I never saw this till now cause it seemed like melodramatic Oscar bait. But it's one of the best movies I've seen. Is it the best thing Eastwood's made?

Singlehandedly made me hate Laura Linney... as a person. Maybe the acting was too good.

Dave's family gets fricked and did they really do anything wrong? Brutal "frick the weak" moral hits you in the dick right at the end LOL.

        >cause it seemed like melodramatic Oscar bait
Isn't that what it was?? All those officers piling on Sean Penn's character and he doesn't go down? Then he shouts
        >IS THAT MY DAUGHTER
while the camera pans to the sky with dramatic music flourishing? Cmon dude.

        >Brutal "frick the weak" moral
That's by far the strangest part. I'm not saying it needed a nice ending, it was based on a novel after all and I'm sure Eastwood was relatively faithful, but wow that was neat to see. I will say the stumble over the finish line with Kevin Bacon and Sean Penn jerking themselves off with the
        >Sometimes I feel like we all got in that car that day
No, no you didn't. Dave Got in the car, he's the one who got raped and whatever else.

Yeah that's more than fair since it was what I based my decision not to see it on for the last 20 years.

The real finish line was actually the looks they exchange each other at the parade the next day, kind of "I know you're gonna keep being you, so I'm gonna keep being me."
I thought it was a nice touch.

I think it's his best, yeah.

I would have absolutely watched a sequel about Kevin Bacon and Laurence Fishburbe chasing after Sean Penn in full gangster mode

            >hey it turns out that I didn't kill your daughter I killed this other guy who was never mentioned before now and by grand cosmic coincidence it just so happened to be the *exact* same night your daughter was killed
The twist is moronic and ruins the movie, which is a shame because it's otherwise very good

I liked that. I also like how the real story about the kids doesn't really seem to add up either. I hardly remember the "official" narrative tbqh

The public had sort of already decided, Dave is a creep.

In some ways the movie is about how we as a society turn our backs on the mentally unwell because they are unsavory

The movie is also about power. The rapists use the power of law enforcement and religion as covers is they can dupe kids. The kids who killed Jimmy's daughter (more than likely) did it so they could have control over the older brothers life.. I do think the mute kid killed her so Ray Jr wouldn't leave.
Then there's so called lady Macbeth.. She was intensely aroused by Jimmy's actions but I think also emboldened by the fact the last vestige of his prior relationship was out of the picture. On a primal level she relished his daughters death;the family was now completely hers.

hm i remember that ending in the book. It was a bit shocking. "he deserved it because hes weak and we are the strong and a lion doesnt care if it kills a lamb or not"

Lehane is middlebrow of course but this story is more fascinating than anything King has written. As a film I think it's easily better than Shawshank.

The only other film that I've seen go to shit harder in its last two minutes is Incendies. Seriously, what was Eastwood thinking with the lady Macbeth shit with the wife?

She has much less control over her husband than Lady Macbeth. Jimmy isn't reluctant at all.
I think she was a part of his character development, because we gradually get the impression during the investigation into "Just Ray's" pistol that Jimmy's criminal past is a lot more serious than he let on. Then we see he's not just a tough guy with a history, he's literally running a little crew and has gotten away with at least one murder scot free. His wife backing him is the final revelation in that character development from a grieving father in the audience's eyes to a sinister criminal presence.
The greater point being how the crime they witnessed changed all their lives. Davey was the victim so he took the brunt of the trauma, while Jimmy and Sean took diametrical paths to protect themselves from trauma by becoming a detective and a serious criminal respectively.

I'm talking about the direction given to the actress in her final scene with Penn. It's hammy as frick and comes out of nowhere.

          Anonymous

That's what I'm trying to get at. It's not really about her, it had to come out of left field because she has no character arc, she is subordinate to Jimmy's character arc. Her attitude towards his criminal activity would change the progression of the story if it was explored earlier.
Probably could've been handled better? I dunno. The way she threw Celeste in the garbage made me uncomfortable. As a matter of fact right before that shot with Penn standing in their bedroom showing the crucifix tattoo on his back, I was imagining how his character was going to confess what happened to his wife. And then he came out with it just like that, both of them stone cold. That had to deliberate on Eastwood's part.

I didn't like it. Clint's best directorial efforts are still his westerns.

The main problem of this movie is that I can't buy Tim Robbins' character being married at all. Even at the start of the movie he's excessively spergy and autistic, am I really supposed to believe that he somehow has a wife and a kid in that state? And then after he kills the pedo the wife is immediately scared and suspicious of him. What the frick was that marriage? Did she even know he was raped as a kid? And if not how did she explain his husband being a borderline catatonic weirdo? And why did she put up with that for a decade?

Also I hate how inconsistent his character is. He makes a million stupid mistakes making himself excessively suspicious with his wife, Penn and others, but in the interrogation scene he's cold as ice and plays the policemen like a fiddle, running circles around them and taunting them. Frick off.

She had his back at first, immediately washed his bloody clothes. When the pressure was mounting and police were actually questioning them he just didn't do enough to exculpate himself. Sean Penn was right, why wouldn't you admit to killing a pedophile? She probably would have kept lying for him but they found the body in the end so he was probably doomed anyway.
