I think it's mostly because isolation fricks up people HARD and that's easy to emphasize with. It's been known that humans would go mad within mere days of no social interaction. Now imagine being an stuck in space for 1000 years of that madness, just because the person you trusted the most stood you up and offed herself without letting you free.
It's a potent combo of genuine heartbreaking betrayal and existential horror.
