people on the internet are obsessed with nowadays?
i mean, it's always been a thing, but only among clueless executives
but new young people go along with every authority and their idea of things, even if they think that thing is bad. they never deny, only repeat.
would teens in the early 10s really relate to a misanthrope dealing with real life troubles? feels like an odd choice. not that i believe in demographic focus or anything
I don't think Dan or Chris had any kid-centered titles under their belt before this
they also were probably picked partially due to their name which is topkek
dan and chris are the creators? so they named the characters after themselves? I love that. What do you mean they were picked though, who was picked, by whom, and why
I don't think it was intended to be particularly relatable, at least to kids, just funny
I bet "And parents will tolerate it way more than most of the other kiddy shit" was a decent selling point in their pitch though
okay so back in 2010
boy howdy, that is the least angry rant I think I've ever heard. it's not even worthy of the letter a. or any vowel. that's just a rnt.
The guy derail 4 fricking minutes of his video to be butthurt at a few kids in the comments section nicely asking for a power rangers video.
He was lucky that was a decade ago because nowadays the reaction wouldn't be funny memes, it would be several youtubers making one hour long videos about how toxic and abusive he is. Not even people like Lily Orchard dare to attack it's own fans those days.
I'd say nice, but after it took ages for the Swat Kats revival, I'd say we'd be waiting a LONG time for it. We'll be lucky if all the OG cast and crew aren't dead by then
as long as they don't ruin it with modern garbage. i have to think it'd be pretty hard to have a show about an angry guy ranting at things in society these days. Plus him dating a teenage burger flipper, they were already starting to shitfit about that at the time.
I think he would confuse israelites with druids and end up spouting a lot of casual disdain about how their stone monuments are stupid, but he wouldn't be angry
Meta cold open where his show isn't renewed for another season. He is left dumbfounded as to how this could possibly be. He reads a questionable article about israelites controlling the media. Dan falls to his knees and shakes his fist at the sky screaming "JEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEWWWS!!!"
Almost certainly. That or they'd pull a subversive swing where he does like them, blames the episodes' issues on something else and Elise ends up fighting mosad in the background.
Yes but for all the wrong reasons like he hates one really specific homecooked dish he had at a bat mitzvah or he thinks 8 days of hanukkah is too many or something.
It's such an interesting mix of moods, this show. one minute it's grittily realistic, and all the consequences of slovenly living are hitting Dan hard, the next minute crazy supernatural shit is going on
er right. Sorry got wires crossed, canadians are all half-bear, i was mixing it up with that
>as long as they don't ruin it with modern garbage.
they will anon,
it is inevitable,
i know. but i've given them my terms, and they will either take them or reject them
and whichever one they choose, they will fail, because failure is guaranteed now.
It was more in the vein of random callbacks to earlier episodes, and some minor worldbuilding. I think there were a couple recurring minor antagonists / side characters as well that played into that. Though for Dan just about anyone or anything could be labeled an "antagonist".
Is there a reason Dan Vs. ended up on a children's network, let alone ran for 50 episodes? Maybe in a better life, it could've aired in a prime time slot and made a strong case that adult animated comedies DON'T need to look like generic slop.

honestly it probably would have just been another bad family guy ripoff
The restrictions from it having to run alongside MLP were a big part of why it was so likeable

Sort of a Regular Show situation?

i mean it has a decently unique look but it wasn't that unusual looking back then. felt like a 2006-ish show.
this preliminary style is exactly the kind of shit that people would shit on today for being generic, and rightly so.

I really hate those character designs. Glad they got workshopped.

it's weird, dan vs does a lot of stuff that pissed me off at the time, posedoll puppeting, weird nose placement, but after standards dropped, now it feels great. and the backgrounds are incredible.
eh the universe crashing in on itself as Dan admits fault is probably the best ending there is that doesn't slight the character Dan being shown as human as anyone else with the boy scout/camping one is a good finale too
I think a lot of these "limitations" that people keep crooning about are moronic
Dan Vs has one thing Family Guy and American Dad doesn't and that's a set goal per episode that sets up connected jokes
Someone pisses Dan off, and he goes on a revenge quest. This show could have saved us from all the family guy rip offs by testing the waters for a different type of adult animation.
The show never got to reach its full potential, and was basically neutered. Its a miracle its as good as it is.
i mean you've got dave foley, known mostly for a comedy troupe and an offbeat sitcom, you've got that blonde chick from MADtv who was never in anything else, nicole sullivan i think, you've got Dan's voice who is just that weird voiced guy that shows up in things.. there's a lot of john dimaggio because every show at the time had lots of john dimaggio, nothing weird there, but..
I don't think Dan or Chris had any kid-centered titles under their belt before this
they also were probably picked partially due to their name which is topkek
then you should hate his twin brother Nad
Pink party woman loves him more
Well i love her more
>when you land Dan and Weird Al
Bro. What a play. Ponka owns this shit.
I recently started rewatching this. i THINK it's my second viewing ever. Really holds up. I still have no idea what audience it was going for.
>we couldn't get greenlit for adult swim, but frick it, we ball
It was envisioned for an adult audience but was eventually reworked for a children's cartoon. Some people say they'd like an adult reboot but I can only imagine it worked as well as it did because of the restraints they were forced to abide by.
This joke was pretty insane to make in a children's show though:
?si=YS27tKwPsaighsoi
i think because it was a knock on the medical system
nah, it references porn
It's not a butthole fingering joke?
Calling this a kids shows doesn't feel right. It's appropriate for them but....made for them specifically? I haven't seen this in a long time so idk.
it just feels like 'a show' from back when shows were just shows and nobody cared much about demographics.
The thing did that I liked was having Dan and Elise actually get along when it turned out they happened to have a common goal/enemy. There was also the joke where Dan gets raped by a bear.
it was just the style at the time
teens, I guess?
would teens in the early 10s really relate to a misanthrope dealing with real life troubles? feels like an odd choice. not that i believe in demographic focus or anything
dan and chris are the creators? so they named the characters after themselves? I love that. What do you mean they were picked though, who was picked, by whom, and why

I think they just made 'a show'
and shopped it around til someone would produce it
and when they were told the hub, they just went uh okay.
Same
Dan is sympathetic as shit
he's like a guy who somehow got all the right attitudes and alignments, but zero upbringing and thus no morals.
He's probably dead in his universe, just like his show.
Dan would just call up Chris and have him come prank the devil until he let him go
I hope he is.
It makes sense since the butthole youtuber who is angry at everything trend died out after The Great Linkara Famous Power Rangers Rant
when was this? I quit watching history of power rangers after he started bashing them for not forcing gay on children sooner
okay so back in 2010

if you say so, friend.
BUILD THAT WALL!!!
Revival Kickstarter soon according to the official Facebook page, btw.
nice! i'd put in a cash
just to give dave foley more money (or rather, to give his ex wife more money I guess)
Does Dan own his show? I would have thought Discovery or whoever would.
i could easily see hasbro passing on ownership of it, and it was gone by the time Discovery bought it
From my quick research and memory of the digital releases, it was owned by Starz but now it’s owned by a group called Waterman Entertainment.
bizarre on all counts
I'd say nice, but after it took ages for the Swat Kats revival, I'd say we'd be waiting a LONG time for it. We'll be lucky if all the OG cast and crew aren't dead by then
Well, better late than never I suppose.
plus barry has mostly retired from voiceover, he only comes back when the ninja turtles guys ask him to
I'll have to throw some scratch at that
as long as they don't ruin it with modern garbage. i have to think it'd be pretty hard to have a show about an angry guy ranting at things in society these days. Plus him dating a teenage burger flipper, they were already starting to shitfit about that at the time.

Mr. Mumbles is really cute
Do you think he would be antisemetic
I think he would confuse israelites with druids and end up spouting a lot of casual disdain about how their stone monuments are stupid, but he wouldn't be angry

>supernatural
Really?
I think Chris turning into a yeti because he's 1/16th Canadian qualifies.
>because he's 1/16th Canadian qualifies.
i thoughts it was case his grandad was a fury
er right. Sorry got wires crossed, canadians are all half-bear, i was mixing it up with that
i know. but i've given them my terms, and they will either take them or reject them

post mr mumbles
she's a cute lil thing
awww
It's a crime this show ended without a proper finale
I haven't seen the show yet. Isn't each episode standalone anyway?
Yes, but there's still some continuity
Worldbuilding or callbacks here and there are not the same as gradual buildup to something that needs payoff. Was it actually the latter?
It was more in the vein of random callbacks to earlier episodes, and some minor worldbuilding. I think there were a couple recurring minor antagonists / side characters as well that played into that. Though for Dan just about anyone or anything could be labeled an "antagonist".

my ex gifted me a JERK t-shirt, I hope she gets raped someday.
what's wrong with you anon.. you had a cool girl who is a fan of Dan Vs.
My wife loves wearing my JERK shirt since I outgrew it.
>dan Vs.
Post them. You know what.
I think a lot of these "limitations" that people keep crooning about are moronic

What a random fricking voice cast too
Random how?
i mean you've got dave foley, known mostly for a comedy troupe and an offbeat sitcom, you've got that blonde chick from MADtv who was never in anything else, nicole sullivan i think, you've got Dan's voice who is just that weird voiced guy that shows up in things.. there's a lot of john dimaggio because every show at the time had lots of john dimaggio, nothing weird there, but..
Curtis Armstrong's voice is perfect for angry cartoon characters, he's almost Horvitz tier. It's a shame he barely voiceacts at all.
I don't think Dan or Chris had any kid-centered titles under their belt before this
they also were probably picked partially due to their name which is topkek
Whatever you are selling, I'm not buying it
I miss seeing his banner, why are mods so unfun?
I forgot, what was his banner?
I don't remember..
The Boss was super cute and had great chemistry him.
Should've stuck around.
wait which boss again
The demon chick.
post pics pls
Elise is stacked
what's your favorite joke from the show?
